The Midshipman Action Group is participating in the Freedom Harvest Canned
Good Drive as part of the United Day of Service on September 11th.  Proceeds
will be donated to soup kitchens, shelters, and needy families in the
Baltimore/Annapolis area.  Canned and other non-perishable food items can be
dropped off at various locations around Bancroft Hall, as well as in Drydock
Restaurant, the Laboon Ministry Center in Mitscher Hall, and at Graul's
Market across from the USNA Stadium.  Donations can be left in the boxes
from September 1st through September 11th.  Please help us reach our goal of
9,011 cans.

Fellow USNA-Net members,

Can it be a year already?  It was September of last year when USNA-Net first
began operations using our own private server.  We've grown a lot in that
time...

-    We've added over 2 million words of Advice and Support to our Archives.

-    We've added hundreds of photographs to our Photo Gallery.

-    There are new Wallpapers, Screen Savers and Postcards for our members
to use.

-    Our www.USNA-Net.org Web Site has grown to over 450 pages of
information.

-    We now host 17 local Parents Club Web Sites at no costs to the clubs.

-    We launched our Safe Harbor Program with over 750 volunteer families
registered to render assistance any hour of the day or night to Mids on
three continents.

-    We've added 650 new families to our membership with the Class of '06.

-    And Plebe Summer is again just a memory.  It's been a wonderfully
fulfilling year, indeed.

We were able to do all of this because of your generosity.  Last year when
we asked for your support, your response was overwhelming and in just six
days last September, we reached our Fund Raising goal.  While every hour of
time provided by all of those who volunteer to operate USNA-Net, either
directly or indirectly, is donated without compensation, we still incur real
operating expenses for our server and its connection to the Internet.  So we
will need your help again this September to help us defray our expenses and
keep USNA-Net on the Internet and fulfilling its Mission of "Parents Helping
Parents."

For those of you who have contributed in the past, we are asking that you do
it again - only once, this fall, for the next 12 months.  For those of our
members who are new to USNA-Net, especially those members of the Class of
'06 who were helped so much during Plebe Summer, we ask that you take a
moment to send in whatever you can afford.  So many of you have written to
express your thanks for all that our lists have meant to you as you left
your Plebes on I-Day and had to endure the rigors of separation with only
your friends on USNA-Net to help you get through the summer.  This is now
your opportunity to say thank you to the entire group with a donation to
help keep us going for another year.

Rest assured, we totally understand the restraints on family budgets.  It's
tough sometimes to come up with a few extra dollars.  If you can't send
something now, we understand.  BUT...  We like to think of ourselves as the
Internet equivalent of Public Television.  If you send in your donation, you
get to watch PBS.  If you don't, you still get to watch all of the same
programs but you just don't get to feel quite as good about it.  And "our"
PBS station will only ask for donations ONCE a year.  :>)

You can find all of the details about how to donate on our web site's main
page by clicking on the blue DONATE button in the middle of the page.  We
have published our ANNUAL budget there for your information as well.

On-line donations via our secure server may be made using your Visa or
Mastercard with total security and absolute privacy.  If you prefer, there

Thank you to the members who have sent in a donation so far to help offset
our operating expenses for the coming year.  Your generosity is very much
appreciated.  It is truly heartwarming to know that you realize just how
much USNA-Net has meant for you and your family and want to insure it's
continuation for the next 12 months.

So far, we've received $4,390 in donations.  We just passed 70% of our fund
raising goal for the year.  If just a few more of you go to the web site and
click on the "Donate On-Line" button in the middle of the main page, we'll
attain our goal in record time.  It only takes a minute to send us something
using Visa or Mastercard and the process is totally secure, using the
highest level of encryption possible.

Remember all those days during your Plebe Summer when you lived for the next
email from USNA-Net?  How about sharing just a few dollars in support of our
organization in order to insure that it continues for the Class of '07 and

On behalf of our entire membership of over 2,500 Families, USNA-Net wishes
to extend our most gracious and heartfelt thanks for each and every one of
our members who sent in a donation for our 2nd Annual Fund Raiser.

We have reached our goal of $6,250 in just SIX days and will be able to
continue with yet another year of uninterrupted operation, providing all of
our members with the very best in Advice and Support between parents of USNA
Midshipmen available anywhere on the Internet.

being added in the coming year;  we will be able to continue to maintain our
already huge archives of email advice which currently hold almost 9 Million

members who use it regularly;  we will be able to continue our Safe Harbor
Program for the benefit of all Mids regardless of whether or not their

continue the operation of our many lists, providing daily advice and support
for our members.

