To all...

About this time every year, it becomes necessary to review our Mission and
to re-focus our members' participation for the good of the lists.

We are about Navy Parenting and only Navy Parenting. Our lists now reach
over 2,200 Navy Families including over 600 Plebe Families in the Class of
2005. Some of us have been around since dirt was new and there were only 70
members on just one list. Others have joined within the past hours.

I want to remind all of you that we are not a small, intimate group of moms
sitting around the kitchen table. In total, we are about as many
individuals as were inside Alumni Hall for the I-Day Briefing with Admiral
Ryan and Captain Ellis, maybe more.

We've grown to become a huge group of concerned parents. A group who is
friendly, helpful and sincerely interested in the well being of our Mids and
the other parents who are members of this organization. But we have to
remember that each time we hit the "Send" button on our email programs we
are sending out anywhere from 1,200 (on Sports) to 2,200 (on Family) emails
to as many individual inboxes. Aren't computers wonderful? They bring
everyone into everyone else's backyard.

Here's the catch. Lately (and it happens every year) we have forgotten just
how many email messages are sent every time we send a message to one of our
lists. It's so easy to just jot out a quick note and send it off into
cyberspace. The problem is that if every member sent just TWO extra little
messages per YEAR that didn't need to be sent, we would each have 12 new
messages in our inboxes EVERY DAY and our server would have to send out 9.6
MILLION extra messages in a year's time. That's a lot of email to announce
a birthday, or ask for the schedule of classes three months from now or to
announce that you did or did not get a call from your Plebe at the appointed
time.

I'm NOT trying to discourage the free use of our lists. Quite the contrary.
Sending a question or posting an answer to a valid problem is exactly what
our lists are all about. We're supposed to help each other. Our Mission is
to promote open communication and facilitate the exchange of advice and
support between parents of Midshipmen. I'd like to see even more of that,
every day.

BUT... What I don't want to happen is that our lists degenerate into chat
rooms, full of Birthday Announcements and silly little one line posts about
frivolous things. If it's really unimportant or if it doesn't pertain to
Navy Parenting, it shouldn't be sent. Period.

Sandi and I have gotten tough about this issue. We won't allow our Mission
and the effectiveness of our lists to be diluted with fluff or stuff that
belongs in a chat room. That's what our USNA-Net Chat Room is for... Go
there and talk about anything you want. No rules - Just civility. But keep
the chat and unnecessary fluff off of the lists. This is serious service
and we all need to remember that.

This goes along with the other Common Sense items I discussed a few days
ago. The lists are not intended to be your own personal chat connections.
You can correspond with whom and as often as you like, as long as you do it
privately. Those who continue to abuse the lists with fluff and unnecessary
messages will have their posting privileges suspended.

PS. I am NOT telling those wonderful "on the scene reporters" who visit the
yard, take pictures, etc. and then report to our lists about YP arrivals and
Ring Dance and other such things to stop. These are important reports for
those who live too far away to visit and rely on others for the written
images so necessary to have a feel for what it's like to be at the United
States Naval Academy. So to all who visit and have the literary skills to
relate your experiences to the rest of us, keep up the good work. We all
appreciate your talents and efforts. - MZ

Margaret,

Your question bounced because you sent it to the USNA-Net list. Only the
Moderators can post to the Net list. Your post should have gone to the
Family List:
 (usna-family@navy-usna.org)

But, let me answer your question. The appropriate attire for a wedding is
Choker Whites. It does not matter if the wedding is in the middle of summer
or the middle of winter. Mike and I got married in February - and my son
wore his Chokers as he escorted me down the aisle. I questioned him on the
appropriateness (you know - white after labor day and all) but he assured
me that this was correct. I was more than happy with this - since he did
look quite handsome!!

You can see the photos on Mike's and my personal home page...

To all USNA-Net subscribers...

WP-ORG our server/host) has informed us that there will be an unavoidable
outage of services this evening sometime after 2300hrs Eastern Time which
will affect all listserver email delivery and the availability of our web
site.

They have said that this outage will not be for more than ten minutes.
Hopefully it will be short and not totally disruptive of our service.

If you try to send email and it is returned at about this time, wait for a
half hour and attempt to send it again.

If you go to our web site during this time and you receive a "404 Page Not
Found" error, try back later.

Sorry about this but WP-ORG controls all of our services and if they choose
to pull down the servers, we have no control over it.

