A Word from your Moderators... Sandi and I wish to extend our best wishes
to all of our members for a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Without all of
you there wouldn't be a USNA-Net. We want to thank all of you for your
overwhelming support. Your patience and understanding made the transition
to our new server effortless and your continued participation has insured
that USNA-Net will remain the premier USNA Parent Network for many years to
come.

Happy New Year

This Newsletter is sent to all members of our USNA-Net Listservers. It is
published as often as needed and is intended to provide insight into our
service, answers to Frequently Asked Questions, and Technical Assistance and
Information to our membership.
================================================================

     1. Mid & Member Privacy

Please remember that every time you hit the send button you are sending your
message to as many as 2,200 Families. We want to encourage members to post
but to do so with a bit of extra care when you are mentioning things which
may be embarrassing to either your Mid or other Members. Always assume that
the person you are writing about will read your message, even your Mid's
roommates and classmates. While this is not supposed to happen, assume it
will and you will be much less likely to cause a problem.

Don't mention the last names of any Mids or Members (or identify anyone
other than your own family) and you will never cause any problems. You
might feel it was a cute story to tell 2,200 other families that your Mid's
roommate, John Smith, took a teddy bear back with him this time but I doubt
that he would want to share that info with half of the Brigade. Even casual
references should be considered carefully. We want to a source of caring
advice and support, never an embarrassment to anyone.

        Anonymous Postings

Which brings us to the next topic. How do you write to ask for help when
it's too embarrassing to sign your own name to a message that will appear in
2,200 households? That's where your Moderators can really be of help. Send
the message to either Sandi or myself at our private email addresses
(mzets@USNA-Net.org or jsandi@USNA-Net.org) and we will remove your
identifying information and pass it to the lists anonymously. We can also
post RESPONSES just as anonymously as questions so that everyone may
participate without fear of embarrassment. As always, Sandi and I are sworn
to the utmost secrecy. We've been through most situations, either directly
ourselves or by helping other parents through their problems for almost four
years now. We're here to help and always keep our members' best interests
in mind with everything we do.

     2. ISPs and Message Delivery Problems

Internet Service Providers come and go faster than Pizza at Bancroft. With
the bankruptcy of the @Home organization, many members are faced with
changing ISPs or finding new services. Others are being told that their
provider has been bought by another service and things will be changing.

Most importantly... If you have an interruption in service, find a way to
let us know. Otherwise, if we can't send email to your address, we'll be
forced to remove your name from our lists. Many ISPs impose limits on how
much email can accumulate before they begin rejecting mail with "Mailbox
Full" notices. Lately, these limits are shrinking so you MUST check you
email more often.

Recently, we encountered yet another national ISP (Adelphia.net) who had our
service blocked as a "bulk" mailer or SPAM source. All mail from our server
was dumped and not delivered. We received no notices of non-delivery and
members where left to wonder what happened. It took us a full day to
convince their Tech Support People that we were legitimate and should not be
blocked from their customers. It helped that several users had already
phoned them about this situation. If you suddenly stop receiving mail from
us, get in touch and we'll figure out what the problem is.

     3. Changing Email Addresses &/or Lists

Please keep us informed (PRIVATELY - not on the lists) about any changes in
your email status. Send us a note from your OLD address (if at all
possible) giving us your NAME, Old address and your NEW address. You'd be
surprised how many people forget to tell us who they are when they do this
forcing us to look you up.

Also, if you want to drop or add another list, send us a PRIVATE note
telling us what you want to do. We'll be happy to fix things right away.
If you want to try it yourself by sending a message to majordomo, remember
that it MUST be in plain text and you have to be very careful to spell
everything correctly. It's easier to just drop us a private note. If
you're leaving all together, please don't just drop out. Let us know why
you're leaving so that we might better serve those who remain.

     4. Attachments & Rich Text (HTML) Postings

Okay. One more time... Attachments to email are bad things. They carry
all sorts of evil stuff (see Item #6 below). Sometimes they can't be
avoided but they have no place on our lists. We filter all messages for
length, so attachments won't be passed to our lists even if you attempt to
send one. Likewise, our server doesn't like messages sent with photos,
graphics or stationary embedded inside. Even a very short message of only a
couple of lines can easily become a huge missive if you include a stationary
or background image.

