There remain a number of our members who are still infected with one of the
latest strains of the KLEZ. V1RUS as I write this message.   This infectious
strain masquerades as an attachment from someone you probably know and
trust.  It is very dangerous and will eventually do real damage to your
computer's hard drive.

Why am I writing about this?  Because this particular strain sends itself
out under an assumed name, pretending to be from someone else in the
infected computer's address book.  It is, therefore, almost impossible to
tell who is actually infected.  All that can be determined with certainty is
that the infected computer uses a certain Internet Service Provider.  In the
case of our membership, we have at least one member from Netzero.com and one
from AOL.com who are infected RIGHT NOW!  Since we have more than one member
who use these services, all we can do is advise our membership to make sure
that your Antivirus Software is current and that you keep it running at all
times.

Current Antivirus software is very reasonable in cost and will virtually
guarantee that you will not catch a virus when one is sent your way.  I am
in so many addresses books that I receive at least TEN copies of the Klez
virus every day from members who don't even know that they are sending it
out to EVERYONE in their address book.

This is a plea for each and every one of our members to act responsibly and
purchase, install and use AntiVirus software on their home computers.  To
operate in today's environment without AV software is to invite disaster.
It is no longer a matter of IF you get infected.  It is only a matter of
WHEN you will get an infection and crash your system and lose EVERYTHING
inside your computer.

We have solid protection in place on our lists which prevent infected
attachments from reaching you via our lists but that doesn't mean than an
infected computer somewhere won't pretend to be us and send the infection
along to you using USNA-Net.org as the fake sender's address.  The virus can
pretend to come from anyone in the infected computer's address book,
including a Midshipman, one of YOUR relatives, anyone.  It can even pretend
to be from YOU if you are listed in the infected computer's address book.

So...  How do we stop this?  We must ALL (each and every one of us) install
and run AV software on any computer with access to the internet.  It is no
longer an option.  It is the obligation of each of us as responsible members
of our USNA-Net community.

But most of all, you can no longer sit back and assume that this is someone
else's problem.  Unless you can actually prove that you are not infected by
running new AV software and demonstrating that your computer is infection
free, you probably are the computer that is causing the virus to be sent to
the rest of us.

It seems to have slowed down a bit on the lists, so this might be a good
time to remind our members of a few things about our list operations and
such.

ATTACHMENTS
The software we use on our server (where we do all of our mailing and keep
our web site pages) has been set up to reject ALL attachments to email.  We
do this deliberately to significantly reduce the risk of a V1RUS being
transmitted to our members via the lists.  We're sorry that an occasional
innocent attachment from a member is rejected but the absolute safety of our
lists far outweighs the inconvenience.  This is a safety feature we put in
place to protect our USNA-Net membership.  Other servers have chosen to not
use this type of software and rely solely upon their members to have
AntiVirus software in place to protect themselves.

You may have noticed a few "empty" messages on our lists, lately.  These are
the empty carrier messages which have been sent to our lists by infected
members but which have had their virus infected attachments stripped from
them before they went to you.  These "empty" messages are benign but they
are reflect real attempts by the computers of other infected members to
infect our members.  Also, please remember that the latest viruses (Klez
worms) use the address of someone in the infected computer's address book as
the FROM address when they send themselves out so that it is next to
impossible to track down where the virus really came from.  More below...

RICH TEXT FORMAT (RTF) EMAIL
Ever since last October, our server has also been removing RTF or HTML
coding from all email it sends on to our lists.  This takes out all of the
bold, italic, embedded images and stationary.  Not all of our members are
able to read messages which use RTF and for the longest time we had to ask
our members to set their email programs to not send in RTF.  We no longer
have that problem because we now use software that removes the RTF coding
automatically before email is relayed to our lists.  Just remember that you
won't see your pretty stationary in your message to our lists and make
allowances for the loss of BOLD and such, when you compose your messages to
the lists.

FULL MAILBOXES
With over 2,000 USNA-Net members and growing like crazy at this time of
year, it's bound to happen that a few of you let your mailboxes fill up from
time to time.  We totally understand how this can happen, especially if you
are enrolled on our Plebe list.  IF you use a mail service which limits the
amount of email you may leave on the system, please make an effort to empty
out some of the excess to insure there is room for more incoming email.  If
your Mailbox fills up, we can no longer send email to you and will get a
Delivery Problem Notification for each and every email that our list
attempts to send and has returned as undeliverable.

Remember that once your mailbox is full you will miss ALL email, not just
stuff from USNA-Net but email from everyone, including your Mid.

The problem we have is that if your mailbox is full, we can't reach you to
tell you to empty it.  All we can do is wait to see if your account starts
accepting email again.  If we keep getting "mailbox full" notices for
several days, we will remove your address from our lists until we hear from
you again.  We don't like doing this but we really have little choice.  By
the way, if you are an Outlook Express user, you do not have a limit and
your mailbox can accept mail until your hard drive fills up which is more
mail than we will ever send to you in 20 years as a member.  It's those web
based services like Juno, Netscape and others which limit you.  So please
help us to help you.  Don't let your mailboxes fill up.