USNA-Net Newsletter August 19, 2001
================================================================

In this issue...
     1. What's New - Mac Wallpaper Instructions
     2. On a much more serious note...
     3. The Site Index - a HOT place for info...

================================================================
This Newsletter is sent to all members of our USNA-Net Listservers. It is
published approximately three times each month and is intended to provide
insight into our service, answers to Frequently Asked Questions, and
Technical Assistance and Information to our membership.
================================================================

     1. What's New - Mac Wallpaper Instructions

For those of you who still insist that Mac are the OS of choice, we finally
found instructions for you on how to capture and set your Desktop Picture to
one of the 39 different Wallpaper Images available in three screen
resolutions each.

Just visit our Web Site at www.USNA-Net.org and click on Wallpaper to be
taken to the correct page. When the page opens, a dialog "Alert" box will
open displaying your computer's current screen resolution. (We can really
look inside your computer to find your screen resolution.) Make a mental
note of it and then when the images all load, click on "Mac Instructions"
for detailed step-by-step instructions on how to set your chosen image as
your very own Desktop Picture.

    2. On a much more serious note...

I have received enough feedback from members to know that it's time I
clarified a few things regarding our Privacy Policy and a few of our Rules
of Operation regarding recent events.

By now, most of our members have heard of the tragedies which have befallen
three USNA families this summer. If you haven't heard, it's probably for
the best. I will not go into any of the details here. That is not why I'm
writing.

I'm writing this newsletter segment to explain to our entire membership what
I have shared with about a dozen members who privately asked me questions
about our Rules in regard to deaths, illness or serious injury of a Mid or
immediate family member.

It's quite simple. Our Rules are that we will NOT discuss ANYTHING related
to a death, illness or serious injury of a Midshipman or a USNA-Net member
under any circumstances.

Announcements of these tragedies fall under our general prohibition about
"Breaking News." Follow Up announcements and continuing discussions fall
under our rules governing the Privacy of our members.

It is not that we do not feel the loss or wish to express sympathy,
compassion, support and even prayers for those so tragically taken from us.
It's that these sorts of things are too private, too sensitive to become the
"topic of the day" on our listservers. The Privacy of the Mids and their
families MUST come before anything else in our considerations.

While it is easy to sit by yourself in front of your computer and think of
those other members out there in cyberland as friends, confidant's, and even
as family, we aren't. Sure we all have a family member involved in some way
with the Academy but, in fact, we are over 2,200 strangers from all over the
world who do not know each other very well at all. How many members could
any of you name without looking in your address book? Of those, how many
spouses' names do you know or home towns or telephone numbers. A few,?
certainly. But we are not that close and we don't have any business, as
almost total strangers, barging in where only true family and friends should
go.

Along another line, we don't want to be put in a position to decide which
family members should be memorialized with a tribute web page or a
collection of donations and which ones were not close enough to our group to
deserve such treatment. Should we stop at mom and dad? What about a
step-dad or a Grandfather? What do we do when a brother or sister is
seriously ill?

So we have decided, rightly or wrongly, to insure that our lists remain
silent on ALL such things. In this way we show thoughtfulness, respect and
true support by not increasing the suffering and misery already heaped too
high on these families and friends. To do anything else is not in keeping
with our stated Mission.

Thank you for your understanding.

     3. The Site Index - a really HOT place for info...

Just a quick note to not forget that our web site's SITE INDEX has loads of
great information in it. Some questions are answered with just a simple
click of the mouse like "What's the telephone number for Hospital Point?" or
"What about Dependant Taxes?" or "What do I so about medical treatment over
Christmas Leave?"

Go to our web site at www.USNA-Net.org and click on "Site Index" in the main
menu on the left of the page. This time, instead of clicking on a letter of
the alphabet and going straight to what you want to know, instead... Scroll
down the rather long list and actually read the topics listed there. If one
link piques your interest, click on it and go exploring inside our web site.
It's like a warm, friendly cave with lots of side shafts to visit and many
interesting things to learn. You'll be absolutely amazed at just how much
is really there.

So before you ask our lists a question, check out the web site's Site Index
for the answer. We continually upgrade it and add to it.

Thanks again for listening...

Go Navy! Beat Army!

A few Short Notes from the front office...

To change your email address...

 - Please send us a note FROM your old address with your OLD email address
and your NEW email address in the body of the message. Please don't send it
to one of the lists. There's no need to tell all 2200 members you've
changed your address.

