Someone asked about travel attire while on leave. Here is the "Official"

Sir,

Midshipmen have been encouraged to travel in uniform because the uniform is
a direct representation of who we are and it has a calming effect on the
public. All class rules pertaining to civilian clothes still apply. 3/c
and 4/c must leave and return in proper uniform, and the upper two classes
are allowed to leave and return in proper civilian attire.

Very Respectfully,
Brigade Adjutant

There you have it. While your Mid should know this, it's nice to have our
Parents Lists get the word as well.

To our AOL Members ONLY...

*** If you are not an AOL user you may stop reading here and skip this
message. ***
*** Thanks. MZ ***

Two things.

First, we have been asked about Version 7.0. We see no reason to not
upgrade as soon as possible. It appears that this new version adds back the
ability to send email in Plain Text. This is a real benefit to all AOL
users. While we have dropped our NO RTF restriction in anticipation of
being able to strip all Rich Text code from incoming email very soon, it is
still preferable to send all of your mail in Plain Text to keep messages
small and not fill up the mailboxes of your addressees.

Next, and MOST IMPORTANTLY ----

One of you (we don't know who) is infected with the HaHaHa Sexy Snow White
Virus otherwise known as the W32/Hybris.gen @MM virus. Every time this
particular AOL member turns on their computer and establishes a connection
to the internet, their computer (without their knowledge) attempts to send
the virus to everyone in their address book, including our lists.

Our list software filters out attached viruses so the is NO WAY anyone,
including the infected computer, could have gotten this virus from our
lists. But... Someone at that household opened the original attachment (it
probably came from another friend who is also infected) and looked at the
story about how Snow White just turned 18 and the dwarfs were going to do
something special for her. That's all it took. Just opening the attachment
and they were infected. That's how computer viruses work.

Now... We have to find that member and get them to disinfect their
computer. If you run Windows and are an AOL user, PLEASE run your
Anti-Virus Software to check for this virus. If you don't have Anti-Virus
software installed on your machine, what are you waiting for???? This virus
and others that you can contract from email can destroy everything on your
computer's hard drive and cost you big time to get it back up and running -
not to mention the loss of all your important files.

I wish I could tell you more but I can only identify the sender as
"oemcomputer" using AOL as their email client. The infected computer is
probably a generic brand (hence the "oemcomputer" name) and is probably
being used by a computer novice who has never changed the computer's System
Name. Since we have over 800 AOL users signed up to USNA-Net, I can't be
more specific.

Do your part to help yourself and those in your address book. They are all
susceptible to attacks from YOUR infected computer.

Just one more thing... NEVER OPEN ATTACHMENTS TO EMAIL !!! Unless you
specifically know what they are and were EXPECTING them to arrive. Some of
the latest viruses masquerade as attachments from someone you know. So
unless you are expecting an attached photo or something (even from YOUR Mid)
don't open it unless you've scanned it with the latest version of AV
software.

More information about the HaHaHa Sexy Virus may be found at...
http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=98873&

Sorry this went so long but it was really important.

Go Navy - Beat amry !

================================================================
This Newsletter is sent to all members of our USNA-Net Listservers. It is
published approximately three times each month and is intended to provide
insight into our service, answers to Frequently Asked Questions, and
Technical Assistance and Information to our membership.
================================================================

     1. What's new - Web Photos - How to get instant copies.

We're always posting new photos to our web site's Photo Gallery. Sandi and
I like to post photos with faces so that our members can have the pleasure
of finding their Mid among all of the others. Lots of our members have
found their "Waldo" in our Photo Gallery and we are always happy to send of
a hard copy of the photo if we have one here at USNA-Net Ops but did you
know that you can capture and print your very own copy of almost anything
that appears on the Internet? We won't go into copyright issues for now but
as long as you're not making money off of it or re-publishing it, you can
copy just about anything for your own personal use. Here's how...