ANTIVIRUS PROTECTION
We do everything we can to protect our members from viruses.  Our lists
cannot forward attachments containing viruses so you won't get them from us
BUT if you don't have current AV software running on your computer today, it
is almost a 100% certainty that you WILL be infected from other sources, if
you aren't already infected.  We have at least a half dozen members who are
infected RIGHT NOW!  Every time they turn on their computer they spread
their infection to everyone in their address book.  Please, please,
please...  If you don't have CURRENT antivirus software running on your
computer right now, go out and get it.  It is a lot cheaper (less than $50)
than the repair bills WHEN (not if) your computer crashes because of a
virus.

Other things you can do to lessen the risk...

1.)    Never turn off or disable your AV software.
2.)    Don't ignore Virus warning from your AV software.
3.)    Never open attachments, even if they are from a friend but ESPECIALLY
if they are unannounced and have either no message with them or have a short
cryptic message in less than perfect grammar.
4.)    Turn off the feature that automatically adds everyone to whom you
send a message to your address book.  If you do get infected this will
lessen the number of people to whom you send it.
5.)    Clean our your address book.  Fewer names means fewer victims if you
do get infected.
6.)    Make sure you are using the latest version of your AV software.  Old,
out-dated software is worse than none at all because it gives you a very
FALSE sense of security.
7.)    Make sure that everyone who uses YOUR computer knows about
attachments and their danger.  If your spouse or kids are careless, you will
still get the infection, no matter how careful YOU are.
8.)    Use current, up-to-date Antivirus software all the time.
9.)    Use current, up-to-date Antivirus software all the time!
10)   Use current, up-to-date Antivirus software ALL THE TIME!!!

You get the point.  Don't say we didn't warn you.

thought we'd bring you yet another important tidbit of information about
V1RUSES and such.  The Klez W0RM is running rampant among our members who
were foolish enough to not use AntiV1RUS software.  Currently we have
members who are infected at AOL, Verison, cv.net, rr.com, att.net, and
others.  They opened an attachment and got the infection.  Don't follow in
their footsteps.

AND DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE FOLLOWING...

The following message is now being sent around with THE ORIGINAL VIRUS
ATTACHED!!!  It is a hoax designed to get you to infect your computer by
attempting to install a FAKE fix for the worm.  The HOAX message says...

Please do not be FOOLED by this message.  Everything in this message is a
LIE !!!  The attached files ARE THE VIRUS and not a fix for the virus.  Your
AV software will warn you for good reasons...  The attached files are NOT
fake viruses BUT THE REAL THINGS!

Bottom Line...

DON'T OPEN ANY ATTACHMENT !!!  PERIOD.

INSTALL and USE current AntiVirus Software today!!!

PS.  At least a half a dozen of our members are infected as they read this.
ARE YOU ONE OF THEM???  Don't dismiss this as something that only happens to
others.  If you don't have AV software installed or running with CURRENT
data, it really could be YOU.  You won't dismiss this as someone else's

Subject: Lyme Disease Warning


Hi Mike and Sandi -

Wanted to send this to you as an anonymous posting since my Mid would shoot
me if this is traced back.  My Mid, now a second class mid, was at Quantico
for the first week  of her first summer block and is now out in San Diego.
While running around the woods at Quantico, along with other mids,my Mid got
bitten by ticks.

They were warned that this might happen.  Since we are from Maryland, we are
aware of the danger of contracting Lyme Disease from a tick bite.   Sure
enough, within a few days of arriving in San Diego, one of the bites
developed the red ring.  My Mid reported to the medical office there and is
now on antibiotics.  Again, coming from this region, my Mid was careful to
monitor for any symptoms indicating that there might be an infection and was
proactive in seeking medical assistance.  The goods news is that, if treated
early, Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection and is easily cured with no
further side effects.

The bad news is that if left untreated there can be long-term serious side
effects.  The early warning signs are a red ring or rash around the bite
area followed by flu like symptoms and pain in joints.  I am leaving it up
to you if you think that our parents should be alerted to this and in turn
alert their mids to seek medical treatment quickly if they have been or will
go to Quantico for Marine orientation [or any other tall grass or wooded
area].  I am especially concerned for those mids who come from other regions
of the U.S. were Lyme Disease is not present.

With the rash of new V1RUSES (especially the Klez V1RUS), we have been
receiving about a dozen infected pieces of email every day for the past
several weeks.  Sandi and I enjoy being in all of your address books (along
with the addresses of all of our USNA-Net lists) but every time one of you
contracts an infection, we get several copies for our very own.  While we
appreciate all of you who want us to be intimately involved with our lists,
this is too involved.  :>)

Because of the way the Klez V1RUS works, we can determine which Internet
Service Provider the infected member uses but we cannot determine exactly
WHO these members are.

