IMPORTANT OFFICIAL NEWS - PLEASE READ IMMEDIATELY

The following was received this evening and is offered as "OFFICIAL"
instructions on Care Packages for ALL parents of Midshipmen.

This change applies to ALL packages sent to the Academy via HAND DELIVERY to
the Main Office at Bancroft Hall.

Summary... All packages which are hand delivered to a Midshipman at the
Main Office of Bancroft will only be accepted if the Midshipman has
previously notified the Main Office of its expected arrival. If the Mid has
not notified the Main Office that the package is expected BEFORE the package
arrives , it will NOT be accepted. This includes all care packages which
are delivered by local care package providers, parents and sponsors. This
does NOT affect packages delivered via US Mail or Package Delivery Services
such as UPS or FedEx.

published as
needed and is intended to provide insight into our service, answers to
Frequently Asked
Questions, and Technical Assistance and Information to our membership.
================================================================

     1. What's New - USNA-Net Screen Savers Featured on Moochers.com

While it's not a big thing, we wanted you to know that the three Screen
Savers which we assembled for our members were discovered by
www.Moochers.com ( a Canadian Freeware Web Site ) and listed as their Find
of the Day for October 12th. It's nice to know that what we do on our
USNA-Net Web Site is recognized by an international library of freeware and
is good enough to have been added to their permanent listings.

If you haven't downloaded the Screen Savers (which come complete with
background music which you can mute), you can find them by going to our main
web page at www.USNA-Net.org and clicking on the Screen Savers Graphic on
the right side of the page just below USNA CAM. (Don't forget to click on
"How to Install" for printable instructions.)

     2. Email Attachments - Another Warning !

In the past couple of days, we have had several members with Virus
infections on their computers attempt to send Attachments to our Lists with
viruses inside. Our Software catches these and stops them cold. But each
of our members needs to be aware that MOST viruses are transmitted via Email
Attachments and take the necessary precautions to prevent their computers
from becoming infected.

NEVER OPEN AN ATTACHMENT that you are not expecting, even from someone you
know. Most people who get a computer virus DON'T KNOW they are infected and
the virus is spreading itself to everyone in their address book without the
sender's knowledge. Make sure you have the latest Anti-Virus Software
installed on your computer, that it is always up to date and that it is
always turned on. Don't think, "It can't happen to me." It's not a matter
of "if." It only a matter of "when." If you haven't checked your computer
for viruses because you say, "I never open attachments." - Answer this
one... Are you the ONLY member of your household who uses this machine?
Could your spouse or kids have opened an infected attachment without telling
you? Especially if it's subject line says something about Snow White and
the Seven Dwarfs??? Right now, as you read this, there are at least two of
our members who are infected with this particular virus but I can't identify
who they are from their attempts to send it to the rest of you. And
yesterday, we had two different members, send a different virus to us but we
were able to warn them that they were infected because their virus leaves
enough of their address intact to be able to identify them. Be Safe!
Check!

     3. Rumors & Breaking News

With Security at the Yard being at a more heightened state lately, we
realize that all of our members are very concerned about their Mids. We, at
USNA-Net, wish to express our sincerest appreciation to all of our loyal
members who have exhibited considerable composure during these troubled
times and who have refrained from overreacting to rumors and breaking news
by sending such things to our Lists. Even though our Rules of Operation
specifically prohibit such postings (Breaking news stories), we realize that
our membership has really pulled together and kept cool heads during the
past weeks. Thank you all. It has made our jobs as Moderators easier and
really shown everyone just how mature and knowledgeable our membership
really is.

Please know that we have many "official" contacts at the Academy who are
more than eager to pass on pertinent information in a timely manner about
the latest developments where your Mids' safety is involved. Your
Moderators have been in contact with those "official" contacts each and
every time there has been anything which might be of concern and we will
continue to keep you as up to date as security measures permit. Please keep
in mind that our USNA-Net lists are not in the business of speculating about
who the next Supe will be, nor are we passing along bogus rumors about
Security Breaches at the Academy. It is totally irresponsible for any list
to indulge in such activities and even more so for a list Moderator to do
this sort of thing no matter how well connected with the Navy they may feel
they are. On our USNA-Net lists, we will continue to keep you informed with
the latest facts, not rumors, speculations or half truths. If you have a
concern or question, contact Sandi or me directly at Moderator@USNA-Net.org
and we can confirm the facts for you instead of alarming the entire
membership with hearsay.

     4. Using the Correct Lists

Please remember that we have multiple Lists at USNA-Net, each designed for
specific discussion topics of interest to those subscribed. Please keep
Plebe discussions on our Plebe list, Sports stuff on our Sports List, etc.
There are a few reasons for this but the most important is the size of our
lists. We have over 2,200 members in total. 99% of them belong to
USNA-Family. Of those members, over 1,400 of them also belong to USNA-Plebe
but only 600 of these Plebe List members are actually '05 Parents. The
other 800 who belong to this list are upper-class parents who belong to the
Plebe list for the sole purpose for being there to give out advise and
support to the Plebe Parents. Nowhere else can you find such a dedicated
group of parents who put up with all of the newbie questions just so that
Plebe Parents can benefit from their past experience.

We have a favor to ask all of our members... Please ask yourself (BEFORE
you hit the send key), "Which list should I send this to?" If it is a Plebe
thing, send it to USNA-Plebe@USNA-Net.org. If it is NOT about Plebe stuff
and would be of interest to the entire membership, send it to
USNA-Family@USNA-Net.org. Likewise, use the Sports and Prayer lists for
those respective topics as well. Also, if you see a Plebe or Sports
question asked on our Family lists in error, please answer it on USNA-Plebe
to help keep things tidy as much as possible. Thanks.