==================================================

In the "If there wasn't already enough to worry about" category...

- For those of you who will be sending loads of email to your Mid, remember
that the Academy is a hotbed of Computer Viruses and Worms. Make sure that
your Virus Protection Software is UP TO DATE. If not, download the updates
today. It a lot easier to do it now than to wish you had, a day after your
computer crashes.

- DO NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS that come with email. It is the number one way to
get an infection especially if the attachment ends in .exe or .bat.
Remember that Word Processing and Spreadsheet Documents can contain embedded
macros that are as destructive as viruses. AND if an attachment has a
doubled file extension like "document.doc.hat" - It's almost certainly a
virus.

- Worst of all - INSTANT MESSENGER (IM) can now carry viruses in
attachments as well !!! My best advice is to be sure you know what your IM
partner is sending to you. If you receive an attached file during IM, ask
if it's for real and what it is. If you aren't sure, either delete it or
save it and run it through your VP software BEFORE opening it. VP software
does NOT automatically scan attachments sent via IM.

- For more information on the IM Chat virus story, visit...

        http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1005-200-6873022.html?tag=tp_pr

- This whole thing is a real threat for all AOL Instant Messenger, ICQ and
Yahoo Messenger protocols. Be careful with ATTACHMENTS.

- Just thought you'd like to hear the official "skinny" before you had a
problem. For more information on REAL viruses and HOAXES visit our
Frequently Asked Questions Page on the web site.

(This information is provided to you as a courtesy by your Moderators.
Please remember that the publication of "Virus Warnings" by the general
membership on any of our lists is actually prohibited due the high number
of hoaxes which pass through email warnings and which we wish to keep from
our lists to prevent needless worry. IF you have concerns about a virus
warning, please send it to me and we'll verify it and pass it on to the
lists if it is a real threat. Thanks - MZ)
==================================================

One last thing...

- Don't forget to visit the our Classified Advertisements page. It's had
lots of ads for everything from Care Package Providers to Cars For Sale to
Extra Navy Football Tickets to Homes for Rent for Special Events.

- This is a service FOR Members Only - BY Members Only. You never know what
you might find inside the USNA-Net Classifieds. Make it a habit to check
the Classifieds about once a week because ads only hang around for a couple
of weeks. There's always something new to see. If you have something to
sell, list it there. The Ads are free. How much better can it get?

To All,

I have some more photos for you to enjoy!!

First, Susan Traylor sent me three pictures that she took during PPW - one
shows C Company and the other two show the cannon salute. Nice photos,
worth a look. They are on the PPW photo page. On the Photo Gallery page, I
have moved the PPW and the YP (4th block) Photos into the Jan - Dec 2001
column. Just look at the bottom of the column.

The other NEW photos are some that have been taken since PPW. They cover
the end of summer Sea Trials that the Plebes went through - show the Plebe
Turnover Parade, and there are even some photos of Reform Night (formerly
called "Hell-O Night").

Jeanette Dean sent me a collection of photos and I chose 76 of them to scan
and display. You will have fun seeing the different things that were
involved in the day of Sea Trials - these are amazing shots - there is much
mud, and, obviously, much fun. You will even get a chance to see the new
Rock Climbing Wall at the Yard!! These are exceptionally good photos that
show a lot of plebes and a lot of Detailers. Thanks for sending these to
me, Jeanette!

Rick Hayes sent some photos that he took of the Plebe Turnover Parade.
These are nice shots that give you the flavor of the first glimpse that the
Upper-Class got of the Class of 2005. Thanks for sharing, Rick.

The last photos were sent to me by Chuck Cooper. He happened to be on the
Yard on Reform Night and got some terrific shots of many companies as they
formed and marched on the Yard that day/early evening. There are many faces
and many opportunities for you to catch a glimpse of your plebe (and of your
Detailer, you upper-class parents!). Thanks so much for sending these to
me.

I have mailed the photos back to their owners, except for Chuck Cooper's.
He said I could keep them. If you see someone you know in one of his
photos, contact me and I'll see that you get a copy.

A full 100 new photos! There should be at least ONE that will interest
you!! :>)

As always, you can find these on the Photo Gallery page of the website:
www.usna-net.org Click on the "Photo Gallery" menu item on the left side
of the page. When the Photo page opens, just click onto " After PPW to
Reform" at the top of the table - just below the "Roller Coaster" quote.

I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I did!
