To all,

This evening I feel it is necessary to address a problem that has arisen
among our list members about a member and her treatment by your Moderators.
If you have not heard about this situation, then Sandi and I wish to
apologize for taking up your time with this message.  To Wendy Neptun, we
wish to extend our sincerest apologies for bringing this matter to the
attention of the entire membership without first obtaining your permission
but as your Moderators we feel it is necessary.

A number of our members (some of whom have already resigned from this
service) have been grossly misinformed concerning the facts surrounding
Wendy Neptun and her membership in USNA-Net.  Please allow me to present the
other side of this matter before it gets further out of hand.

As most of your know, Wendy Neptun's son, Ken, has been diagnosed with
leukemia and is currently undergoing chemotherapy with the possibility of a
Bone Marrow Transplant in the near future.  His plight was brought to our
lists in early November by a member who knew of the problem.  Shortly
thereafter, Wendy joined our lists.  She has posted several notes and
progress reports to both our Family and Prayer lists.   Sandi and I have
attempted to be totally supportive of Wendy in all of this time.

When it became obvious that Ken would not be returning to the Brigade
following Christmas leave, we felt that we should do something to protect
Wendy in the coming months as Ken's classmates and their families prepared
for Service Assignments, Ship Selections, and ultimately , for Commissioning
and all of its attendant festivities.  Surely, the daily messages about what
to wear to Garden Parties, where to meet after the Hat Toss and who should
pin on the Shoulder Boards by Parents of Classmates would do nothing but
cause her further pain and suffering as it became increasingly apparent that
Ken would not be completing his Academics with his '02 Classmates as
previously scheduled.  We made a decision, out of kindness and concern, to
remove Wendy from our lists until Ken's situation was better known.  Here is
a portion of the message we wrote to her at that time...

"I would like to assure you that you have our most sincere and heartfelt
concern for Ken's illness and our constant prayers for his recovery.  Our
USNA-Prayer list members have both of you in our daily thoughts and prayers.
Our USNA-Family list members have all been told of Ken's plight and his need
for a matching bone marrow donor.  They have been reminded of how to be
screened and many of them have (Sandi being one of them.)  We have done
everything allowable within our Rules of Operation to aid your family in its
time of need.

We all hope that Ken's recovery is quick and that he may rejoin the Brigade
soon.  At that time we will gladly reinstate your full membership in our
lists.  Until then, however, we are concerned that the daily reminders of
the upcoming Commissioning festivities and the discussions of our members
about the future plans of your son's classmates may become an unnecessary
emotional burden for you.  Sandi and I can never know how you feel, nor how
much pain you have had to bear over your son's illness.  We do know that you
are a remarkable and strong woman who is doing what any of us would do under
the circumstances - everything possible to help your child.  Please realize
that we have the utmost respect and concern for your feelings and for your
dedication to your son.  Our intention is not to place any additional burden
on you.  We hope that our mailings to you have not come across as cold or
uncaring - and that you do not feel that we have criticized or berated you.
That was NEVER our intention.

If there are things you wish to convey to our lists, we will be happy to act
as go-betweens in the interim.  Our Prayers are with both of you.

For what ever reason, Wendy's friends heard only that we "threw Wendy off th
e lists."  This raised a furor among them but NOTHING could be further from
the truth.  In fact, when we were told that Ken is still considered to be a
member of the Brigade and that Wendy enjoyed and looked forward to the
messages from our lists, we reinstated her membership.  All of this seems to
have been lost in the translation among a small circle of her friends and
supporters.  We always felt that we (Sandi and I) were among that group.
Sandi even donated blood and registered  with the National Bone Marrow Donor
Registry on Ken's behalf in early November.  I would have as well but two
heart attacks in 12 months have me taking too much medication to be
considered for donation at this time.

As I said, her dedicated supporters have only been told one side of the
episode and that has come from other very emotional friends who also have
only a handful of facts.  We have never intended to hurt Mrs. Neptun.  All
of our actions were motivated by care and concern for her and her family.
We have been and continue to be as compassionate as possible.  We have
allowed her to post whatever news and reports as she saw fit while she was a
member.   Even after we removed her, we continued to relay her messages to
our Prayer list.