When you get the picture up on your Windows Computer Screen, just right
click your mouse on the picture and select "Save Picture As..." Then tell
the computer where to store the photo on your hard drive. That's all there
is to it. You can then view it using almost any Picture or Paint program (a
very simple Paint Program comes with every Windows machine) and even print
it out if you have a color printer. The resolution might not be the
greatest since most pics on the Net are set up at low resolution for
download speed since your monitor can only display 72 dpi (dots per inch).
Any higher resolution is generally wasted on Internet images. Nonetheless,
if you want to print out a snapshot of your favorite Mid and you find it in
our Photo Gallery, you can have him hanging on your refrigerator in no time.

    2. Security

With recent events being what they are, there has been a lot of concern
among our members over Base Security at the Academy. As you all know
conditions are always in a state of flux in this regard. As a support
group, Sandi and I have made every effort to keep our membership informed of
anything that is relevant to getting on the Yard. We have been helped by
the Base Ops Office in this regard and will continue to pass on whatever the
Academy feels is necessary for our members to know.

This brings me to the point of this item... As a parental support group, it
is NOT our place to discuss ANY security measures on our lists which the
Academy may or may not have in place for the safety of our Mids. (Loose
lips sink ships!) Whatever information we need as parents, we can gain
through visiting the Public Affairs Office web site. We will no longer
allow discussions of ANY security issues to take place on our lists. This
goes for security at football games (both on and off the Yard) as well as
ANY other event or visitation including concerts, scrimmages, sporting
events, etc. or just the ordinary comings and goings of Parents to the Yard.
Expect long lines and tight security. Get there early and make allowances
for it in your plans. But whatever you do, do not bring it up in any
messages to our lists. Our Mids are too precious to put at risk with casual
talk about security measures.

     3. Confidentiality

Almost along the same vein of thought, I wanted to remind our membership
that Sandi and I take a great deal of care to insure that our members and
their personal information (like names, email addresses, phone numbers,
etc.) are kept confidential. But that isn't enough. Our members MUST
respect the confidentiality of our lists as well. This means that our
members must not forward messages which appear on our list to non-members or
allow non-members to have access to our lists, our message traffic or our
archives.

There are two instances in particular which come to mind. Members who send
list messages to their Midshipmen are violating our Privacy Rule. We
discuss many things on our lists which are intended 'For Parents Only!"
Mids do not share our parental perspective and most of the time don't care
what is happening on our lists. If you must share a piece of information
with your Mid, make sure that you do NOT just forward a list message to him
or her. Take the time to cut and paste (or completely rewrite) the
information into a NEW message so that the names and email addresses of our
members and their Mids &/or Companies are not revealed. This is especially
true of anything which might be embarrassing to a Mid if his classmates
should find out. Please use common sense and remember that with email,
things can be distributed to thousands of others with the click of the send
button.

Another potential problem exists with regard to those members who have
chosen to join other Parental lists outside the USNA-Net family. While we
sincerely respect any member's choice to participate in any other list which
they may find informative or useful, we must remind OUR members that it is a
serious breach of our Privacy Rule to send any message which is sent to OUR
lists to another list. There exists a real expectation of Privacy on our
lists that issues, topics and discussions which take place on any USNA-Net
list are NOT shared with non-members on any other list. It is also a
serious breach of trust to send another member's words or thoughts to any
non-USNA-Net family member. So please, if you have chosen to participate in
other parental mailing lists, remember that our 2,200 members will always be
here for you but we expect that each of you will continue to respect our
expectation of Privacy.

     4. Chain Letters

Along the same lines are the infamous "chain letters" which seem to surface
from time to time. Some are prayerful. Others are funny. And some are just
plain nuisances. But all of them require that you send them on to X number
of friends or worse yet, to everyone you know. If you just can't ignore
them or hit the delete key, please be aware that inside your address book
are the names and email addresses of everyone to whom you've ever written an
email if you have left your email program set up the way it comes from the
factory - set to include all addressees in your address book. This includes
Mary, Bob and Bill PLUS all of our USNA-Net members to whom you've ever
responded AND our actual list addresses if you've ever, even once, sent a
message to, or in response to, a USNA-Net list message.

