To our USNA Family...

For the past several months, I have been working with a local Annapolis
organization to upgrade the Annapolis web cam which we have been displaying
on our main page.  The image had been fairly poor quality and the view was
anything but inspired.

Through the efforts of your Moderators, all of that has changed.  We went
through all of the available technology and finally decided to use the same
camera that we use on our own Westlake Camera.

Today, the Annapolis camera was replaced with a brand new US Robotics 3Com
Camera and new software.  Picture resolution is vastly improved and the view
is pretty spectacular.  It is a telephoto shot of the end of the City Docks
(looking generally from South to North along Randall Street) with the
Middleton Tavern in the distance on the left and the Hardware store on the
right.  Just out of view two blocks beyond the center of the photo is Gate 1
at the Academy.

The camera has changeable lens which include a wide angle and a regular lens
as well a s the telephoto.  All of the lens promise to be very helpful as
different events come to the City Docks during the year.

So check out our brand new camera in Annapolis.  It's just another way that
USNA-Net has gone the extra mile to make your Internet experience just a
little be better and bring you a little closer to your Mids.  When you go to
our web site at www.USNA-Net.org, just click on the USNA CAM logo on the
right side of the page and wait for the pop-up page to bring up the new
camera.  We've put the camera view into a pop-up window so that you can
leave the pop-up window open all day long if you want to keep up with what's
happening in downtown Annapolis while you're at work, etc.

You can't miss the new icon "USNA-Net Polls" smack in the middle of the main
page.  Click and Vote.  That's all there is to it.

The West Point Alumni Organization,  WP-ORG, (with which USNA-Net is NOT
affiliated in ANY WAY) has begun it's 11th semi-annual Fundraiser.  Because
of confusion, and questions posed to us, on the part of some of our members,
Sandi and I feel we should address our response to all of you.

The money WP-ORG seeks to raise will NOT benefit USNA-Net in any way.  We
are a totally independent and separately run organization of Parents. While
there had been a relationship in past years, this is no longer the case.

As most of you are aware, USNA-Net was the ONLY Navy Parents list in
existence until October of last year.  We left WP-ORG's "free" hosting in
favor of our own independent operation for several good and very valid
reasons last September.  If you wish to review these issues, please visit
our USNA-Net Archives for September, 2001.

At that time a handful of former members of this list returned to WP-ORG to
start their own list where there were "No Rules" and where they were able
operate without restraints.

Now, as WP-ORG begins another Semi-Annual Fundraisers, they are seeking
donations from the members of their new USNA-PARENTS listserver.

Please do NOT confuse this reconstituted group of about 300 individuals with
our lists at USNA-Net with over 2,250 families subscribed.

Why have we revisited all of this?

Because we do not want our members to be confused about the separate
operation of our service.  USNA-Net is NOT part of WP-ORG or USNA-PARENTS.

We operate though our own SEPARATE funding.  In October, 2001, USNA-Net,
Inc. solicited donations from our membership to offset our costs.  In SIX
DAYS we reached our annual goal of $4,900.  Since we did it so quickly and
with so much support from our members, we shouldn't have to ask for
additional funds until 2003, if then.

On that $4,900 annual budget, we provide our members with SIX listservers, a
HUGE WEB SITE of 400+ pages and almost 7 million words of information about
Navy Parenting, and host FOURTEEN local Parents' Club web sites FOR FREE and
we do it all without outside banner ads or Corporate Sponsorship.

What you have to remember is this...  WP-ORG is first, last and always, a
WEST POINT ALUMNI ORGANIZATION.  They have over 28,000 West Point Alumni as
members.  The vast majority of WP-ORG's $222,000 annual budget is allocated
for WP Alumni needs as it should be.  Their Navy parents list represents
only ONE list out of over 250 lists maintained for the sole use of WP ALUMNI
and they NO LONGER host ANY Naval Academy Parent Club Web Sites.

Their annual budget includes two full time PAID employees ($103,000 per
year) and another $96,000 per year in consultant(s) fees paid out to
"augment development efforts" whatever that is.  (All of these figures are
available on their web site.)

If you are being solicited for donations by WP-ORG, it is because you have
chosen to join their USNA-PARENTS list.  That is your prerogative, and we
have no problem with your right to make that choice.  But, please, be very
clear about this: The solicitation of money from WP-Org has NOTHING to do
with THIS Parents' Network and USNA-Net, Inc.

If you currently belong to any USNA-Net Listserver using a WEB BASED EMAIL
ACCOUNT such as HOTMAIL or YAHOO, you will be required to change your
address in our system to a "standard" email address BEFORE April 15, 2002.

Beginning April 16th, USNA-Net listservers will no longer provide service to
Web Based Email accounts such as HOTMAIL and YAHOO.