We couldn't have done it without your support.  Thanks to all who took the

Notice the poor grammar and the improper use of certain words.

This is a carrier message for the KLEZ VIRUS and will infect your machine if
you open it.

DON"T BE FOOLED BECAUSE IT SEEMS TO HAVE COME FROM SOMEONE YOU KNOW & TRUST
!!!  The Klez virus selects a name at random from the infected computer's
address book and uses that address as the FAKE "From" address on all of the
copies it sends out.

REMEMBER USNA-NET DOES NOT SEND OUT ATTACHMENTS !!!  Our server is incapable
of passing one through.  Since the attachments are the actual virus, if you
don't open the attachment, you won't get the infection.

A safer method is to ALSO have antivirus software running and up to date.

AT LEAST A DOZEN OR MORE OF OUR MEMBERS ARE CURRENTLY INFECTED with one or
more viruses.  Don't say it isn't you because these members have been
infected for weeks or even months.  Every time they turn on their computers
I get a copy of this or that virus - more than a dozen each day.

Please install an antivirus program today.  It's possibly YOU who is sending
out these terrible attachments to all our Navy Family, everyone in YOUR
address book.  Do your part.  Do it today.

I have received many questions about the recent flurry of email messages
with short subjects, sometimes no text inside the message and with
attachments.

For the benefit of all our members, please read this in its entirety.

A relatively new V1RUS has been circulating as an attachment to email.  It
is called Klez and it usually "appears" to come from someone you know in a
short email, sometimes with nothing in the body of the message.  Klez is NOT
from the person it says it is from.

It arrives in an attachment.   You get infected by opening the infected
attachment. And if it is not detected in time, it will destroy other files
on your computer, crippling it a little at a time until on a trigger date,
twice a year, it will erase all of the files and software on your computer's
hard drive.  This computer equivalent of a lobotomy will reduce YOUR
computer to a $1,000 paperweight.  It WILL happen.  Please don't wait to
check.  If you're infected, your computer could stop working at any time
without any notice and there is nothing anyone can do to restore it once it
is gone.

Here's how the virus works.  Once you open an infected email, the virus uses
a name it selects at random from the infected computer's address book as the
FROM address and send copies of itself out to everyone in the infected
computer's address book.  Therefore, if you have corresponded with someone
who subsequently gets the virus and you are in their address book, the virus
might use YOUR address as the from address on the new copies it sends out
even though YOU don't have the virus.

You have seen several of these viruses attempt to post themselves to our
lists in the past few days.  They look like empty messages.  In fact, they
WERE virus laden email, sent by an infected member to our lists but our
server software has stripped the attachments (which contain the virus) and
discarded them, leaving only the empty (and totally innocent) carrier email
to be sent on to our members.  If it weren't for our software on our
USNA-Net server, you would all have received several copies of this deadly
virus in the past several days.  USNA-Net lists are SAFE.  Not all mailing
lists use this software.  You should be very careful to not participate in
mailing lists which do not strip attachments before sending them to the
lists.  If you receive any sort of picture file, background, HTML or Rich
Text message from a mailing list, they are NOT stripping attachments and you
CAN get viruses from their email.  Please be careful.

Now for one last item...

There are still about twenty members of our lists who HAVE the Klez virus at
this very moment.  Since the virus fakes the return address, there is no way
to determine who sent them but I receive at least 12 to 18 such viruses
EVERY DAY.  I have good protection (Sandi and I use McAffee AV software) but
what I just can't understand is how any adult could operate in today's
world, sending/receiving email and connecting to the Internet while not
checking their computer for viruses - not using good, up-to-date AV software
all the time.  Yet as you read this, at least 20 of our members are doing
just that.  They are infected and are unknowingly spreading the virus to all
of us who are in their address books.

You see, as Moderator, I'm probably in several thousand address books, so
every time one of you gets infected, I'm among the first to get another copy
of the virus from YOU.  Please, if you don't have (or don't know if you
have) AntiVirus software installed on your Windows based computer, get it
today and get it installed before you infect everyone in your address
book!!!

