A special message from your Moderators...

Sandi and I have finished the photos of I-Day and placed them on our web
site for all of you to view. To view the pics (all 228 of them) go to the
web site at www.USNA-Net.org - Click on "Photo Gallery" in the main menu on
the left of the main page. Then Click on "I-Day 2002" at the top of the
Photo Gallery page.

This will take you to the first of TWO pages with loads of pics. Click on
any of the small pics for a larger, higher resolution photo of what is shown
in the little "thumbnail photos."

What's there? 228 Photos in all.

- Loads of Faces.
- 72 Pics from INSIDE Alumni Hall which trace your Plebe's Path from the
front doors through every station and out the loading dock to the Buses.
- Pics of the entire Administrating of the Oath Ceremony.
- Pictures of the Reunion Meeting on Stribling Walk following the Oath
Ceremony.
-Pics of twenty of the Fifty or more Unaccompanied Plebes who used our cell
phones to call home before going back to rejoin their classmates for Plebe
Summer.
- Loads of Faces of those Marching to King Hall for dinner.
- A panorama of the Oath Ceremony which shows every Plebe and every Detailer
present.

Enjoy them all. It was a two day effort to edit them, adjust for exposure,
crop for content and put them into a narrative format on TWO web pages.
Sandi and I will gladly provide high resolution copies of any individual
photos you may find which contains YOUR Plebe or Detailer.

We have seen many name tags of members sons and daughters on our originals
photos. Please Note: We deliberately blur all name tags visible in our web
photos to protect the identity of all Mids. We also did not take any photos
in sensitive areas within Alumni Hall where we were told NO PHOTOS ARE
PERMITTED by the Academy such as the Medical Exam Areas or Uniform Fitting
Rooms. BUT... We got photos of EVERYTHING else.

Unlike some commercial photo services which remove photos after a period of
time, we will leave these photos on our web site so that you and all of your
family members may visit the site and view the photos as often as you like.
they will become part of our permanent collection.

Remember, our Photo Gallery is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC which even includes your
Mids. Let everyone know that they can look at these photos as often as they
wish.

To all of you who have said that you can't find the I-Day Photos...

You have your browser's software set incorrectly. You must REFRESH your
image when you get to our web site. You do this by holding down the Control
(Ctrl) Key WHILE you use your mouse to click on the "Refresh" icon in your
browser's main menu. Doing this will force your computer to retrieve the
latest copy of the page from the Internet instead of supplying it from your
outdated computer memory (cache) of what the page looked like the last time
you visited the site.

So, go to www.USNA-Net.org and once the page has completely loaded, hold
down the Ctrl Key while you use your mouse to "Left Click" on the REFRESH
icon in your browser's main menu at the top of the page.

You should see a big NEW graphic image in the middle of the main page which
says "I-DAY PHOTOS" in blue and yellow letters. Just click there for all
the photos.

If you know all about this, STOP. If you're a computer newbie, read on...
----------------------------------------------------------------
Why does this happen?

Years ago when computer modems weren't as fast and computer manufacturers
wanted to improve their computer's performance as an Internet access tool,
the computer designers decided that it was a whole lot faster to download a
page from the World Wide Web the first time and store it away on your
computer's local hard drive (in cache memory) rather than downloading it
every time you went to the page since pages back then didn't change much (or
often) and retrieving a page from cache was thousands of times faster than
pulling it down from the Internet every single time you went to the page.

Things have changed, Modems now operate at 56,000 bites per second instead
of 300 to 1,200 bps while cable modems and DSL telephone lines make speeds
of 112,000 to 512,000 bps possible. Web designers have taken advantage of
the high speeds available to all of us and routinely change web content on a
daily (even minute by minute) basis. It is not uncommon for some web sites
to even scroll "live" data (such as stock prices) in real time, literally
changing the page's content as you watch.

This is GOOD for us as users but very BAD for service providers such as AOL
and MSN since they have to transmit all of the data that your computer (and
the millions of computers used by their other customers) ask for every time
you click on a hyperlink and want the content of yet another page. So,
services like AOL, who provide their customers with their own software, make
sure that when you install their program on your computer, it sets itself to
use cache memory instead of downloading fresh pages every time. (This is
called a Default Setting.) Most users never notice the difference and the
service provider only has to provide a small fraction of the data every day
that not using cache memory would require of them.