We are in the process of final testing of software that will automatically
filter out all HTML and Rich Text Formatted gobbledy-goop from our email.
Until it is debugged and running, we ask that you avoid stationary and
graphics in your email. Also, attachments are a futile effort.

( PS to AOL Members... Forwarding anything (or including the original
message) will cause AOL to ATTACH the forwarded or quoted message rather
than insert it into your message. Since attachments have been and remain
prohibited, AOL members must be careful about this. Just another reason to
dump AOL and find a low price ($8/month) or free connection to the
Internet.)

     5. New Information in Handbook - BWI Bus Service

We've updated the Parents' Handbook on our web site at www.USNA-Net.org to
include the new bus service available between Annapolis and the BWI airport.
We've put up the schedule and even included a map to help you or your Mid
locate the only pick-up point in Annapolis on Spa Road. One-Way fare is
just $3.00 so this makes this service the least expensive way to get back
and forth between the airport and the Academy.

Look for the information on the Transportation Page in the Parents'
Handbook. We'll be adding detailed instructions to National and Dulles
soon.

     6. Viruses, Worms and Trojans

We continue to have members who accidentally become infected with Viruses
that came to them in some mysterious fashion. Actually, it's almost always
(99.99%) via email attachments but they always swear that "they" didn't open
any attachments. I always ask, "Are you the only family member with access
to the computer???" The best protection is good Anti-Virus Software that is
updated regularly (like EVERY week).

If you want to know more about these things or suspect you have an
infection, go to our www.USNA-net.org web site and look for VIRUSES in the
site index. You will have two choices for information - REAL Viruses and
HOAXES. Read up! The more you know, especially about HOAXES, the better
and safer you will be.

The worst REAL Virus of the bunch is a little ditty about Snow White. It's
will really cause problems with your computer and it attempts to send itself
to EVERYONE in your address book. Our lists are immune but our individual
members who correspond privately are not. (There are currently two members
out there who are infected with this one and are sending out copies of the
virus to all their friends. All we can tell is that they are using ili.net
or att.net as ISPs. See http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=98873)

Every week it seems, a couple of members are caught with a HOAX and end up
damaging their own healthy computers because they believed an email message
that told them to delete a certain file. The sulfnbk.exe HOAX is just
that - a fake. Every Windows computer will have a copy of this file exactly
where this HOAX message tells you to look for it. It's supposed to be
there. Don't delete it. In fact, (except for MY messages) don't believe
anything an email tells you about viruses. Look it up first using our web
site information BEFORE you do anything.

Also, never forward virus messages to anyone. Almost always, those
"warning" messages are hoaxes and fakes and the advice they give (and you
pass on by forwarding) is BAD advice designed to harm those you read it and
get taken in by the fake message.

When in doubt, STOP and ask a trusted computer expert BEFORE you take any
actions. If you're a computer neophyte, don't do anything until you get an
expert opinion.

Again, Happy New Year.

Dear Navy Family and Members of USNA-Net,

I suppose it's time again this year to address our Mission and how our
members perceive us. The "Email TAX" message reminded me that it's about
that time again - Time to understand what USNA-Net is (and what it isn't).

You see, the Email Tax message is a Hoax, as several of our members pointed
out. (Thanks to Paul Neely and Maggie Gentzen for the assist.) But more
than that, it doesn't pertain to Navy Parenting. And didn't belong on our
lists. (My sincerest apology to Steve Doll. This is not intended to be any
sort of public admonishment. It was just a simple misunderstanding.)

As Moderator, I could rant about Rules violations and how it was a forbidden
"call to action" and quote several different Rules that this message
violated but the long and the short of it is that it can all be summed up in
a couple of sentences...

"USNA-Net is an Advice and Support Network for Parents of Midshipmen at
USNA. As such, we are here to provide Advice, Support and Information about
Navy Parenting to fellow parents." Period.