This means that when you choose to send that chain letter to everyone in
your address book, you are sending it to all of our lists as well. Not
good.

It also means, unless you know how to send "Blind Copies," that you're
sending everyone in your address book the addresses of everyone else in your
address book. This is just plain irresponsible and again violates the
expectation of privacy that your friends and fellow list members had when
they corresponded with you, either privately or via our lists. You wouldn't
want USNA-Net to PUBLISH your name and email address, would you? So please
don't pass along chain letters or jokes or whatever with tens or hundreds of
email addresses included in the "TO:" line. It's just not good form.

     5. Using Multiple Lists - Do's and Don'ts

At USNA-Net, we have more than ONE parents list. With our 2,200 members,
it's a must. Here's a little bit of the why's and wherefore's behind the
different lists.

You are receiving this message via our Master List (USNA-Net@USNA-Net.org).
We use it to reach everyone who subscribes to our service when we have to
send out general announcements and this Newsletter. No matter what other
USNA-Net lists you belong to, you are also subscribed to this list. NO ONE
may post a message to it except for your Moderators.

Next we have USNA-Family (USNA-Family@USNA-Net.org). With only a few
exceptions EVERYONE belongs to this list. It is used by all of our members
for messages of "general" interest to all parents. All of our members may
post to this list.

So far, so good but this is where it gets a little tricky. You see, not all
of our members want to participate in discussions about lacrosse or prayer
related messages or Plebe related stuff. In fact a few of them even
complained (early on in our formation) about the excessive numbers of these
sorts of messages in which they had little or no interest. Some of these
members receive their email at work and have trouble sorting through all of
the "other" stuff to get to the messages they wanted to read. Soooooo...
We put on our thinking caps and decided that we would form extra lists. One
dedicated to Sports, one dedicated to Plebe issues and another (our most
recent) dedicated to serving the Religious needs of our members. Hence,
USNA-Sports, USNA-Plebe and USNA-Prayer.

As I said, EVERYONE is on USNA-Family but we offer the other three lists so
that if a member want to go on and on about what underwear to pack for Plebe
Summer, she can do it without bothering all of those upper-class parents who
don't want to relive the good old days. Now, don't get me wrong. Of the
1,400 or so Parents who are currently subscribed to USNA-Plebe, only about
600 of them are from the Plebe Class of 2005. The other EIGHT HUNDRED
members of USNA-Plebe are upper-class parents who want to stay on that list
to assist Plebe Parents with Plebe stuff.

Likewise, everyone on the Sports and Prayer lists are also members of
USNA-Family but they have their own list for discussing next week's football
game or Praying for a victorious outcome. :>) This way we can accommodate
a wider variety of subjects while keeping unwanted message traffic out of
the mailboxes of those who don't want to Pray for the Plebes to win their
Football bets.

So next time, you have a message to send, just decide which list it should
go to and send it on its way. If it deals with a Plebe topic, send it to
USNA-Plebe@USNA-Net.org. If it deals with any kind of sports stuff, send it
to USNA-Net@USNA-Net.org. And if it has any religious significance, send it
to USNA-Prayer@USNA-Net.org. Simple.

Oh! By the way... Don't send the same message to more than one of our
lists since that sends it more than once to each of the members that belong
to more than one of our lists. Not only does that cause our members to
receive multiple copies of your message, it is a whole lot of unnecessary
work for our server. And that brings me to the last part of this
newsletter...

     6. It takes time...

Whenever you hit the send key when sending messages to our lists, try to
remember that even for our very fast server and our very fast connection to
the Internet (our new server is tied directly to the Internet Backbone and
has bandwidth up the wahzoo...), it still takes time for your message to be
delivered back to you. Our messages are sent in alphabetical order by Mid's
last name. So if your are at or near the end of the alphabet, it may take
an hour or more for your message to pop back up in YOUR inbox. Then there
is YOUR Internet Service Provider (ISP) to think about. Your ISP may be
busy or have a slow connection to the Internet Backbone. There may be other
servers in between (relays) which could slow things up. Or worst of all,
YOUR mailbox may be full and the message is refused by our ISP.