If you have never looked at or altered your browser's Default Settings, it's
time you did. Your browser should be set to AT LEAST look for new pages
ONCE PER DAY. Mine is set to look for updated content EVERY TIME I visit a
page.

I hope this helps. Since there are so many different Browsers and ways to
set these defaults, I just can't give out specific instructions to each of
you. But now that you know where to look and what the problem is, perhaps
you will be able to explain it to someone and have them fix it for you.

Go Navy!

A special message from your Moderators...

When Sandi and I put a little extra effort into a project like the I-Day
photos, it is extremely gratifying to know that so many of you took the time
to visit the site and view the pics.

Yesterday from Midnight to Midnight, our web site counter recorded 2,120
unique visitors, an all time record attendance, especially for a Monday,
workday. That could only mean one thing, you guys really wanted to see our
pics in the photo gallery.

We've been keeping track of visits since we put up the counter in March of
1999. At that time, USNA-Net was a small group of about 100 parents and if
we had 50 hits in one day, we were ecstatic - amazed actually. With your
help and support, we have grown to 2,247 members as of this morning and our
site routinely get over 500 visits everyday. (As a point of interest, each
time the counter increments, you will hear it sing a short ascending warble
(Doodly-doodly-doodly-deet) telling you that someone else has gone to the
site while you were there. Yesterday, we heard it play that sound more than
once every minute. Terrific!

Speaking of membership numbers... As of this morning, we have 330 '06
families signed up. That's a good starting point but it's only 25% of the
class and we have a long way to go before we finish Plebe Summer. Last year
at the end of Plebe Summer, we had over 600 '05 families signed up. We need
to do even better than that this year.

Please help us find and recruit OTHER '06 families. All of you who are
members of USNA-Net know the value of the advice and support each of you has
received from our service - from each other. Someone told you about us and
now, IT'S YOUR TURN! We need new members so that the service can continue
its Mission of "Parents Helping Parents." Without Parents, all of this
serves no purpose. The single most meaningful contribution any of you can
make as a member is to convince another parent to take the time to join our
lists. YOU know they won't be sorry. Now convince THEM !!!

Our current membership numbers by Class as of 7/2/02...

    06 - 330
    05 - 655
    04 - 544
    03 - 404
    02 - 193
    01 - 61
    00 - 39
Other - 21

Total - 2247

Each successive year we have gained more members of the incoming class.
Won't you please help us do it again this year? Click on the "Pass on the
Tradition" icon on our web site for additional information on how to reach
other parents at Picnics, Club Meetings and on the Yard. Our only purpose
for doing any of this is to help other parents. We can't do that if you,
personally, won't help us find and enlist them. Remember... It's FREE.

Thanks again.

<<< My question: is the Safe Harbor for the mids after they've exhausted all
their options. >>>

Dear Navy Family Members,

USNA-Net began the Safe Harbor program for one purpose - To HELP Mids who
need emergency assistance. We can't do that if they don't call us.

To that end, a little extra more explanation may be in order. Sure, we ask
that they not call three weeks in advance to find out if there is a place to
stay near their favorite resort over Spring Break. Safe Harbor is not
intended to be a youth hostel or travel agency. If a Mid calls under those
circumstances, we simply explain the facts and move on. We've already done
that a couple of times and really don't mind.

But you need to realize our volunteer parents really WANT to be able to help
when there is a need. No one said anything about waiting until we are your
last resort or after all other options are exhausted. There were two recent
cases in which Safe Harbor was NOT called, when we probably could have been
of service... The 24 stranded incoming '06 Plebes at the airport in Chicago
and this most recent Mid at BWI. We have several volunteers near each
airport who would gladly have come to the assistance of these Mids. In
fact, we understand that the incoming '06 Plebes had to pool their money to
get a couple of hotel rooms. We could have saved them the expense by
providing homes nearby at no cost. We would at least have told them that
since the airlines cancelled their flight, the airlines were obligated to
provide them all with FREE hotel rooms nearby plus meals. As it was, they
didn't call and we couldn't help.