Please understand that Sandi and I would never have committed the atrocities
of which we seem to have been judged and found guilty by a few of Wendy's
supporters.  I'm not sure why these otherwise caring and compassionate
people have decided to strike out in such a fashion but I cannot allow their
statements to go unchallenged.  We have been deeply hurt by the absolutely
vicious and mean spirited things that three of Wendy's supporters have slung
at us yesterday and today.  We have been accused of being heartless, mean,
vicious, spiteful and even purveyors of pornography.   These groundless
insults have hurt more than any of those members may ever know.

Again, I wish to apologize to Wendy Neptun for any additional pain or
suffering that has arisen from her membership in our list.  Our Mission at
USNA-Net is to facilitate Parents in Helping other Parents.  If we fell
short of that goal, we did so only out of concern for her as one of our
members.

Now...  Please let us put all of this behind us and move on to other
important matters.  There is more help to be shared, more advice to be
offered and definitely more support to be given without these sorts of
misunderstanding coming between friends and fellow Parents.

It is not my intention for this matter to become a topic of discussion on
our lists.  It was presented here simply so that the matter could be cleared
up and put behind us once and for all.

To all,

It can't possibly be that time again but it is!  We have '06 Parents
arriving and requesting to be enrolled in our USNA-Net service already.
They are receiving their Appointment letters and are anxious to find out
everything there is to know about being a USNA Parent.

So, in order to give these "early arrivals" the benefit of the finest Navy
Parenting Network on the Internet, we have initiated yet another new service
just for them.  We have formed a new list called USNA-06.  From those
members who responded to our earlier request, we recruited experienced
Upper-class Parents to act as Mentors and enrolled all of these new '06
parents on the USNA-06 list earlier today.  As more and more of them join
our organization, they will be able to interact with each other and receive
the benefit of our volunteer Mentors on their very own list.  If you meant
to volunteer to be one of our active '06 List Mentors and didn't, now is the
time.

Later when there are more '06 Parents (there are quite a few already!) and
some of the really newbie questions are out of the way, (remember the briefs
versus boxer questions?), all of these new '06 members will be automatically
transferred into our main lists.  In this way, our Plebe list can remain
exclusively the territory of our '05 Parents and their Mentors for a little
while longer and we can address the special needs and the really "newbie"
questions of the incoming '06 Parents on their own list.

Now for why you should want to know about all this...

HELP US MAKE SURE EVERY '06 PARENT KNOWS ABOUT USNA-NET AND JOINS US BEFORE
I-DAY !

There are over 2,100 of us on USNA-Net and each and every one knows the
tremendous benefit we have received from being a member of this Parents
Network.  It's up to each of us to make sure that all of the '06 Parents who
we meet in the coming months at various Club events hear about USNA-Net and
join our Navy family.  Our members are our best resource and our surest way
to reach all of the new parents who will be needing our friendship, advice
and support in the next four years.

Thank you all for your generous offers to Mentor our incoming '06 Parents.  We
have been overwhelmed by your collective willingness to volunteer.

If you haven't heard back by now that you have been added to the list, we will
be passing for the moment.  Most of you who did volunteer are also members of
our USNA-Plebe list and will be able to interact and Mentor our new parents when
they join that list and the USNA-Family list later this Spring, well before
I-Day.  There will still be lots to help with and much hard earned experience
and advice to be shared.

What you CAN do in the meantime is make sure every '06 parent knows about
USNA-Net and what a wonderful and helpful group of parents we are.  After all,
2,100 Families can't be wrong.

Make sure that they visit our web site at www.USNA-Net.org and sign up for
membership.  The sooner they come on board, the more we will be able to help
them.  After all, how many of our members will say something like, "I wish I had
found USNA-Net before I did."  It's your job as current members to make sure
that there aren't ANY parents who will make that lament this year.

Our goal for the Class of 2006 is to reach EVERY Parent and invite them to join
our Navy Family.  We can do it if each of you just contacts only one or two
other families.  When you already have 2,100 Families enrolled, it's easy to
reach 1,150 Plebe Families from the Class of 2006.  But we can't do it without
YOUR help.

A quick note about our Web site.  Like and artist and an oil painting, a web
site is NEVER finished.  I keep puttering around making things easier to use and
easier to find.  Here are a few things that Sandi and I have done recently to
make things better on the web site...

Font Sizes have been Fixed.  (No they weren't broken but they were subject to
floating from very tiny to really huge depending upon how YOU, the visitor, had
your browser set up.)  With soooo much information stuffed onto our site, we set
the font size so that it is virtually identical for all visitors regardless of
their browser settings.  Now things won't force scroll bars where we didn't want
them.  Not all of the pages are done but we're working on them.  With as much
stuff as we have on the site, it will be a while but, for now, the main pages
are finished.

