Dear Parent Club Presidents and Contacts:

USNA Security has requested that the following information be distributed to
all USNA Parent Clubs. Please contact your members regarding this
development. Thank you.-Jill

Vehicular Access to the Naval Academy for Plebe Parents' Weekend will be
limited to those with current Department of Defense (DoD) stickers or
current Friends of the Naval Academy (FONA) cards. During the summer,
company officers coordinated with Naval Academy security for the issuance of
FONA cards with information provided by midshipmen and their parents. This
has been an ongoing process over the summer and the last group was just
completed, hopefully in time to reach family members.

For those not possessing a FONA or DOD pass, shuttle service will be
available on the following schedule.

8/8/02 (Thu) - 1200 - 2200 (Stadium to Dahlgren Hall)
8/9/02 (Fri) - 0500 - 1700 (Stadium to Dahlgren Hall)
8/10/02 (Sat) - 0800 - 1500 (Stadium to Alumini Hall)

NOTE: Saturday's shuttle is to Alumni Hall for the parade and
Superintendent's Forum

Additionally, if a Plebe is in the vehicle, that vehicle may drive on the
Naval Academy whether or not it possesses a DoD or FONA pass. The Plebe
will be required to show his Military Identification to the guard at the
gate for entry.

A special message from your Moderators...

To all,

Photos are not the only thing I have been working on lately. I have put
together 15 new USNA/Navy/Marine Wallpapers for use on your computer
desktops.

We added our 2,500th active member today, thank you to EVERY one of you who
have put the word out and recruited new members!!! It has been awhile
since I created new wallpapers, and there have been a lot of new members
since the last announcement. I imagine there are quite a few of you out
there who may not have taken a look at the Wallpaper page! Well, perhaps
tonight you could take a few minutes to view it. I am sure you will find
something you like there.

There are six new Naval Academy wallpapers: One is of Plebes from the Class
of 2005 during their plebe summer, one is of the Chapel taken on Easter last
year, one is of USNA baseball (you'll have to take a look to see what I
mean), one is of the flag that flies in front of Bancroft, and there are two
graphic images - one of Bill the Goat and one of the USNA letters and crest
(I designed these using a couple of decals I picked up at the Visitor's
Center Gift Shop). Three of these were created from photos that members
took while at the Yard.

There are also six wallpapers that are made from pictures on the Navy
website - photos taken in the fleet that I found particularly interesting or
exciting.

There is one image of a Marine recruiting poster that a member of our lists
sent to me. Thanks, Linnane.

Then there are two images that recently appeared on our Photo Gallery pages,
taken on the YP cruises this summer. Both are great shots that just
screamed to me to make them into wallpaper.

I have placed all 15 at the top of the Wallpaper page, under the heading,
"Our Newest Wallpapers" so you do not have to search for them among the
rest. (But, please, do, take a look at the others!) This brings the total
of wallpapers on the page to 81. I have had a great deal of fun creating
them, I hope you have had fun using them on your computers. I know that I
change MY wallpaper often!!

To see them, all you need to do is go to the USNA-Net website:
www.usna-net.org and click onto "Wallpaper" from the menu items on the left
side of the page. There are instructions on how to use them, there are even
instructions for those of you using a Mac!!

Hope you like these new ones!

A special message from your Moderators...

A little while ago, a "strange" message was sent to our USNA-Plebe list
which said it was from Roger Slater. Many members have asked about it.
Here's the explanation...

First of all, it was NOT from Roger. It was from someone who has HIS email
address in their address book. While we can't identify the actual person
whose computer attempted to send the email, we know it came from someone who
is a member of USNA-Plebe AND uses AOL as their service provider.

It was sent to all of the addresses in that person's address book because
THAT person has a V1RUS infection in their computer. They got the infection
by opening an email that was pretty much like the one you saw but it had a
V1RUS in an attachment to that email. Now, every time they turn on their
computer, it sends out copies of the virus to everyone they ever wrote an
email to. AND it forges the return address using an address it selects at
random from the infected computer's address book.

So..... Everyone on USNA-Plebe received a copy of the message that was
forged by a V1RUS under Roger's email address today. BUT NO ONE RECEIVED
THE INFECTION FROM US because our software automatically strips attachments
from all email being sent to our lists BEFORE they are sent along to our
members. Virus infections are carried in executable files which are
attached to email by malicious viruses. Just opening an attachment can
result in an infection that could destroy your computer! So we stop
attachments before they go to the lists.

We can't stop viruses which are sent to you directly by an infected
computer. YOU should have current antivirus software installed and running
at all times on your computer. If your AV software hasn't been updated in
the past WEEK, you are at risk. Most AV software updates it information
about known viruses about that often and the updates are free over the
internet for a year after you purchase the software and renewals are only a
few dollars per year after that. It's very inexpensive insurance when you
consider that a virus can destroy your computer and turn it into a very
expensive paper weight. So no harm was done. Our listserver software
functioned exactly as it was supposed to.