The moral of the story is... If there are problems, call. If we can help,
believe me, we will. We have amassed a database of over 700 households
across the country and on three continents who are waiting for us to call
with your Mid's problem in their neck of the woods. Make sure YOUR Mid has
a Safe Harbor card in his/her wallet. We can't help, if they don't call.

Go to the web site at www.USNA-Net.org and click on the Life Preserver
graphic in the upper right corner of the main page. There are complete
instructions there about the program and how it works.

While Sandi and I were at I-Day, we had occasion to meet Col. Allen. When I
explained that we were the parents group responsible for the Safe Harbor
Program, he said that he was aware of the program and thought it was a
wonderful initiative to help "his" Midshipmen. High praise indeed from the
man in charge.

Let's all keep in mind that we are doing all of this... the web site, the
photo gallery, the parents lists, Safe Harbor, all of it, for only one
reason... TO HELP. To help our Mids and to help each other. But we can't
help if people don't know about us. Have YOU recruited another member yet?
Without you to tell them about us, they will be doing this all on their own.
Find another parent and tell them about us. Insist that they join the
service right away. Don't put it off or wait for someone else to do it.
They need our advice and support today.

Go Navy - Beat army.

A special message from your Moderators...

To all of our new Plebe Members...

It is a busy time of year for us all and the message traffic on our Plebe
list really indicates just how (concerned)(proud)(worried)(happy) you all
are.

We would like to thank all of you for your interest in USNA-Net and hope
that it is everything and more that you expected. In order to make it the
best service of its kind available anywhere, we need a little cooperation
from you, our newest members.

We need each of you to go to our web site and take just a couple of minutes
to read our Rules of Operation. (I know we asked that you do this when you
joined but we realize how busy you all are and how easy it is to put it
off.)

But it's really important. These Rules benefit each of you and help us to
attain our Mission of "Parents Helping Parents."

Because some of you see other members doing things and assume that because
one member did it, it must be OK, we thought we would remind you of some of
those things which really aren't OK on our lists and the reasons behind
them...

No "Are you There?" messages looking for other parents. There are just so
many members on this list that we can't become a Parent Finder Service.
It's not fair to our other 2,400+ members to have to read and delete your
message looking for your Mid's roommate's parents. If each of our members
did this just once per semester, all of us would have a dozen of these
messages in our inboxes every day and our server would have to transmit an
additional 9.8 MILLION messages in a year's time.

Please send your message to the correct list. We have separate lists for
different interest groups. All Plebe stuff MUST be sent to USNA-Plebe.
Sports to USNA-Sports and all Religious References are confined to
USNA-Prayer. Remember, EVERYONE belongs to USNA-Family BUT... over 1,000
upper-class parents ALSO belong to USNA-Plebe to act as Mentors to our 506
'06 Families. Those who want to participate in either Sports or Religious
topics ALSO belong to those lists as well as to our USNA-Family list. In
using the correct list you minimize the number of "excess" emails that go
those members who do not wish to participate in those discussions. Using
the correct list benefits everyone.

No Commercial Content. We just can't permit members to offer things For
Sale or ask for FAVORS or endorse a particular product or establishment. It
triggers lengthy exchanges where other members feel obligated to chime in
with their favorite place or deal. We can't be the Annapolis Chamber of
Commerce and established our Classified Ads to be used by our members
instead. It is also very unfair to those members who operate local
establishments who cannot use our list to advertise their business to other
members while you give glowing endorsements of their competitors on the
list.

Please send your Private responses just to the individual instead of to the
entire list. This will minimize the "excess" traffic and make a whole lot
of members a lot happier when they go to their mailboxes each day. Unless
it is really important to share a message with the whole list, make sure
that you hit the "Reply to Sender" Button instead of the "Reply to ALL"
Button.

And lastly... (This isn't a rule but a real courtesy.) Please resist the
temptation to hit the Reply button only to say "I agree" or "Yeah, That's
what I did, too." These little messages really don't need to be sent unless
they add some real information or advice. Remember that every time you send
a message to our lists, you are sending out between 1,400 and 2,400 email
messages. Our members love hearing from all of you but we need quality not
just quantity.