The Annapolis Web Cam now operates in it's own Pop-Up window complete with the
Weather Icon so that you can leave the small window up on your desktop with a
constant view of Downtown Annapolis even while you're doing other things all day
long at the office.  You can even close your browser (just don't disconnect from
the Internet) and have a peek anytime at what life is like in Annapolis.  To get
the Pop-Up window to display, just hover your mouse over the "USNA-CAM" icon on
the main page.

Another "hidden" feature (Geeks call these hidden features Easter Eggs) is
located near the bottom of the Main Menu.  Click on the words "Membership
Numbers" to reveal a GRAPH of our list numbers.  We though that actually seeing
our list numbers as a bar graph might really empathize just how many members we
have currently enrolled.  There are 2,153 Families currently subscribed to one
or more of our many lists.  We continue to receive new '06 members daily.
Remember, if you want to do your part, find an '06 Parent and make sure that
they sign up NOW.  Don't let them procrastinate.  Everyday we're sharing more
and more information that is helpful NOW!

If you will be attending a Club function and want to take along a few of our
USNA-Net business cards, you can print them out right from your own printer by
going to the bottom of the main page on our web site and clicking on "Please
help us to help other parents...   Click here to find out how."  You will get
several options on printing full color business cards to pass out to all the new
parents as you meet them.  The cards are meant to be cut out and folded in half
because they are two sided.  You can then write your own name and phone number
inside so that the new parents will be able to get even more help by calling you
when they have questions.   Even without the business cards, we're easy to
remember.  Our name is our web address...  USNA-Net is www.USNA-Net.org

Our web site remains a very popular place on the Internet.  We will probably
have our 350,000 individual visitor later today or early tomorrow.  The counter
in the lower left corner of the main page records each separate visitor since we
put the counter in operation on 9 March 1999.  That's just 27 days short of
three years of operation and an average of almost 330 hits every single day for
that entire time.  If you go back over just the past year, we have averaged 481
visits every day since 2/10/01! Looks like we have a very useful and informative
web site.

You can even find us by entering in www.USNA.org   It's that simple.  Try it
today.

To all,

>From time to time, one of you will write in about how some stranger helped
your Mid.  It might be having your Mid's dinner paid for by a nameless
stranger who instructed the waiter to simply say, "Thank you."  It might
simply be a stranger stopping your Mid to tell her how grateful they are for
her willingness to serve.  We all have a story (or will have one) and it's
gratifying to know that there are people out there who respect and admire
our sons and daughters so much for what they are doing.

Two years ago, someone mailed me a photocopy of a faded magazine article. It
was a story of young love and of a group of complete strangers who decided
to say "Thank you" to a Midshipman and his date a long time ago.

It is the story of a young and innocent Midshipman, eager to impress the
girl of his dreams and how perfect strangers made that happen.  Now, two
days before Valentine's Day is the perfect time to share this with you.

I hope you find this lovely story - told thirty years later by a Rear
Admiral and his wife -  touches you as it did me.

     1.    Email - What it is and how it works.

Email is a fascinating and very useful tool that has become a big part of our
lives, especially if we need it to communicate with our sons and daughters at
the Academy or later, in the Fleet.  Yet, a good number of our members are new
to email and hopefully this issue of TECH NOTES will enlighten all of you about
this vital link between us all.

When you finish typing up a note and hit the send key in your email program, a
lot of things happen, sometimes in the blink of an eye, other times over several
days.  Here's the process...

    a.)    Your outbound message is translated into one or more groups of bytes
of hexadecimal code called packets.  Each packet is individually addressed and
sent out into cyberspace over your connection to the Internet.  The email
address on each packet is the same plus a little info about what part of the
message is in the packet so that the individual packets can be re-assembled at
the other end in the correct order.

    b.) The first computer to receive your outbound message packet will be your
own Internet Service Provider.  They will read the Domain Portion (follows the @
symbol) of the address and translate that to an IP address like 161.58.194.6
which is our IP address at USNA-Net.org.  This computer then looks up where that
IP address is located on the Internet and forwards it to another computer which
handles traffic going to that computer or to one of the Backbone transfer
systems which will move the packet along toward its final destination.

    c.) Each packet may make several stops along the way and is finally reunited
with the other packets which make up your message at the final destination
computer where it is reassembled and placed into the addressee's Inbox where it
waits for that person to download it to his/her computer and finally open it and
read it. (STOPS?  Did he say Stops?  Absolutely.  Every time a packet hits
another server enroute, it is written to that computer's Storage - even if only
temporarily.  During any one of those stops it may be read by the computer.
That's why it is never safe to send critical or sensitive information via email
without high level encryption or over Secure Socket Layer (SSL) systems such as
we use on our On-Line Store.)