The reason for this change is that these accounts are FREQUENTLY out of
service, unavailable for delivery or OVER QUOTA.  Since the beginning of
this year, we have received 2,739 Message Delivery Problem Notifications
from various Internet Service Providers.  In that twelve weeks, 1,793 of
them (65%) have been for Hotmail or Yahoo accounts.  While web based email
addresses account for less than 10% of our membership, they have caused over
65% of the delivery problems that Sandi and I have to do something about
every day.

During that 12 weeks, we have received an average of THIRTY TWO Delivery
Problem notices EVERY DAY with 2 out of 3 of them caused by these web based
services.  If you discount the problems caused by the @HOME.COM bankruptcy
in February, the problems caused by HOTMAIL and YAHOO email account for
almost 80% of all of our problems.  That's 80% of the problems from less
than 10% of the members.

So, for those who currently receive email from us at HOTMAIL or YAHOO,
please send us the following...

YOUR NAME
YOUR OLD (HOTMAIL or YAHOO) ADDRESS
YOUR NEW (REGULAR) ADDRESS

If you provide those three things, we can change your address in our system
in the blink of an eye and our Moderator problems will be GREATLY
diminished.

For those who use a separate HOTMAIL account for the convenience of keeping
USNA-Net email segregated from regular email, we are providing a detailed
web page TUTORIAL which will show you exactly how to set up Message Rules
and do this using standard features of your regular email program.  See the

We are terribly sorry for any inconvenience this may cause a few of our
long-time members but you must realize that these web based email services
are so terribly unreliable and cause so many unnecessary problems that we

To all...  especially to all the '05 Parents on our USNA-Plebe list,

The question I have for you is, "Have you recruited an '06 Parent to join
our USNA-Net lists yet?"

All of you realize just how valuable this service has been to you for the
past eleven months.  Would you wish the ignorance of not knowing what you
learned from these lists on anyone?  The obvious answer is a very loud "NO!"

Now it's your turn to help us find the next class of USNA parents and make
sure that they just don't know about us but that they join our organization.
Every year we rely upon our current members to make sure that the next group
of helpless moms and dads get connected with our group of over 2,250
experienced parents and become members of USNA-Net.  It's FREE!

Let me say that again...  It's FREE !!!

It's also very PRIVATE !!!  No one gives out your personal information or
email address.  No one will even know you belong to the organization unless
you write to the group.  We can even help with that by forwarding your
embarrassing questions and problems anonymously.

But we can't help anyone if they don't join.

Since the Academy doesn't send out our USNA-Net information with their
"Info" packs, it's up to you, our present members, to get the word out -
tell everyone you see to go to our web site at www.USNA-Net.org and click on
"How to Subscribe"  It's that easy.

No, actually, we made it even easier...  Tell them to go to

and they will be taken to our web site.  That's right.  There are now only
Two (2) web addresses that you ever have to remember.

There is a new V1RUS making the rounds.  What else is new?  It's a nasty
called Kleze.e but both Norton and McAfee AV Programs DO catch it and
protect you from it.

So why am I telling you about this?   Because...

There is now an email message going around that warns you about this V1RUS
and tells you to install a "FAKE" version of Kleze.e to fool the real one
and prevent you from getting it.

THIS IS A HOAX!  IT IS THE REAL V1RUS THAT IS BEING SENT WITH THIS EMAIL!!!!

DO NOT DELIBERATELY INSTALL ANY FAKE V1RUS TO FOOL THE REAL ONE!!!!

The email even tells you to ignore your antivirus software when it warns you
of a virus while you are supposedly installing the fake.  It is NOT a
prevention or a "vaccine" against the REAL virus!!!  IT IS THE REAL VIRUS!

Please don't be fooled.

To all,

Our lists are NOT sending out V1RUS laden emails.  But...  a few of our
members have a problem and it is driving the rest of us nuts.  SEVERAL of
our members are infected with the W32Klez.e@MM V1RUS which sends itself out
to everyone in the member's address book under an ASSUMED IDENTITY - one
that it finds at random in the sender's address book.  The email fakes who
it comes from and thereby, makes it very difficult to discover WHO the
actual infected party really is.

We know it is several different members who are infected because the hidden
header information that accompanies each email comes from different Internet
Service Providers (at least "sans.rr.com" and "verizon.net" for certain).

Here's how this virus works.  It comes attached to an email and once you
OPEN THE ATTACHMENT, it immediately begins sending out copies of itself to
everyone in the infected computer's address book.  It sends these out with a
return address saying it is FROM some random person's address in the
infected computer's address book.  So if the infected person has ever
written to you, it is possible that the virus will be sent TO you and it is
also possible that the message will say it is FROM YOU when it is sent to
others even though YOU are not infected.