But you say, "The TAX message WAS information." You're right but it wasn't
about Navy Parenting! That's why it doesn't belong on our lists but a note
about the next TV program on Submarine Cooking does. The distinction is
much easier to make if you remember "Navy Parenting."

You see, it's very easy to read all of this email coming in every day from
other USNA parents and to get very comfortable about the service - to think
of fellow list members as extended family and to look forward to every new
name as a new opportunity to make a new friend. And that's all true and
very important to our continued success. We are just one big extended
family.

But... Our Lists not a Chat service to talk about just any old thing. Nor
is it the back gossip fence and we can't use it as such without our inboxes
being flooded with email that doesn't pertain to our Mission. Sooner or
later, members will leave because of the excessive message traffic. And
without members, we won't be of service to anyone!

With as many members as we have (over 2,100) Chat and Fluff can get out of
hand very, very quickly.

It's very important to our continued success as a Parent Network to maintain
our FOCUS on what we do and who we are. So before you hit the send key, ask
yourself, "Does it pertain to Navy Parenting?" If it does, by all means,
SEND IT. If it doesn't or your not sure, send it to your Moderators and ask
about it first. This includes Virus Warnings (even the real ones) and all
sorts of other non-related topics. We're about NAVY PARENTING. As tempting
as it is to use our service to talk about other things, that's not what our
lists are for.

Thanks for listening...

To all,

We have discovered a NEW web camera which has replaced (sort of) the web cam
which formerly overlooked the City Docks in Annapolis. It is being provided
courtesy of the Historic Annapolis Foundation.

It shows the City Docks from a different angle than the last camera but it
will still give you an idea of what the day looks like everyday (and night)
in Annapolis. The view in the day light is better than the image at night.

To view the camera (which is updated with a fresh picture every three
minutes), go to our web site at www.USNA-Net.org and move your mouse over
the "USNA CAM" logo on the right edge of the page. A pop-up window will
appear with the new camera view. The page automatically refreshes to insure
you have a current view in the window.

Enjoy.

To all...

A few things of note. There was a write up on the CNN web site about Blue
Star Pennants that I thought might be of interest to our members. Remember
that your Sons and Daughters are considered to be on Active Duty in the
Navy. All of our members qualify to display one of these Pennants either on
their front door or in a front window to show your pride in having a Son or
Daughter serving in the Military. Let your neighbors and friends know.
Your can read the article at...

http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/01/18/blue.stars.ap/index.html

If you want a flag to display, remember that they are available to all
(members and non-members alike), at our On-Line Store on our Web Site along
with USNA Mom Pins. Just go to our Web Site at www.USNA-Net.org and Click
on the On-line Store graphic in the upper right of the main page just under
the Plebe Corner Link.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Also, we receive notices for each undelivered email. So when your email box
fills up because you haven't checked your mail for a LONG time, we begin
getting notices that you aren't getting your mail. If we get too many of
these, we have no way to tell you to read your mail and our only recourse is
to remove you from our lists. This is especially true of Hotmail and Yahoo
accounts. Please make an effort to read your email at least once or twice a
week to save us some extra trouble and to guarantee your continued
subscription.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Remember that if you are receiving email at home, you can't send email to
our lists from work or vice versa. You MUST send email to our lists FROM
the same email address at which you receive email. If you send mail from
another address it will bounce and your Moderators will have to forward it
on.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Lastly, PLEASE try to remember to sign your email with your name, general
location and Mids first name, Class and Company like so...

    Mike Zets
    Westlake OH
    Ensign Michael Stoker ('00/10)

In this way, we will all benefit from knowing who you are and about where
you live. It helps to bring us together as a group, allowing those who live
close to know about that and those with Mids in the same Company to find
each other.

Again, check out our On-Line Store and the Blue Star Flags. They're a great
way to show your pride to all your neighbors and visitors.

A special message from your Moderators...

To all...