Please try to be patient. Most ISPs will try repeatedly to deliver messages
to you, trying every few minutes or hours for as much as FIVE DAYS to send
it to you before giving up. Unfortunately when you've sent a message to our
members and a member's ISP can't send it through immediately, your
Moderators get a Delivery Problem Notification. We get one when it first
can't be delivered, sometimes ISPs will send follow up messages every time
it tries unsuccessfully and then finally another message when it finally
gives up. Right now as I type this, there are 190 such messages in my
"Delivery Problems" folder starting from just last night at midnight.

So please, have a little pity on your poor Moderator and notify us promptly
about address changes (send them to moderator@USNA-Net.org) and check your
mail more than once a week. When your mailbox fills up it can cause lots of
extra Delivery Problem messages for your list moderators. This is
especially true of the web based services such as Hotmail and Juno, etc.

That's all for now.

Go Navy - Beat army !!!!

Dear Friends,

In keeping with our never ending search for things which may be of value to
our members, Sandi and I have found a couple of items in which we thought
you would be very interested.

It seems that ever since WWII, families with a son or daughter, grandson or
granddaughter in the Military have displayed a pennant with a Blue Star in
the front window of their home to let others know that their family has a
Serviceman in the Military. When more than one son or daughter is serving
simultaneously, the pennant displays the corresponding number of Blue Stars.
And if a family member is lost in service to their country, the blue star is
replaced with a Gold Star.

When we went looking for these pennants for ourselves, we discovered that
the only source for them was having difficulty getting them from their
overseas supplier and so we went about finding a reliable, American supplier
for the pennants. We have found such a source for them and USNA-Net is now
making them available to our members at a substantial discount from the
advertised retail price we found on the Internet. You can find them in the
NEWEST Feature of our USNA-Net.org web site - our On-Line Store.

Sandi and I have also commissioned a new Cloisonné Pin for our members which
features the words USNA MOM displayed over Red, White and Blue Ribbons to be
worn proudly by every Mom with a Midshipman at the Naval Academy.

The USNA MOM Cloisonné Pin cannot be obtained anywhere else except our New
On-Line Store. And since our moms take a great deal of PRIDE in the
endeavors of their Mids, we thought that these pins would make for a "must
have" for many of our members. (Remember that USNA-Net members have been
wearing Red, White and Blue Ribbons to signify membership in USNA-Net for
over three years now.) What better way to combine your Pride in your Mid,
in being a USNA-Net member and in being an American, than wearing this Pin?

Both items are Made in America of the finest materials and workmanship
available. (A portion of the purchase price will go toward offsetting the
operating costs of operating our lists and web server.)

Check out the new On-Line Store by going to our web site at www.USNA-Net.org
and clicking on the flashing Icon in the middle of the main page. We think
you will be very pleased with these exclusive USNA-Net items.

Thanks again for all you do for our lists.

A number of you have written to say that when you went to the web site
looking for the new Icon, it wasn't there. Trust me, it is. What is
happening is that your computer is ignoring the new page contents and
displaying the page from your computers memory of the last time you visited
the page. It's using what is called your computer's cache.

It's faster for your computer to bring a copy of the OLD page up from cache
on your hard drive than to download it again from the Internet. BUT... The
problem with that is you don't see anything new that has been added since
your last visit. You may be missing a whole lot of new stuff on other pages
as well with this setup.

To see new content immediately, hold down the Shift Key while you click on
the "Refresh Button" at the top of your browser's main window. This will
force the browser to download a NEW copy of the page and viola' there's the
new page.

To avoid this problem in the future, you need to alter your browser's
default settings to force it to check for new content upon every visit. If
there are changes, the computer will use the NEW content. If not, it will
use the old cache copy and save the download time anyway. (Why the program
manufacturers don't make this the default setting is beyond me.)