MAJOR DANGER - Aside from the annoyance of some of us receiving copies of
this email, if you are infected, the virus will launch a destructive attack
on your hard drive on the 6th day of March, May, September, or November,
overwriting some local and network files AND if the month is January or
July, all files may be overwritten.  This virus could destroy all of our
files if left untreated.

So here's the deal...  If you don't have antivirus software on your
computer, GET IT AND INSTALL IT!  To operate in today's internet world
without it is asking for trouble.

If your antivirus software is over TWO WEEKS OLD, you need to download the
free updates that are available from the people you bought the software
from.  There are so many new viruses coming out all the time that you may
get a new virus that your AV software doesn't know about if you don't update
at least every two weeks.

Please check your computer for viruses TODAY as a courtesy to our other
members and as a safeguard for your computer and all of its files.

Lastly... Rest easy.  You will NEVER receive an attached virus from any
USNA-Net list. Our software strips all attachments from all messages sent to
our lists.  (That's why several messages have recently come as blank
messages without any text.)

USNA-Net has total protection for ALL of our lists unlike OTHER listservers
who have refused to implemented such safeguards.

Remember, the ONLY way you can get this or any other virus is to open an
attachment that comes with an email.  The only way to insure that no one in
your household who uses your computer never opens a virus-laden attachment
is to have CURRENT antivirus software running and keeping you safe all the
time.

Please check your computer today.  It really could be YOU who is infected.

      AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ON CARE PACKAGES FOR I-DAY!
  All local Parents' Club Officers should pass this message to their
membership!

To all,

While this is usually a topic for our Plebe list, since there are so many
parents who will be instructing new Plebe Parents about CARE PACKAGES on
I-Day, we thought that the entire membership should know that there has been
a SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN OFFICIAL POLICY regarding care packages.  Our
Upper-class Parents will want to know because between now and I-Day most of
you will be instructing '06 Parents on what to do for this momentous day.

Since 9/11, a Midshipman is REQUIRED to announce to the Main Office that
he/she is expecting a package to be hand delivered to Bancroft.  Official
Policy is that if the package is delivered unannounced, it will be REFUSED
at the Main Office.

 It has been customary on past I-Days for parents who come to I-Day to leave
a Care Package filled with necessary and/or helpful items (addressed to
their Plebe) at the Main Office in Bancroft Hall during the day, so that
their Plebe will have these items within a day or two of beginning Plebe
Summer.  Some energetic parents even LEFT one package at Bancroft and MAILED
a second package at the local Annapolis Post Office so that their Plebe
could get TWO Care Packages as quickly as possible.

THAT HAS NOW CHANGED DUE TO INCREASED SECURITY AT THE YARD!

This comes directly from Base Operations:

ALL Care Packages are to be mailed via United States Postal Service to
Bancroft Hall.  Leaving packages at the Main Office in Bancroft on I-Day is
STRONGLY DISCOURAGED.

To quote Commander Scott Grundmeier, Naval Academy Base Operations Officer,
"I strongly encourage Moms & Dads to mail the packages through the USPS
versus dropping anything off at Main Office."  He went on to say, "Main
Office is an integral part of the Brigade Watch Organization and is not
equipped to serve as a medium for parcel service.   Besides...then my
security force won't have to check each one as it comes through the Gate.
The USPS serves as an official screener for packages and thus lessens our
need to commit man hours to screening packages as they arrive."

So, what does this mean to our Parents?  The Main Office at Bancroft may
REFUSE to accept packages to be left for Plebes on I-Day.  The USPS will be
screening all packages and make life easier for the Academy Staff.  A
package MAILED will get to your Plebe sooner than one that is left at the
Main Office if it is accepted there at all.

Make up your I-Day Care Packages as usual but drop them off at the local
Annapolis Post Office before you leave town. It is also possible that the
Gate Security Personnel will not allow you to bring packages onto the
Academy grounds as you deliver your Plebe on I-Day.  This could put a severe
crimp in your day and make you late for your appointed report time.

So...  Avoid the problems of getting packages through the Gate, avoid the
problems of having a package refused at the Main Office and simply prepare
it to be mailed after you have your Plebe's Platoon Number.

During Plebe Summer, the US Postal Service mailing address for your Plebe
will be...

You can obtain your Plebe's Platoon Number during the day at a designated
tent/table near Alumni Hall.  Your Plebe should have this information for
you at the end of the day following the swearing in ceremony but you should
not wait until then to obtain it.  There will be precious little time then
for the "goodbyes" that need to be said and you may possibly forget to ask
or your Plebe may not have it with him/her..

Do your part and DO NOT BRING Care Packages to the Academy on I-Day.  Mail
them from home or from Annapolis before you leave the area but do not risk
having the packages confiscated or refused at the Main Office.