A WORD OF WARNING...
Other groups providing list services like ours DO NOT have such protection
in place. You are at risk of infection from ATTACHMENTS which their list
WILL pass along and from Rich Text Email (which can have malicious scripts
embedded INSIDE THE ACTUAL EMAIL). Just reading such Rich Text Email can
result in an infection without even opening any attachments.

Get and use Antivirus software TODAY and every day.

A special message from your Moderators...

A reminder may be appropriate from time to time that our lists are all about
"Advice and Support" and are not intended to serve as an announcement medium
for "Breaking News" stories or rumors of things alleged to have happened on
the Yard.

When you become aware of anything which involves a Midshipman which could
even possibly be construed as Breaking News or gossip, we ask that you check
first with the Moderators and NEVER post anything like this to the lists.
We all have a responsibility to USNA and to the parents of Midshipmen who
are our members to exercise restraint and good judgment in all such matters.

Our Rules of Operation are very specific about this sort of thing. They
say...

"3.) Positive Content ONLY
Reports of Negative Incidents or "Fast Breaking News Stories" concerning any
Midshipman or the USNA are prohibited. The potential harm to Midshipmen,
the USNA and this Listserver from such "tabloid" type messages could be
substantial."

and

"7.) Rights to Privacy
A Midshipman's and his/her family's right to privacy are paramount and
should be considered prior to ANY reference in a message, especially, in the
case of a death, serious medical or personal situation involving a
Midshipman or his/her family."

Thank you for taking the time to read and understand these very important
Rules.

A special message from your Moderators...

It's time again to beg all of our members to get, install and keep updated
AntiV irus Software (AVS) for their computers. Why? Because right now there
are at least a DOZEN of our 2,500 members who are CURRENTLY infected with
the "Sexy HaHaHa Funny - Snow White" and one or more variations of Klez Vi
rus. All of which arrive at your computer via email from a friend or
someone you actually might know. The Funny Little Email Messages which
transmit these Vi ruses are sometimes short or appear to be empty of any
message but ALL of them come with at least one or more attachments or
embedded files.

The Klez Vi rus shows up as an email from someone you know. It has an
innocent looking attachment which doesn't appear to do anything when you
attempt to look at it. But if you opened that attachment, your computer is
infected and is already sending out copies of the infection to EVERYONE in
your address book under the name of some poor innocent person it also found
at random in your address book. It is almost impossible to figure out WHO
really sent it since only the domain of the sender is truly identified. The
identity of the sender is faked to be someone in the infected computer's
address book.

I get a dozen such infected emails EVERY DAY from members who have my name
in their address book. Every time they sign on to the Internet, I get
another copy of the virus because they are still infected and every time
their computer connects to the Internet, it send out another copy of the
virus to everyone in that address book.

Occasionally, our lists receive them, as well, because the infected person
has the list's address in their address book. Fortunately, at USNA-Net, our
servers CANNOT pass imbedded images or attachments to list members via email
to our lists. Our automated filters remove ALL such potentially deadly
things from your USNA-Net email before it is transmitted to our lists.

You will NEVER receive ANY attachment or imbedded image or file in ANY
message you receive from our USNA-Net lists. This is exactly how viruses
are transmitted via email and USNA-Net removes ALL files, maps, images,
stationary and such from ALL of our USNA-Net email BEFORE it is sent to our
membership. It is only email with attachments or imbedded graphics or
executable files which can pass on viruses and which you MUST be constantly
on the lookout against. If you receive email with internal graphics or
files attached, remember, without AVS in place, these imbedded graphics or
attachments could be viruses in disguise.

This message is to remind ALL of you to check your computer today for
viruses. Unless your AVS is less than a couple of weeks old, you could be
infected and spreading stuff to others. This week we received infected
files from members who use the following Internet Service Providers...

    AOL.com
    Earthlink.com
    cv.net
    verison.net
    netzero.net
    msn.com
    swbell.net
    mindspring.net
    prodigy.net
    voyager.net

Even if you do not use one of these Internet Service Providers, it is still
possible that you have an infection. Please get and use AV software today.
Let's wipe out virus infections among USNA-Net members THIS WEEK. We can do
it if each of you seriously looks at your own computer and makes sure that
it is clean. It a lot easier to wipe out an infection on your computer
BEFORE it wipes out your hard drive and costs you hundreds or thousands of
dollars to replace software and hardware that is eventually destroyed by the
virus. It's only a matter of time until a virus strikes at YOUR computer.
Will you be safe?