To change the default settings on Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Click on
TOOLS then INTERNET OPTIONS and then under "Temporary Internet files" click
on SETTINGS. When the new window opens, look for "Check for newer versions
of the stored pages:" and make sure that EVERY VISIT TO THE PAGE is checked.
Click on OK and then OK again to save the new settings. That's all there is
to it and you will never have this problem again.

Then when we put up new photos or change stuff around on the web site, you
will see it immediately. Without this setting, you may never know of the
many updates that we make almost weekly to the web site.

Hope this helps.

One more small detail. The On-Line Store is a small endeavor for our web
site and we are trying to minimize the costs involved. In order to do that
we have optioned to NOT purchase our own digital certificate (about $500)
for secure Internet transactions. Instead, we are using one supplied by our
service provider which is perfectly secure but may cause some visitor to get
a message warning about the mis-match. This is PERFECTLY ALRIGHT. Your
credit card information is transmitted using highest level of encryption
available. Please use the on-line order forms with our assurance that
everything is absolutely secure.

Thanks again.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Please allow me to remind all of you that you each have an obligation to
read and follow our rules of operation when sending messages to our lists.
I understand that in the coming weeks as the A/N game approaches, there will
be growing enthusiasm and with it will come increased message traffic about
that particular sporting event but all of it belongs on USNA-Sports and not
on ANY of our other lists.

There are over 1,000 members of USNA-Net who have specifically NOT
subscribed to USNA-Sports because, presumably, they do not wish to receive
ANY email about Sports stuff. Sending messages to the wrong email address
is extremely inconsiderate of those members' wishes.

=================================================
IMPORTANT -
The information in one of these mis-addressed emails this morning quoted the
Veterans' Stadium Web Site and that information is NOT what was sent to
ticket holders along with their tickets. Please read and abide by the
instructions that were mailed to you regarding what you can bring into the
stadium and disregard the information posted on the Stadium Web site and
quoted in the earlier email.
=================================================

TICKETS NEEDED
Also - a quick note that many members still need tickets and are posting Ads
in our Classifieds. Please do what you can to get your extra tickets to
these folks as soon as possible. If you have tickets which you will not be
using - DO NOT POST AN AD - just go to the classified ads on our web site
and find a WANTED ad. Every ticket that has been available has been gobbled
up the first few hours it was advertised. If you place a Tickets For Sale
ad, I will just have to go in and remove it within hours of it being put up
and that makes extra work for your Moderators.

Just in case you forgot or misplaced this info...

User Name: brigade
Password: bancroft (all lowercase)

Thank you all for your understanding and cooperation.

[GRAY MATTER] ARTICLE BY JACKIE WHITESIDE, '93

Bridge the Gap

The West Point Bicentennial Engineering Design Contest is a nationwide,
internet-based competition to promote math, science, and technology
education in elementary and secondary schools in the United States.
Students is grades K-12 are challenged to create virtual bridges using an
award winning software package called the West Point Bridge Designer. The
goal of the contest is to model a bridge that meets a realistic set of
design specifications, is structurally adequate, and can be built with a
minimal cost. Participation in the contest is free.

With the West Point Bridge Designer software, students are introduced to
engineering through the design of a steel highway bridge. Students can work
individually or on a 2 person team. Teams can submit as many bridge designs
as they like but only the best design will be saved and included in the
contest standings.

Initially, participants register for the contest, download the software,
design a bridge, and submit their design electronically for judging. A
contest scoreboard breaks competitors into four geographical zones for
awards and lets competitors see how they stand. The Qualifying Round runs
from 11 November 2001 through 28 February 2002. The top 10 contestants from
each of the four zones enter the Semi-Final Round, which occurs on 16 March
2002. On that day, teams will download, develop, and submit a design for a
new bridge. The top team from each zone and the top 2 teams overall will be
invited to West Point for the Final Round of the contest. The all expenses
paid trip takes place over the weekend of 26 April, during which contestants
will have a chance to see West Point, compete in the final 2 hour round, and
attend the contest banquet.