If anyone of those computers does not read or write a packet properly or the
system is busy or a computer in the multiple paths that multiple packets take is
busy or shut down or in some way out of service, one of several things may
happen.
    1.)    The system retries periodically for anywhere from several minutes to
several days and sends you a message that the message couldn't be delivered
immediately and the system will keep trying.  OR
    2.)    The system has tried for several days and is still unable to deliver
the message and finally gives up.  In this case you get a message saying that
your message couldn't be delivered and you should try sending it again.  OR
    3.)    The destination server (the addressee's Internet Service Provider)
decides that the email is either Junk Mail or SPAM (Unsolicited Email) and
throws it away.  You or the addressee may or MAY NOT receive notification of the
deletion.  OR
    4.)    Something else happens to one of more of the packets and the message
is lost forever in the system without anyone ever knowing or being notified that
there was a problem.

Most of the time (99.999% of the time) your email message goes straight through
in a matter of a few seconds, makes all of the skips and hops and arrives
without incident.  Once in a great while it doesn't.  But what you have to
remember here is that email is NOT like using the telephone.  Sometimes things
do go wrong.  Sometimes things take days to arrive rather than seconds.  Never
assume that your message got to the intended party.  It might be lost forever in
cyberspace.

Another thing about email speed is that even very fast computers, like our
server, take time to send out a lot of email.  When you send a note to our
lists, it's easy to forget just how many individual messages are really being
sent.  At the rate of one message every second, it would take 35 minutes to send
out 2,100 email messages to our Family list.  Now add to that the delay
introduced by several of the intermediate stops along the way and any delay at
the destination computer which might only look for new mail every 15 or 30
minutes (You set this on your own computer) and you can see where it might take
a while for YOUR message to our lists to be delivered back to you.  At peak
usage times, 1 to 2 hours between sending and receiving is not unusual.
Remember too, that our server sends our message traffic in alphabetical order by
Mid Last Name.

     2.    Do's and Don'ts

A good email is like a good letter.  Each is well written, checked for errors
and says exactly what the writer intended, no more, no less.  So here are a few
guideline to apply everyday, not just with email to our lists.

    Do's...
    -    Always SIGN your letters with your full REAL name.  Never assume that
the person reading the letter will know who "bill125@hotmail.com" is.  Some
email programs will supply a full name in place of an email address in the FROM
line but only if you tell it to and set it up that way in the first place.  If a
husband and wife share an email address, how is the reader supposed to know if
it is from Bill or Mary if the email address is "billmary@aol.com" ?
    -    Write the way to speak.
    -    Use proper punctuation.
    -    Use your SPELL CHECKER!  Most of us can't spell well enough or type a
little too carelessly to not use a spell checker on everything we send out.
    -    Re-read your email before you send it to make sure that you said WHAT
YOU MEANT.  It is very easy for the written word to be misread or misinterpreted
on the other end.  Never assume that your words will be read with a hint of
humor or interpreted as "joking" unless you make that very clear.

    Don'ts...
    -    DON'T TYPE AN ENTIRE MESSAGE IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS.  It may be faster
but is much harder to read and is considered to be the email equivalent of
SHOUTING!  Very poor style.
    -    Don't make the entire email one long paragraph.  Break it up every two
or three sentences to make the message much more readable.
    -    NEVER send an email to your entire address book.  (More on the dangers
of this later...)
    -    Don't automatically forward a VIRUS warning or chain letter to others
unless you've checked it out and it is NOT a hoax.
    -    Don't attach large photos or documents to your email unless you know
the person is capable of receiving them.  Some members (like AOL subscribers)
have size limits on attachments and will not receive them at all.  Others still
use Dial Up modems and a 4MB zip file will take over a half hour to download,
locking up the recipient's computer for that entire time.
    -    Don't use email as a substitute for a hand written "Thank You" Note
which should be sent via US Mail.
    -    Remember that an email sent to Mary Smith may be read by others in her
family: her husband, her son, even her 10 year old daughter.  While email sent
to me comes to "my" computer and email sent to Sandi goes to "her" computer,
this private setup with totally separate computers on a small network isn't the
usual setup.  Most people share computers with other family members and if you
don't want others to read what you wrote, don't write it in the first place.
    -    Don't read things INTO email that the author didn't intend, either.
Always take a minute and assume that the author didn't mean to offend or say
something the wrong way.  Most of the time, they didn't.