It is with great excitement that I have the pleasure of announcing to all of
our members that our lists are now operating with one less problem. Through
the Herculean efforts of a fellow parent (Richard Albrecht of Urbana,
Illinois. - Meredith '04), we now have a special filter in full operation
which will strip ALL Rich Text Formatting and ALL attachments from all list
messages automatically.

What does that mean? It means that all of our members (including our AOL
members) may now send mail to our lists without a single care about how it
is formatted, or whether is being sent as an attachment or anything. Our
custom installed software will strip out all the bad stuff and send your
message to the lists in the correct Plain Text Format.

AOL 6.0 members can send messages without doing anything special. Our
Hotmail and Yahoo members can send mail without worry about attachments or
any other problems.

All messages will now be signed automatically with the appropriate signature
line so there will never be any unsigned messages again.

And BEST of all... Our Archives and Digest versions will never again
contain any gobbledy-goop and strange characters. Every message, every
Digest and every Archive will all be 100% readable from now on.

For more than a year before our move last September, we begged the owners of
our old server to acknowledge that Rich Text was a problem and to find a way
to fix it. We knew it could be done and now, USNA-Net has done it for OUR
members. Imagine clear, readable messages and archives all the time. It's
just one more thing that the move to our own server has allowed US to do for
OUR members. After all, you, our members, are what really matter to us. We
are Parents Helping Parents.

Thanks again to Richard for the hours and hours he put into this project
getting it perfect. We all owe him a huge thank you.

Go Navy - Beat Army !

A special message from your Moderators...

To all...

We have posted all of the Service Assignments for the Class of 2002, sorted
by Last Name, Company and by Service Community, on our web site.

To view this detailed listing, go to www.USWNA-Net.org and click on the
Graphic Link in the middle of the Right Side of the main page.

When the listing opens up, you will find three tabs at the bottom of the
page which will allow you to display the names sorted in any of three
different ways.

We converted the lists into real web pages instead of making them PDF files
which so many of our members have trouble opening. You should have no
problems with these pages if you are patient.

We thought you'd all like to look at where all 979 members of the Class of
2002 will be starting their Military careers.

Enjoy.

TECH NOTE - Cache and Your Browser.
Why you don't see what others see on a web site.
=============================================

Years ago when computer modems were slooooow and DSL and cable modems were
hugely expensive toys of corporate MIS departments, the designers of Browser
Software for personal computers decided to cheat to help speed things up to
the average user. They used an old computer concept call "cache." Since
web pages (especially those with graphic images) take a long time to load,
it was decided that every time you go to a page that you've never visited
before, your computer would store the entire page and all of the graphics
and music - everything - on your computer's hard drive in Temporary Files
which are collectively called cache.

Then, when you re-visited that page later that day or tomorrow, instead of
downloading the page across your pokey slow modem again, your computer would
look in its cache and if the page was there, it would simply display it from
your hard drive. Zooooooom !!! Fast pages and happy customers for people
who bought Browser Software.

There's a problem with this cache system. Web sites change from time to
time. If the page you visited yesterday changed everything on the page
today and you were still pulling up the page from your hard drive, you'd
never notice that the page had changed. You would never see the NEW page.
You can get around this problem by forcing the computer to download NEW
content (even if it hasn't changed) rather than using the cached pages in
several different ways.

You can set your browser's "options" or "preferences" to check for newer
versions of stored pages at certain intervals like: "Every visit to the
page"; "Every time you start the Browser"; "Automatically "or "Never.'"
(These are the choices I have using MS Internet Explorer under Tools >
Internet Options > General > Temporary Internet Files > Settings). In some
cases your Browser software may have been set to "Never." If that's the
case, you'll never see updated web pages unless your force a manual refresh"
or "reload."

To manually force the browser to look for the latest page content, you have
to "refresh" or "reload" the page. To do this, look at the top of your
browser's screen (this even works for AOL and Mac users) for a curled arrow
button next to the "Back," "Forward" and "Stop" buttons. It will be labeled
"Refresh" or "Reload." Click it and the page will be reloaded from the web
rather than from your computer's cache. This will display the page with its
most current text and graphics.