The prizes are significant. Each member of the first place team will
receive a $15,000 scholarship. Each member of the second place team will
receive a $10,000 scholarship while members of the third place team get a
$5,000 scholarship each. In addition, everyone who successfully competes in
the Final Round will also receive a notebook computer.

Sponsored by the United States Military Academy's Department of Civil and
Mechanical Engineering, the contest is fitting because West Point was the
first school of engineering in the United States. The contest not only
commemorates the Academy's Bicentennial but it is also commemorates the
150th Anniversary of the American Society of Civil Engineers - the first
national professional engineering society in the United States. Funding for
the contest came from multiple sources, including the Association of
Graduates, the American Society of Engineers, Verizon, the Department of the
Army, and private individuals.

Many of the nation's most famous early engineers were West Pointers. Herman
Haupt, Class of 1835, was the Chief Engineer for the Union Army and was a
pioneer in truss bridge design. Montgomery Meigs, Class of 1836, built our
nation's Capitol dome. Thomas Casey, Class of 1852, is credited with
completing the Washington Monument. George W. Goethals, class of 1880, was
the chief engineer working on the Panama Canal. Given the Academy's
distinguished 200 year history and these famous graduates, the Academy's
Bicentennial Year is the perfect time for the Engineering Design Contest.
Who knows...participants in this contest may be West Point's future famous
graduates.

Author's Note: To learn more about the project, head to the West Point
Bicentennial Engineering Design Contest website at
www.usma.edu/bridgecontest. You can also help spread the word about the
contest by visiting your local schools and media outlets. Let educators,
students, and journalists know there is a ready to print article about the
contest available in the resource section of the contest site. There is
also a simple flyer you can print and distribute to your schools and
libraries.

FOUNDATION UPDATE: Yard access, Lucky Bag, News Clips

Yard Access:

Activities of the Naval Academy involving outside groups (athletic teams,
clubs, tours, class reunions, meetings, tourists, etc.) are being
accommodated. Important in the orderly handling of these events/activities
is early planning and coordination. USNA has limited assets to provide
specialized requests, so early liaison is important.

FAQs are now available at www.usna.edu/SecuInfoPers/FAQS.htm. Please go to
this site and review the FAQs. The FAQs cover all manner of events and
access at USNA-concerts to weddings, athletic contests to meetings.

The USNA "Courtesy" shuttle bus will continue indefinitely, 0900-2200 daily.
Please note: The Shuttle service over the four day Thanksgiving Holiday
will be modified.

It is important now more than ever, to keep the lines of communication open
with your son or daughter. Please know that they have been briefed on
security matters and are knowledgeable of what is required of them as
Midshipmen. If your mid has a question, they should go to their company
officer for clarification. Also, make sure that your mid has updated their
parent file, if you have recently moved or changed your phone number.

Lucky Bag Update:

Many parents have been calling about Lucky Bag ads for the back of the
yearbook. A letter regarding these ads will be mailed over the holidays and
parents should wait until these letters go out to call or take action. Visit
the Lucky Bag web site for general information at www.usna.edu/LuckyBag and
future updates - MIDN John Augusto, Editor in Chief, 02 Lucky Bag. You can
also send an e-mail to yearbook@usna.edu or call (410) 293-5094.

News Clips:

The USNA Alumni Association has a wonderful service that allows you to view
past and present news articles about the USNA, USNA graduates, etc.
Information is available from a variety of sources and can be found at
www.usna.com - scroll down to the USNA In the News and select the archives
section or one of the daily posted articles.

I know that this may not help you, coming as late as it has...but the
following information was just sent to me. The Baltimore Sun newspaper had
an article today that there is new transportation between BWI and
Annapolis. Starting today, you can ride from Annapolis to BWI via the Sky
Blue route, an express shuttle operated by Annapolis Transit that will take
you from Annapolis to BWI and Arundel Mills for a one-way fare of $3. For
more information about the Sky Blue route call 410-263-7964.