     3.    SPAM & How to avoid it.

SPAM is unsolicited email.  Some people include the word Commercial in the
definition but basically, I define it as electronic Junk Mail.  You don't want
it.  It still seems to arrive no matter what you do.  Here are a few tips on how
to avoid most of it.

    -    Use a quality Internet Service Provider (ISP).  Most quality ISPs have
spam filters set up on their servers to prevent the worst of it from ever
getting to you.
    -    Never give your email address to any On-Line service who doesn't have a
strict Privacy Policy and that you know will honor your privacy by never
divulging your address to others.
    -    If you need to give out an email address in order to visit certain web
sites or use certain Internet facilities, obtain a FREE Hotmail or Yahoo email
address and use IT instead of your "real" address.  If there gets to be too much
SPAM coming to that account, dump it and get another one.
    -    Get separate addresses for everyone in the family, especially the
children, and force everyone to use their own email address instead of yours.
It will keep a lot of SPAM out of "your" inbox.
    -    NEVER RESPOND TO SPAM!  Just delete it.  Never send back an email
asking to be removed from their mailing list.  Most Spammers send out mail to
every conceivable email address at a Domain.  Computers are great at generating
lists of email addresses in sequential order regardless of whether or not there
is actually anyone who uses that address.  It is only when YOU decide to write
back in response to their SPAM that they know that there really is such an
address and that it has a real person at the other end.  It works like those
telephone solicitors who have a computer dialing EVERY number in order until
they get you on the line to sell something to.  If you respond to a SPAM, you
will be guaranteed to be placed on every email list that company has and they
will sell that list to everyone they can.  A list with REAL names on it is the
holy grail of email marketing.
    -    If you get really offensive stuff and feel you MUST do something,
forward the actual SPAM email to "abuse@-------.com' where you put the domain
name of the spammer in place of the ----- in the address.  This only works with
the more reputable domains and ISPs like MSN, AOL etc. Never send one of these
to a domain that ends in a country code like .tv or .cz or .cc, etc.  These are
offshore ISPs and can't be trusted to fix the problem for you or take you
complaint seriously.

This next one is sooooo important it should have it's own email...

    -    DON'T EVER SEND A MESSAGE TO YOUR ENTIRE ADDRESS BOOK !!!  Again...
Don't ever send a message to your entire address book.  Not ever.  NO NEVER!
Here's why....

A lot of you have your email program set up to automatically ADD everyone to
whom you send email directly into your address book.  It makes life simple and
is a wonderful feature which will keep Uncle Fred's address right there where
you can find it again a year later.   BUT that same feature will also ADD the
address of the SPAMMERS to your address book, if you ever send them back a note
that says "Remove me from your list."  Yep.  It puts the Spammer right there
next to Uncle Fred in your address book - automatically.

Then...  You send a well intended patriotic or religious email to everyone in
your address book.  It has everyone's address right there in the TO line for
everyone to see, INCLUDING EVERY SPAMMER YOU EVER ASKED TO REMOVE YOU!    You
not only sent them YOUR address in this note, you sent them every address you
have in your address book.  How wonderful!  Now everyone you've ever written to
is on that Spammer's list, thanks to you.

So, two things.
  1.)    Don't automatically add every email address to your address book and
NEVER send a single message to everyone in your address book.  Look through it
every so often and if you can't remember who the address belongs to, delete it.
    2.)    Learn to send out BCCs (Blind Carbon Copies) instead to large groups.
It will still get to everyone but no one in the address line will know (or be
able to find out) the address of anyone else to whom the message was sent.