It's not enough to just have AV software installed and running.  It must be
current and up-to-date with the latest information on the latest versions of
these viruses.  If you bought it a year ago and never updated it since, you
could actually contract the latest variant of Klez and you wouldn't even
know you were infected until it was too late.  Updates can be downloaded
from your AV software supplier for free but you have to do it and do it at
least every two weeks.

It's time each of you acted responsibly.  Please protect your computer.  For
YOUR sake and the safety of others with whom you correspond.

"All,

Our current FONA procedures and policies have led to confusion in several
instances.  I'd like to clarify the issues and we will revise the
instruction to reflect the same.

FONA passes will be issued to parents of Midshipmen without regard to home
of record.  In addition, their is no requirement for frequency of visits.
Simply by virtue of having a son or daughter in the Brigade entitles parents
to a FONA pass.  Company Officers are required to submit necessary data
using the template provided by the USNA Security Office.  Incomplete or
incorrectly filled out spreadsheets will be returned, resulting in
processing delays.

Rental cars will be handled in one of two ways:

1) A parent in possession of a FONA pass for their POV who travels to USNA
via rental car should bring their FONA pass with them.  They should present
their identification, rental agreement and FONA pass to the clerk at Pass &
ID and a temporary vehicle pass will be issued for the length of their
visit.

2) A parent who travels to USNA solely via rental vehicle will be issued a
FONA pass on which the vehicle information will be labeled "Rental."  Gate
sentries may request the rental agreement and driver's license to verify
access.

Company Officers will be the authorizing official for all Midshipmen parent
FONA passes.  Only PARENTS of midshipmen may apply for and be issued FONA
passes.  Other family members, fiancies, and girl/boyfriends are not
eligible.  In the event a non-parent relative is acting in a non-loco
parentis  capacity or a non-parent is the guardian of a midshipman, contact
the Security Officer.  Company Officers shall not authorize FONA passes for
their own families or acquaintances nor for those of the Company SEL."

A quick phone call to Davor (their 800 number is listed in our Site Index on
our web site) revealed the following OFFICIAL information...

1.    Davor has taken MOST but not all of the Plebes' photos.  Some will be
taken/retaken in October because for one reason or another a few Plebes were
missed.

2.    All Proof for photos already taken will be mailed out by September
24th.  You should allow a week for delivery and soooooo....  If you don't
have your proofs by September 30th you should call the 800 number and
inquire about them.   Please do not call before then as the proofs will
probably still be in the mail.

3.    The proofs for about 1,125 Plebes were mailed over the past couple of
weeks.  This means that some of you have them and others are still in
transit.  It also means that about 100 Plebes have yet to have their photos
taken and will be given the opportunity to be photographed in October.
Alert your Plebe if they haven't had their photos taken yet.

4.    This information is only about Plebe Proofs.  Firsties and other Mids
have yet to have their photographs taken.  Those sittings will be happening
in October.

Just a short note about Fund Raising...

It was noticed that the West-Point.Org is again raising money for the
support of their organization.  This time they are asking for $106,000 for
the next six months.  Last time it was $111,000 for the past six months or
$217,000 annually.

PLEASE NOTE...

WP.Org and the over 120 mailing lists it supports are not USNA-Net !!!  We
do not receive any of the money they raise for the use of West Point Alumni
and Parents.

We ran USNA-Net's Annual Fund Raiser beginning on September 1st and raised
our entire ANNUAL budget of $6,250 in just six days thanks to our many
generous members.  As we promised, we will NOT be asking for funding for our
lists again until next September.

All of USNA-Net's web sites and mailing lists...  USNA-Net, USNA-Family,
USNA-Plebe, USNA-Sports, USNA-Prayer and USNA-Info (plus USNA-07, a new list
for incoming '07 members) are totally supported and funded through that ONE
Annual Fund Raiser and we are NOT asking for money again at this time.

By sending out this little reminder, we hope to avoid confusion for those
members who may have heard about the WP-Org fund raiser and were wondering.
This is their Semi-Annual attempt by West Point Alumni to raise money for
the support of their 24,000+ Alumni and Parent members.

Please know that USNA-Net is fully funded for the coming year and does not
need any additional monies.  Thank you all again for your generous support
and many, many donations earlier this month.

We are proud to be the ONLY Naval Academy Web Site and Support Group funded
entirely by Parents of Midshipmen and Sponsor Parents.