As of today, we know of at least EIGHT MEMBERS who have Klez.  They belong
to one of the following Service Providers...

    AOL.com
    earthlink.net
    cv.net
    verison.net
    netzero.net
    swbell.net
    mindspring.net
    prodigy.net

If YOUR service provider is on this list, it could be YOU that has the
virus.  Don't just dismiss this message with "It can't be me."  Please make
SURE that it is NOT you!

It is definitely SOMEBODY.  I can guarantee that all of those members who
are infected are reading this message right now and are dismissing this
email warning, sure that it isn't them.  Unless you've scanned your system

A special message from your Moderators...

After yesterday's note about the Safe Harbor Program, I'm happy to announce
that we had an additional 42 members volunteer to act as Safe Harbor homes
for Mids with an emergency away from home.  Thanks so much to all who
responded.  You are already in our database and will be called if there is a
Mid in need near you.

On a related note, a member suggested that we consider expanding the program
to include non-emergencies where a mid could stay for a few days with
volunteer parents when traveling away from the Yard.  Such a program ALREADY
EXISTS.  It's called the Local Parents Club.  There are a list of club
presidents on the web (maintained by the Alumni Association's Parent
Coordinator, Jill Montone) which lists all of the local club officers and
gives contact information so that you can reach them when you are in their
area.

Most of the clubs have (either officially or unofficially) a person in
charge of coordinating visits of Midshipmen with parents in the area.  We
have repeatedly seen this done extremely well in various locations across
the country when the Glee Clubs or some sports team travel to every corner
of this country.  My hats off to those clubs who have been lucky enough to
host a major event over the past few years and put up between a handful to
several dozen Mids who have come to their neck of the woods.  We've heard
many wonderful stories of delightful Mids sleeping everywhere there was flat
space in a member's home because their Parents' Club was hosting a group of
Mids.

So here is just one more benefit of joining your Local Parents' Club.  And
if your club doesn't have an official contact / coordinator for such visits,
why not volunteer to be that person and set up an official program within
your club.  I know of no surer way for you to guarantee that you will have
Mids staying in your home than by being the Parent in your club who arranges
all of that stuff.  Your club will love you for it and you will be helping
the Brigade the next time any of the Mids travels in your area.

Join your local Parents Club TODAY!!!

Administrative requests are NOT to be sent to the list address.  They are to
be sent to the Moderators at Moderator@usna-net.org.

Please take a moment to read our Frequently Asked Questions on the web site
for answers to all sorts of administrative questions about our lists and how
they operate including...

    How to SUBSCRIBE.
    How to CHANGE your address in our system.
    How to ADD or DROP a list.
    How to ADDRESS email to a particular list.
    Which lists are for what.

and a lot of other common questions.

It is unnecessary to inconvenience the entire list membership by sending
your subscription request to everyone by addressing it to the main email
address of the list.  All such requests are to be sent to the moderators at
Moderator@usna-net.org.


ABOUT OUR LIST STRUCTURE...

Everyone belongs to and may write to USNA-Family about things of general
interest to the general membership.  BUT...  Please remember that there are
many members who do not wish to participate in either Plebe or Sports or
Religious questions and advice.  These members of our USNA-Family list have
elected to NOT belong to one or more of the other lists: Plebe, Sports, and
Prayer.  This is why it IMPORTANT to keep Plebe issues on USNA-Plebe,
everything related to Sports topics (including Tickets) on USNA-Sports and
even the most casual religious references on USNA-Prayer.

Remember that ALL of our lists cross the lines between Graduating Classes.
For instance...  Of the over 1,300 members of USNA-Plebe, only 250 of them
are actually '06 parents at this point.  The rest are upper-class and even
graduate parents who belong in order to pass on advice to other parents.

And while I have your attention...  Where ARE all the other '06
Parents??????
Have you recruited another '06 Parent yet?  When were you going to get
around to it?  A whole bunch of upper-class parents went out of their way to
help you when you were a Plebe parent.  Isn't it fair that you put yourself
out just a little bit this summer to find and recruit an '06 parent???   Now
get to it!

A special message from your Moderators...

Sandi and I will be attending I-Day, driving down on Thursday afternoon and
returning on Saturday evening.  We would ask that you all hold off on any
Email Requests for list administration matters until we return.  We will be
accessing the server and our email while we are in Annapolis but we would
like to DELAY any alternations in addresses or list memberships until after
our return.

For those who will be looking for us, Sandi and I will be at Alumni Hall
early in the day, at the Picnic late morning and generally around the Yard
all day.  We will be joining other USNA-Net members and sponsor parents
following the swearing in ceremony to meet with unaccompanied Mids to supply
a cell phone to make that last call home.  Just tell your Mid to look for
all of us near the "Unaccompanied Mids Area" in the center of Stribling
Walk.

We will be taking lots of pictures to post in the Photo Gallery upon our
return.  Stay tuned for details on Sunday.