     4.    Web Based Email

Some of you already use Web Based Email like Hotmail or Yahoo.  It's a great way
to send and receive email if you travel or don't always have access to your home
computer and want to read and send email anyway.  I have several accounts and
use them often but for "special" things, not my really important email. Why is
that?  Because, first and foremost, these services are NOT reliable.  Since the
first of the year, Hotmail has failed to deliver a total 640 individual messages
to our members who use that service.  That's a lot of missing messages in only
seven weeks that just plain ol' didn't get to the members who should have
received them.  Yahoo did a little better.  They didn't deliver only 258
individual messages since January 1st.

So there are a trade offs for the convenience of web based email.  First, there
is the lack of reliability.  Next, there is the issue of limited storage space.
Most of these services (the FREE ones) limit a user to 2MB of storage.  That's a
lot of storage if you're talking about text but not much at all if you also get
photos and graphics along with your mail.  "Pretty" email with bold and special
fonts often add stationary and backgrounds which quickly eat up your allowed
storage space.  If you don't want to have to retrieve your email every day,
these services are definitely not for you.  Remember too, that it is not enough
to read the mail that comes to your web based email account.  You must actually
DELETE the messages after you're read them AND remember to empty your Trash or
Delete Folder often.  Otherwise the messages are still "in your account" and
will continue to take up storage space.

The best use for these accounts is to be used as an email address you can use
On-Line and throw away if it starts to accumulate too much SPAM.  I would never
recommend one of these accounts as your primary email address.  If you let the
account fill up with junk mail and don't delete the old mail, there will be no
room in your file for ANY new messages.  They will all be rejected and returned
to sender as undeliverable, no matter who sent them.  Not what I want from an
email account.

     5.    Rich Text & Attachments

Rich Text Formatted email was a big problem for our old server.  You've all seen
what it looks like.  Here's a very short sample...

Well, when we moved to our new server in September, we left all of that behind.
We no longer have to worry about Rich Text Formatted (HTML based) email.  You
can send in anything you want and our server software will strip all of that
extra stuff out of it.  It even strips all Attachments and images/graphics from
incoming email BEFORE it is relayed to our lists.

Now all of our lists' email have the appropriate Footers and our listservers can
attach the short signature line to the bottom of each message to identify the
email address of the author.  But the very best part of this is that we are no
longer plagued by attachments on the lists.  By now most of you (should) know
that a lot of very nasty things come into your computer via Email Attachments.
This is important to our AOL members who might have forgotten and forwarded
something to our lists.  When an AOL subscriber forwards something, it comes as
an attachment.  AOL version 6.0 users couldn't send email before this because it
was all sent in RTF.  No more.  OUR server get rid of all that extra stuff for
our members automatically and everyone of our members can send what they want
and our software will fix it for them.

Since our server strips all attachments before they can be transmitted to our
membership, we stop viruses, worms and trojans in their tracks.  You will NEVER
get a virus through email that comes from OUR server.  While other email
services can't strip out the RTF content and attempt to prevent attachments by
limiting total file size to about 19.5K (20,000 bytes),  this isn't small enough
for the latest viruses which can be a small as 12Kb. OUR servers provide the
most protection available today.

These are all little things that happen in the background where no one really
sees it happening but they are important things if you want to operate a Quality
Listserver and be responsible about how it works and how safely it operates.  We
take this stuff very seriously.

     6.    V1RUSES, Worms & Trojans

Lastly, this Email Extravaganza wouldn't be complete if we didn't take the time
to address Viruses in email.  (No.  You don't have to worry about getting them
from our lists BUT you should still be very aware that you CAN get them very
easily via regular email from just about anyone else.)

Viruses, Worms and Trojans are all forms of little mini programs that almost
always come attached to an email.  It might be from someone you know.  It might
be from a stranger.  But once you open the attachment (in an attempt to read it
or view it), the little program will run itself and that's all it takes.  Most
of these little programs cause some sort of damage to YOUR computer but before
they do, they send themselves out to any address they can find in your address
book.

What is your best protection?  A good, up-to-date AntiVirus program.  McAfee and
Norton are the top two.  Get one that automatically scans everything that comes
down from the Internet and that automatically updates itself with the latest
Data files so that you are assured that you have the maximum protection
available all the time.  Out of date software is worse than no protection at all
since you "think" you're protected but you're not.  A false sense of security is
no security at all.