This Newsletter is sent to all members of our USNA-Net Listservers. It is
published approximately three times each month and is intended to provide
insight into our service, answers to Frequently Asked Questions, and
Technical Assistance and Information to our membership.
================================================================

A note from Mike and Sandi... We hope that you have all enjoyed your
Thanksgiving Weekend and that everything was better than you had wished it
would be. Remember that in just 20 days, your Mids will all be headed home
again for the Holiday Break. Take heart. They'll be back in less than
three weeks. In the meantime, remember that all your friends on USNA-Net
are here for you. Tell our USNA-Family list all about your Thanksgiving
experiences and share your advice about what to gifts to give for the
Holidays. We all still have a little shopping to do.

     1. USNA-06 List

Believe it or not, we actually have had a number of parents request to
subscribe who will have Mids in the coming Class of 2006. In past years, we
have not opened membership to incoming parents until April 15th (IRS Day) of
the Spring before their Plebe Summer. In this way, we tried to keep some of
the repetition of questions from these new Plebe Parents to a minimum.
(Ha!)

This year, we thought we'd try it differently. We will be admitting all
incoming '06 Parents to our lists as soon as they find us and wish to subscr
ibe but instead of placing them directly into USNA-Plebe, we will add them
to a NEW list, USNA-06. While on that list, they will receive copies of all
of the messages sent to Net, Family and Plebe but will not have posting
privileges to those lists until 4/15/02. They will be able to send messages
to their own USNA-06 list but not to the primary lists. Think of it as
associate memberships. When 4/15 comes around they will be merged into
USNA-Plebe and the USNA-06 list will be retired.

In order for this to work, however, we can't leave them alone on the USNA-06
list until April 15th. I am requesting volunteers from our existing
membership to join the USNA-06 list to assist Sandi and me with Mentoring
until then. We'd like to get some of our more experienced '04 through '00
Parents to sign up to participate in this temporary list. So, if you have
the time to spare and like to WRITE to the lists with answers to questions,
we'd like to hear from you. (No lurkers, please.) Just drop us a note and
we'll subscribe you to the new list. It's always fun helping other really
new parents.

     2. Service Flags & Cloisonne Pins

Our On-Line Store has been a huge success! We've sold 249 USNA MOM pins and
192 Service Pennants as of this writing. Many, many thanks to all who
placed an order. We will begin shipping them out later this week. If you
haven't ordered yet and wanted to, please visit the On-Line Store on the Web
Site and get your order in.

You might be interested to know that our Parents have ordered 39 Two Star
and 15 Three Star Pennants so far. I wasn't aware of that many members with
multiple children and spouses in the military. What an awesome group of
patriots we have among us.

Just another quick note about the Pennants... If you have anyone else among
your friends and relatives who would like a Pennant, be sure to tell them
about our On-Line Store.

Please let your counterparts at the OTHER ACADEMIES know about this fine
American tradition of hanging a Service Pennant in the front window of your
home. If you have access to West Point or Air Force Parents, get the word
out. Send a note to their parents lists, telling them about our On-Line
Store. As you meet them at the All Academy Balls held during the Holidays,
pass on the word. Hanging one of these Pennants in your window is a
wonderful way to remind all of your friends and neighbors that the young boy
or girl who cut their grass or babysat their kids just a few years ago is
now serving to protect their freedom.

     3. Yet another reminder - Prohibited Content.

Just a short reminder to review our Rules of Operation about Goods &/or
Services - Wanted or For Sale. All messages offering or asking for
anything, even favors, are prohibited on all of our lists. An innocent
request for a video tape or ride share or offering Tickets For Sale might
not seem like a big deal but it is. If everyone of our 2,200 members did
this just once each semester, you would find TWELVE requests or offers in
your mailbox EVERY DAY! Our server would have to pump out an additional
9,680,000 emails in a year's time. With that much message overload, our
members would soon tire of all of the JUNK mail in their mailboxes and
simply unsubscribe. Without members, we have no one to Advise and Support.
So please, use the Classified Ads for ALL of this sort of thing and keep our
lists focused on our REAL Mission - Advice and Support of Navy Parents.