So do your part, read our Rules of Operation and maximize the benefit we all
get from being a part of the biggest and best Parent's Network in the world.

Go Navy - Beat army!

Subject: HIGH ALERT FROM USNA SECURITY DEPT.- NO HAND-DELIVERED PACKAGES TO
BANCROFT HALL!

Dear USNA Parent Club Presidents, Webmasters, Newsletter Editors and
Contacts:

Please be advised that the USNA Security Department has determined that NO
HAND-DELIVERED PACKAGES WILL BE DELIVERED TO BANCROFT HALL. This would
include packages arriving from local vendors such as bakery items, flowers,
grocery store orders, catering, gift baskets, etc. Only packages arriving
via RECOGNIZED CARRIERS such as U.S. Mail, Fed Ex or UPS will be accepted.

Because hand-delivered packages cannot be adequately inspected, the USNA
Security Department has determined that they will not be allowed for receipt
at the Bancroft Hall front desk area. As Parent Club Officers and Contacts,
please do your best to immediately alert all members of your club concerning
this new security development.

Thank you for your cooperation in distributing this information.

A special message from your Moderators...

Fellow USNA-Net members...

Now that Plebe Summer is winding down and most of our newest members have
been on board for a while now, it's time to remind our members of what our
lists are really for.

USNA-Net was created to provide an Advice and Support Network for Parents of
Midshipmen and we like to think that we do that very well. We're here as
Parents of Graduates, Firsties, Second Class, Youngsters and even incoming
Plebes, to be there for each other, 24/7 with advice and support on Navy
Parenting issues as only other Parents can support each other.

This is our only Mission.

We are not here to provide Mids with rides to BWI, deliver Care Packages or
arrange for a place to stay when hotel rooms are scarce in Annapolis. We
are not here to provide a way for those who reside outside Annapolis to ask
those wonderful Sponsor Families and Parents in the area for special FAVORS.

Please try to imagine for just a moment how it would feel to be on the other
end. Imagine that you live in Annapolis and really want to help other
parents. You really like going to the Yard, taking a few pics of the
happenings when you get a chance, and catering to the needs of your
Sponsored Mids or even your own son or daughter who is attending USNA.

Then, you join an advice and support group and suddenly, 2.500+ members of
that organization start writing to the whole group asking that someone in
the local do this or that for this "poor out of town mom." You don't want
to say no but you can't deal with the sheer volume of requests. If every
one of our members asked for just ONE FAVOR each semester, all of us would
have almost 100 such requests in our mailboxes every week and our server
would have to deliver over 12.5 MILLION additional pieces of email in a
year's time. That's a lot of FAVORS! Because we are a lot of parents.

We have only a handful of members in and around the Yard. It is truly
unfair to them to impose upon their gracious and generous nature by asking
that they drop everything and run an errand for you. Sure, it may be very
important to you or your Mid but we out number the locals by about 500 to 1.

Our lists are not a substitute for buses and van service. These services
are available 24/7 with just a phone call. We are not a delivery service
for birthday cakes. The local establishments all take orders over the
phone. What is that old saying? "Lack of planning on your part does not
make it an emergency on my part." ???

Please remember that we have our Safe Harbor program and it is available
24/7 for all Mids almost anywhere in the world in real emergency situations.
But it too, is not to be used as a bus service or a youth hostel. It's for
emergencies only - to be used when things foul up and last minute changes,
cancellations and delays mess up a Mids travel schedule or leave them really
stranded. Can you imagine the calls we'd get just before Spring Break, if
Mids could use Safe Harbor for a place to stay weeks in advance. I wouldn't
want to be the volunteer in the Virgin Islands when 4,000 Mids suddenly
decided they needed a place to stay over Spring Break.

So there you have it. The reasoning behind our NO FAVORS rule. Please take
the time to reread and understand our Rules of Operation. They're not there
to restrict your participation. They are all in place to insure the
greatest benefit to the maximum number of members and the continued growth
of our organization. If too many members get disgusted with too many
non-essential messages in their mailboxes each day, they will simply
unsubscribe and, without members, the lists will die.

These are YOUR lists. These are your friends and fellow parents. Let's all
do everything we can to make this the best and most helpful resource for
Parents anywhere.

Thank you all...