There is one more thing you can do that will help immensely.  Don't open email
attachments that come to you unannounced no matter WHO they come from.  An
infected computer sends out copies of the virus that infected it WITHOUT the
knowledge of the computer owner.  So if your Mid gets a virus today, his/her
computer will probably send you a copy of the virus almost immediately.  So
unless he/she has said that there are pictures attached, don't open that
unannounced attachment.  If the attachment's file name has TWO suffixes like
Humor.TXT.pif or s3msong.MP3.pif OR if it's file name ends in .com or .exe or
.pif or .scr you can almost guarantee that it is a virus infected attachment.

Be safe.  Get, install and USE a good AV program.  They only cost about $50 -
$60 and can save your expensive computer from total disaster.

I've been having fun again...  :>)

I have created three original wallpapers and added eight more whose images I
adapted from the Official Navy website Photo Gallery.

(When you have a some spare time, you might want to take a look at some of
the incredible photos that the Navy has to offer on their website!  You
won't be disappointed by the variety and beauty of these shots.  I look
every so often, hoping to see my son's ship, or the ship's of other grad
Mids I know about!!  Regardless of your Mid's destination - whether it be
flight, subs, surface, marines... there will be images for you to enjoy, and
maybe even download.)

Now, to the images I have added to the USNA-Net Wallpaper page.

First, under "Patriotic Wallpaper" at the bottom of the page (found on the
Navy site). On September 23, 2001 more than 250 sailors assigned to the
Great Lakes Naval Training Center were on hand at Soldier Field for the
resumption of the National Football League schedule after the 9/11 tragedy.
They unfurled a huge US flag during the opening ceremonies.  The flag, said
to be one of the largest in the nation, travels to various events throughout
the country.  This shot is a real "Wow" and I thought you might like to see
it on your desktop!

Next, under "Marine Corps Wallpaper."  I found this one on the Navy site and
it shows a AH1W Super Cobra helicopter flying above Marines on a Light
Armored Vehicle (LAV) as they start on patrol near Kandahar, Afghanistan.  I
added the Globe and Anchor (with my own Semper Fi text) in the bottom
corner.  I loved the look of this shot.  Those of you with Mids who have
gone, or are leaning toward, Marines might find this one a good wallpaper.

Next, under "Navy Wallpaper"  Five new images.  One of a recent missile shot
(great image); one of a helicopter landing with slightly rough seas and a
Destroyer in the near background; two more are spectacular sunset shots of
jets onboard an aircraft carrier (you have to see these to believe the "take
your breath away" beauty!) and a final one that I felt poignant and
heartwarming.  It shows the crew of the USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) standing at
attention around the flight deck to render honors to fallen comrades as she
passes by the Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. Carl Vinson and her battle
group stopped in Hawaii for a port visit before returning home after
completing a regularly-scheduled deployment in support of Operation Enduring
Freedom.  As I saw this photo, I had visions of my own son and his ship,
when they return from over "there" sometime in April.

And, finally, under "Naval Academy Wallpaper" I had fun creating three new
images.  One, from a great photo taken by list member, Tom Miller, which is
in our Photo Gallery, from Sea Trials.  It is a beautiful image, framed by
blossoms that make it a unique respite from the mud, the sweat and the
intensity of the rest of the day. The second image is simply the crest
(light blue) on a dark blue background, and the final wallpaper I am really
proud of - simply the letters USNA, with images from the Yard inserted into
them (all the inserted images are taken from other wallpapers in the
collection).  I think it looks pretty cool!!  :>)

If you come up with an image that you would like made into a wallpaper, just
let me know.  It has to be an image of high resolution and should be a
fairly large pixel size.

Please take a few minutes to look at all of the wallpapers if you have not
done so recently.  There are instructions on how to use them, even for those
of you with Mac's.  I will try to add more images to the Postcards page in
the coming weeks!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Friends and Family...

This evening, a careless member sent a message to our USNA-Family list which
should never have been sent to our membership.  It violated at least three
of our Rules of Operation by NOT being relative to Navy Parenting and by
being political and Religious in nature or content.  All Religious
references are confined to our USNA-Prayer list.

Many of you have written to either Sandi or me to voice your dissatisfaction
with this message.  I have spoken to the author and I have his assurance
that sending this message to our list was an accident and will not happen
again.

At USNA-Net we walk a thin line between being facilitators in our function
as Moderators and interfering with the exchange of valuable Advice and
Support between parents.  We have established our Rules of Operation and set
up certain filters which routinely monitor all messages going to our lists
to filter out requests for a change of address or to subscribe or
unsubscribe from a list.  These sort of Administrative requests need not be
sent to the entire membership and thus are automatically sent only to your
Moderators.