     5. Privacy Issues & Forwarding List Messages

A number of our Members have inquired to your Moderators about our Privacy
Policy and is it permissible to forward things which they read on our Lists
to others or their Mids? Here's what we have told them...

It is NEVER permissible to forward an entire email (with names and email
addresses intact) to any non-member. This is done to protect the Privacy of
our Membership. Period. Members who violate this rule will be removed from
our lists without additional warning. Having said that, there are some
things which are of interest to others which may be sent along to
non-members under certain common sense situations. For instance... Concert
information, Event Schedules, or general items about Yard activities, etc.
These sorts of things are usually public knowledge and as long as they are
sent WITHOUT including any personal member information such as names and
email addresses to another party, they may be freely sent.

Here's where the common sense part comes in. From time to time, a member
will relate a particularly embarrassing story about a son or daughter, or
send us a plea for help with a Mid's problem. This is the sort of thing
which MUST remain between members only and should NEVER be sent to anyone
outside our organization. Doing so is a serious breach of that member's
(and their Mid's) right to privacy and will be dealt with quickly and
without appeal. Our Mission is to help other parents. If our membership
can't trust that other members to keep private information private, they
will not write to the lists when they most need our help. We can't and
won't allow that to happen. On USNA-Net, we value each and every member's
privacy and will do everything to protect it and enforce our Rules.

     6. Subscribing - Unsubscribing - Changing Subscription Information

Just a short reminder that all Administrative Requests (Subscribe,
Unsubscribe, Change Email Addresses, etc.) are to be sent to your Moderators
at Moderator@USNA-Net.org and NOT to the actual list. We have installed
filters to prevent most of these requests from being sent to all 2,200
members but they only catch specific words and every once in a while a
members finds a new and different way to say "Remove me" or "Take me off,"
etc. Hopefully, a gentle reminder is all that is needed.

Also, if you are CHANGING your email address, drop us a note FROM your OLD
address telling us what your old AND your new addresses are. And SIGN IT
with a real first and last name. Not everyone in the front office knows
that xyz1234@hotmail.com is really Mary Smith's old email address. Take a
little pity on your Moderators and help us to not have to be mind readers
back here in Ohio. :>)

     7. FUND DRIVE RESULTS - 2001

Our first annual Fund Drive was an overwhelming success. We completed it in
just SIX DAYS and with only two request messages being sent out (one of
which was simply a paragraph at the end of another message and hardly even
counts as a request.) We heard from all parts of the country and around the
world. We received donations from every class and even from a few graduate
parents who still hang in there to help support our efforts even after their
Mid is out in the fleet. Thanks so much to everyone who sent in their
contributions. Here's how it ended up...

Donations sought: $4,900.00 for twelve months operating budget.
Donations received: $6,933.02 from 159 donors. 141.5% of our goal
!!!

We now have enough funding to operate this fine organization of Parents
Helping Parents well into 2003 without having to ask for additional funds.
In addition to operating our USNA-Net Lists, we also host TEN USNA Parents'
Club Web Sites with several more in development as we speak. We cover the
cost of their Domain Name Registration plus provide a completely FREE place
for these clubs to host their club's web site without cost or restriction on
content for as long as they wish to maintain a web presence for their
members. And we couldn't have done any of this without YOU, our loyal Navy
Family and your total support of our new server and of USNA-Net, Inc.
Thanks, again.

    8. Links of Interest from our Web Site

Just because a few of you never have enough time to search some of this
stuff out on your own, we've listed a few things on our www.USNA-Net.org web
site which we consider "must visits." Have Fun...

To all,

As Moderator of these lists I have a very special request on behalf of our
members...

Please take the time to REPLY TO THE LIST instead of directly to the
individual who posted a question or has asked for help with a problem.

While we all understand that sometimes a private response is absolutely
necessary, most times it is not and by sending your reply (as helpful as it
may be) to the original poster only, you are depriving your fellow members
of our lists of your valuable and timely advise which might otherwise
benefit many, many other members.

Remember, our goal here is to provide help for other parents. - That's
plural.

Sending your gems of wisdom to only one person will solve the immediate
problem but will not benefit our membership in the long run. Even though
another member may not have that same problem today, that doesn't mean that
they will never need your advise in the future.

Please remember to SHARE your help with all of our members whenever
possible. After all, that's what our Lists are all about...

        Parents Helping Parents.

Thank you all for your cooperation.

PS - To all those who say they are *afraid* to post...
On behalf of the entire membership of caring USNA-Net Parents, we all
promise to be as supportive and helpful as possible to our newbies so that
we all can benefit from this service. No one was ever corrected for just
using the lists as they were intended. And for those AOL users who can't
send in Plain Text, we have lifted the ban on Rich Text Formatted messages.
So what's your excuse now?

Our List addresses for those who may have forgotten...
USNA-Family@USNA-Net.org for General Questions of interest to all.
USNA-Plebe@USNA-Net.org for Plebe Issues.
USNA-Sports@USNA-Net.org for Sports related things.

To all,

We heard this morning - and verified with the Navy Ticket Office - that your
Mid can buy two more tickets to the Army/Navy game (for a total of FOUR).

Your Mid HAS to go to the ticket office to buy them - YOU cannot do this for
him/her.

Just thought we would pass this along.

It is against our rules to ask for tickets for ANYTHING on our lists. It is
ONLY permissible to seek or to sell items (any items) on the Classifieds
page.

Posting a request of this nature to the lists is unfair to all of you who
have followed the rules and placed your requests on the Classifieds page.

If you are not, yet, familiar with our Rules of Operation, please take a
moment to re-read them at: www.usna-net.org/rules.html