     4. Upgrade to AOL 7.0

To our AOL members, you might try upgrading to Version 7.0 when you have the
opportunity. It is a much better version than 6.0 was. In fact, we have
been told by several members that using 7.0 has fixed many problems that
they experienced when they moved up from Version 5.0 to 6.0. While I still
don't think AOL is the way to go, their new 7.0 is a real improvement.

     5. Netscape Navigator & JavaScript

If you are using the latest version of Netscape Navigator to surf the web,
this is very important... The latest version of NN (as it comes "out of the
box") DOES NOT support Java and JavaScripts! Some part of a license
agreement wasn't agreed upon in time for the new Version release. Java and
JavaScripts are used everywhere on the Web. Almost every web site has some
Script to help you during your visit. Most surfers aren't even aware of the
scripts which are embedded in the pages that they visit. Our USNA-Net web
site, for instance, makes pretty heavy use of JavaScripts to run the site
counter, the countdown clocks, to aid you navigation around the site and a
host of other things that just WON'T work with the latest version of
Netscape Navigator unless you download the Java Plug-In from the NN web
site.

So if you use NN and suddenly things that used to work, don't work anymore.
Get the Java Engine (free) from the Netscape web site and install it today.

     6. Club Web Sites hosted for FREE

Remember that USNA-Net provides FREE hosting services for any USNA Parents
Club who either has an existing web site or wishes to set one up. All you
have to do is get in touch with us and tell us who your Webmaster is. We
can take care of everything else. We'll purchase the Domain Name for you
(or move your existing site) and provide all of the hosting services for
your Club's own web site. We won't write it or maintain it. (That's the
Club's responsibility.) But everything else is provided at no charge to
the club, ever.

We now host 14 of the 40 Club web sites across the country. Is you Club (or
a club member) still paying hosting charges or Domain Registration fees
every year? Our members have generously provided funding for our server
and free hosting for ANY parents club that wants to take advantage of it.
No size restrictions, no advertising banners, no hassles. Just free
hosting. Drop us an email today.

In the past several days, a number of our members have OPENED attachments to
email and have been infected with at least one of two or three different
email borne vlruses. There seems to be a lot of it going around right now.
We have received several copies ourselves here at USNA-Net HQ and have
privately notified the senders of their problem.

This is a very serious problem, since once infected, the user's computer
will begin sending out a copy of the infected attachment to EVERYONE in your
address book, friends, relatives, business associates, - everyone.

DO NOT OPEN EMAIL ATTACHMENTS you receive from anyone (even your best
friend) unless you are expecting it and have scanned it for infections
first.

If you didn't hear that when I just said it. Here it is again...

DO NOT OPEN EMAIL ATTACHMENTS YOU RECEIVE FROM ANYONE !

These Trojan w0rms and vlruses can cripple your computer and cost you much
time and expense to rid yourself of the infection.

By the way ... Our server is set to reject any file over a certain (very
small) size and will not forward messages to our lists which contain
attachments of any kind. You can't get an infection from our lists but you
CAN get one from another member with whom you correspond directly. Or even
from your Mid !

Please be careful not to open attachments to email.

To all,

Just so that you know. Sandi and I will be away for the weekend (A/N in
Philly, where else?) beginning this morning through Sunday evening. We will
be taking our laptop and staying connected for those things that need
tending but we would ask that admin requests, changes of address and other
such things wait until Monday, if at all possible.

If you need us, please write. We'll get back to you but just not as quickly
as other times. And remember, there are a whole lot of other parents out
there to answer questions for you all the time.

If you really want to bump into us, we'll be seated in Section 532 Row 2
Seats 8 & 9 from about 0900.

Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the game.

Go Navy - Beat army !!!