But Sandi and I do not read and forward all of the messages which pass to
our lists on a day to day basis.  We also cannot possibly set up automated
filters to catch every possible violation or improper wording which a member
might choose to use in a message.  Instead we rely upon each of our members
to have read our Rules of Operation and to think about how they use our
service before they send messages to our members.  In this way, using the
Honor System to maintain order and keep our lists focused on our Mission of
Navy Parenting and Parents Helping Parents, we feel we provide the very best
service of its kind available anywhere.

We therefore ask each of you to read our Rules of Operation and our
Netiquette Guide and use your best judgment as you participate in our lists.
We also ask that you be tolerant (to some extent) of other members who
forget or mess up from time to time.  Being a part of a "family" means that
we all have to be understanding as well as considerate.  Considerate, when
we send messages as well as when we read them.

We each have to do our part.

I received a very nice note from a member, who very graciously corrected my
explanation of one of my new wallpaper photos.  Seems I identified one as a
helicopter "landing" when it actually was something totally different.

<<< The helo is not attempting to "land."  It is conducting what is called
VERTREP, for Vertical Replenishment.  Those are pallets of supplies
prestaged on the flight deck inside of cargo nets.  The Helo picks them up
and flies them over to the receiving ship.  If you look at the "Blue Shirt"
on deck by the port side pallets he is attempting to hook a 10 foot pole
with a loop on the top to the underbelly of the helo.  The other end of the
pole is attached to the 4 rings on the corners of the cargo netting.  The
helo then flies this over to another ship and lowers the pallet onto the
deck and releases the hook.

Sometimes the pallet isn't on deck when the hook gets released and drops to
the deck.  The ship in the background looks like it is making its approach
alongside for UNREP (Underway Replenishment), normally for fuel transfer.
The ship in the background  (USS Curtis Wilbur DDG-54 is probably doing 20
Knots and the ship in the foreground is probably at 12.  A number of lines
will be passed between the ships one of which will support a large fuel
hose.

The seven sailors on the foc'sle by the gun mount will man what is called
the phone and distance line when the ships connect up.  This line allows the
two ships to talk to each other and the line also carries flags every 20
feet to help measure the ships separation.

It is with great pride, USNA-Net has the pleasure of announcing the debut of
yet another Club Web Site for USNA Parents.

The Kansas - Western Missouri Parents' Club's Web Site came on-line this
weekend at...

Authored by Gregg Gibson of the MoKan Parents' Club.

This brings the number of web sites being published by local Parents Clubs
to a total of 32 nationwide with 14 of them being hosted on USNA-Net's
server at no cost to the clubs.

It's thanks to our 2,100+ members who generously supported our move to our
new server that USNA-Net is able to offer FREE hosting to any Parents' Club
which wishes to take advantage of this free service.  All your club has to
do is find someone to author the web pages and we can have you set-up and
running in a matter of hours and at absolutely no cost to your club.  We

2.)    Please send us your NAME, your OLD address and your NEW address in
the body of the message.  Don't make us look up who you are or what your old
address was.  We need to know OLD and NEW in order to change them in our
system.

Thank you so much for your cooperation.  By the way...  Don't send us 3, 4
or more reminders.  One is enough.  We take care of them almost immediately.

On another note...   Our Search Engine.

For those of you who actually do try looking things up on the web site, you
probably know that we have a site-wide search engine that you can use to
find every reference to your favorite topic on both the Web Site AND in our
Message Archives.   Just remember to enclose multiple word searches in
quotes to force the search engine to look for the phrase rather than
separate words.  For instance, entering "ring dance" in quotes will ONLY
return occurrences of RING DANCE as a two word phrase.  It will not return
with every occurrence of the word Ring and every occurrence of the word
Dance which could contain many, many references that do not pertain to the
"ring dance" itself.

Everything considered, the Search Engine is a very powerful tool for finding
things.  AND it's almost essential considering the size of our web site.
While fixing a few things on the Search Engine this evening, I ran a new
index and actually read the report that is generated.  It seems our USNA-Net
web site (not including the Club sites we also host on our server) now
has...

    376 Documents with 6, 729, 374 Words of text.

That's a lot of information and growing all the time.  Just remember that
all of this wouldn't have happened without our members to help and support
us.  We couldn't have done it without you.