Please note that we now have 634 '06 Parents and 1,459 members on our
USNA-Plebe List. That means there are 825 Upper-Class Parents who belong to
USNA-Plebe to help answer questions on that list. Out special thanks to all
of the Upper-Class parents who have stuck it out on USNA-Plebe to pass on
the tradition and their wealth of experience and information.

All of these numbers are reported graphically on the web site at the bottom
of the main menu on the left of the main page simply by clicking on the
"List Membership Totals" link and the individual List Headings: "Net, Plebe,
Sports and Prayer." You'll find two different graphs hidden away there for
your information, anytime.

Our major Plebe Summer growth spurt seems to have come to an end but we will
continue to add members all through the Academic Year. Please tell all of
the other Parents you meet to visit our web site and sign up for our FREE
service, even now. We will be sharing Advice and Support among our
membership all year long. If you haven't told another parent about
USNA-Net, make a point to share your experiences with those other members
who will still benefit from joining our organization. Have you joined your
Local Parents' Club yet? There is still time to join and plenty to do in
your local club now that the rigors of Plebe Summer are past us for the
Class of 2006.

Remember that we will be sharing lots of Sports Talk on USNA-Sports as the
AC year begins and the Football Season takes us into all sorts of topics on
what to expect and how to make the most of a visit to the Yard on a Football
weekend. And of course, all of the discussions about the A/N and Navy-Notre
games will be happening on USNA-Sports. If you're not a member of that
list, now is the time to request that your name be added so you don't miss
out on all of the details on travel and tailgating involved in the two Big
Games for our new coach.

As always, our organization couldn't have become the valued resource that it
is without our members. Post your questions, voice your concerns and share
your experiences with your fellow members. Our lists are "What YOU make
them!" Share with fellow members via the lists. Private, "Off-Net"
communications are always OK but sharing via the lists is what keeps our
service alive and vibrant. Send your responses to the lists and if you
haven't written in a while, find a moment to share your USNA experiences
with all 2,516 members of our wonderful USNA-Net family.

Go Navy - Beat army!

A special message from your Moderators...

It's time again to remind our members that all of you should be using
up-to-date AntiV1RUS software on your computers. That is your first line of
defense against infection via email attachments.

Secondly, you should make it a habit to NEVER open an attachment to email,
even from people you know, unless you are absolutely certain that the
attachment contains something you are expecting and is from a trusted source
in an email which tells you what the attachment contains, like pictures or
documents and such.

Email borne V1RUSES are getting smaller and more prolific. We routinely
receive as many as 6 to 10 per day at USNA-Net addressed to our lists or to
us personally, since we are in so many address books of so many parents
around the world. Our USNA-Net lists constantly monitor our lists' emails
for ALL attachments and remove them before any message is sent to our lists.
But we want our members to be aware that all email listservers do NOT have
such software in place. They rely upon limiting the size of attachments to
prevent a member of their list from spreading a V1RUS to other members
because up until now, most V1RUSES were fairly large sized files and were
easily stopped.

The latest, ultra small virus (Badtrans.a) is only 13,312 bytes in length.
This is so small that it is possible for this V1RUS to be passed on by other
listservers to every one of their members just as easily as small graphical
images, maps and other such pictures which may be sent regularly to the list
by a few of their members. If you have ever received a message from a list
which included a small picture or icon in the message, just remember that it
could have been a V1RUS just as easily as that picture and you could have
been infected that quickly.

On all of our USNA-Net lists, ALL attachments (even those of only a few
bytes in size) are removed from our messages before they are sent to the
lists. You will never see Rich Text Messages with BOLD type or colored
backgrounds or messages which include small graphical images or icons on our
lists. ALL of this material is stripped before it is sent to you to protect
you from possible infection by an ultra small V1RUS pretending to be a small
picture file.

So if you receive an attachment, even from someone you know and trust, be
suspicious. If it comes embedded in an email, delete the email AND the
attachment before you even open it. And most importantly, make sure that
any other list to which you belong strips off ALL attachments to protect you
and all of their other members from infection.

Lastly, nothing beats having current AV software to protect you. Right now,
we know of at least a dozen members of our lists who still thought it
couldn't happen to them and are now infected with one or more of these
deadly viruses. Every day, they sign on to the internet and their computer
sends out hundreds of copies of the infection to every name in their address
book. We do all we can at USNA-Net to find and fix these members but
nothing can stop a virus in its tracks like current AV software can.

Make sure you are safe. Opening just one infected attachment can ruin your
computer and make you "persona non grata" with all of the friends and
relatives in your address book.

And just because you have an AV program doesn't mean you are safe UNLESS you
update it regularly - like once every week or two!

Be safe.