So if you were having trouble finding a link called "Class of '02 Service
Selections" on the right edge of the main page of our www.USNA-Net.org web
site, just refresh your browser and Viola' - the latest look.

Hope this helps.

A special message from your Moderators...

To all,

Our server stopped an attempt to publish a V1RUS called "My Party" and, just
as it was supposed to, it stripped the attachment which contained the V1RUS.

It did not however stop the carrier message which came through to the list.
This "carrier" message is harmless BUT at the bottom of the message, there
was a note that gave the name of the attachment which was removed.

For more information go to...

www.myparty.yahoo.com

If you receive this same sort of Party Message from anyone else, along with
the attachment, DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT! You will be infected.

A special message from your Moderators...

To all USNA-Net Members...

Yesterday was a particularly busy day on USNA-Net. We had a run on V1RUS
attempts on our system. There are still at least three of our members who
are infected with the HaHaHaSexyFunny W32/Hybris.gen@MM V1RUS which comes in
a message about Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. (This particular V1RUS
disguises the senders address so we can't identify exactly who is infected
and warn them.)

But the big news of the day was the new W32/MyParty@MM V1RUS which is
described at the end of this email. It is a small V1RUS that is contained
in an email attachment (99% of these V1RUSES are hidden in email
attachments) and, once you open the attachment, you're infected. Period.
Your computer then sends a copy of the V1RUS to everyone in your address
book. This V1RUS is spreading VERY quickly. Over the past 24 hours, Sandi
and I have received at least a dozen copies of this V1RUS from various
members who have us in their address book. (So much for being "popular"
with the membership.)

We wanted to remind you again to NOT OPEN ATTACHMENTS that come with email
from friends and/or relatives. No one had a party and no one is sending you
photos to print.

Now a word on why you DIDN'T GET THIS V1RUS FROM USNA-NET.... Our NEW
server stops V1RUSES cold. Last September, if you remember, we moved our
operation to our very own server and left WP-ORG who had been hosting our
service.

This move enabled us to implement a host of new features on our Mailing
Lists and our Web Site. Among them is the ability to FILTER ALL INCOMING
MESSAGES and remove nasty stuff like, HTML Formatted Email Text and
Attachments from the message traffic BEFORE they are sent to our members.
Before we moved to our own server and the NEW lists, we could only stop
large attachments (over 40,000 bytes). That would NOT have stopped this new
V1RUS. It's a tiny package of only 25,088 bytes.

If we were still using the old WP-ORG server, this new MyParty V1RUS would
have been sent to every member of our lists. As far as we know, the
situation on the WP-ORG server has not changed, protection from small V1RUS
attachments has not been implemented, because their Alumni members insist on
being able to send photos as attachments and have therefore left their
attachment size limitation at 40,000 bytes. Every one of their lists
(Alumni and all of their Parents' Lists) are still at risk to this new
V1RUS. While we were still there last summer, we tried very hard to
convince WP-ORG to change their attachment policy but they refused. It was
just one more reason that we left their server and all of that unnecessary
risk behind.

In any event, the only way YOU are going to catch a V1RUS is if YOU aren't
careful with attachments received from others. You won't receive ANY
attachments from USNA-Net, it's impossible, regardless of size. We even
examine our regular email automatically for certain words and phrases to
prevent some other messages from being sent to our lists. That is why the
word V1RUS is spelled with a 1 instead of an i. Our filters won't allow a
message (even from your Moderator) to be sent to the lists which contains
the properly spelled word. All of this is done automatically for your
protection and the safe and operation of our lists.

What can you do? Make sure that you have Anti-V1RUS software installed on
your computer and that you have UP-TO-DATE DATA FILES for it to use. Also,
if you've moved up to a Cable Modem or DSL connection from the old dial-up
modem, be sure to install a FIREWALL to protect your computer from hackers.
It's become a fact of life. You need protection. Not from USNA-Net but
from other individuals. With V1RUSES, it's not a matter of IF - only a
matter of WHEN. Without protection, you could lose everything.

Best regards,

Mike Zets
