THE PATRIOT CUP

From: Steve Gish, Naval Academy parent

Re: FIRST ANNUAL USNA-NET ARMY-NAVY GOLF TOURNAMENT

General Introduction...
We would like to invite all of you to join us. No, it's not the Ryder Cup,
but maybe better because we get to play for it. As a parent of a new plebe
at the Naval Academy, I thought it would be fun to somehow get involved in
the build-up before the annual football game between Navy and Army. Since
they won't let us put on the pads and get on the field, the idea struck me
to have some sort of golf tournament pitting Navy vs. Army families,
Alumni, Faculty and Administration. I checked with those who might know,
and was told there is nothing like this going on yet, got some additional
feedback on what would be the best way to proceed, so here goes. A special
thanks goes to Mike & Sandi Zets of USNA-Net for their input and the use of
www.USNA-Net.org resources.

What...
The First Annual USNA-Net Navy-Army Golf Tournament.

Where...
(Here's the good news) At any course you choose. For the men's and women's
individual competition (details below), this will allow you to play when and
where you want if you are in a remote location or can't locate anyone else
to form a scramble team. If you wish to play in the "scramble" portion of
this (details below), it may force you to make contact with other parents
from "your" academy, and make arrangements as to time and location for your
group to play. It may be helpful to contact your local Parents Club. Your
group would ideally be 4 people, but obviously sometimes people can't show
up as scheduled, or whatever, so if you are down to 3 or 2, you can still
turn in a score.

When...
On any date you select, sometime between today and November 25. That is well
before the BIG GAME, but, given weather issues in many parts of the country
(and globe), it's best to get the round in before early December. Results
won't be announced until the time of the BIG GAME in early December.

Cost...
(More good news) None, other than whatever you normally have to pay to go
golfing at your local course.

Who can compete...
Anyone who is a (1) a graduate of either Academy, or is (2) the parent,
grandparent, sibling or other family member of a student either currently
attending or who has graduated from one of the academies, or is (3)
currently a faculty member or in the administration at either institution,
or (4) a spouse of anyone otherwise mentioned above. I am too much of a
rookie parent to know, but I'll assume there will be gray areas too numerous
to describe. If you feel your relationship puts you within the "family" of
either Academy, roughly in accordance with the above guidelines, you are
in. Your call. Read on.

Format...
This will have something for people of all levels of ability and will also
allow participation by those who do not know or don't live close to other
academy parents. There will be three categories: 1. A scramble; 2. Men's
best gross scores, averaged, adjusted according to the rating on the course
you play. 3. Women's best gross scores, just like the men. The school that
wins 2 (or more) of the 3 categories wins.

Details...
Category 1: A "scramble" is where 4 people tee off in a foursome. This can
be men or women or any combination. Women use women's tees. All four are
all on the same team. They all hit drives. The team decides which ball is in
the best spot. The other 3 simply pick up their golf balls, go over to that
"best spot" and all four players hit from that location (dropping within one
club length of that spot). For the scramble competition, winter rules apply,
meaning you can nudge the ball around to get a good lie. After all players
have hit a second shot, the team again determines which ball now lies in a
"new" best spot. The 3 other players simply "pick up" and go to that best
spot, and again, all 4 hit from there.

Order of hitting may be changed on any given shot. Strategies may emerge as
to who goes first and / or last according to the desires of the team. On the
green, do the same thing. For example, assume the best approach shot lands
10 feet from the hole. All other balls get picked up, and all players putt
from that spot (or within about an inch) The team then records only 1 score
per hole. Then on to the next hole.

Rule: You must use each player's drive at least 4 times during the round. In
other words, if there is a dominant player, his or her drive cannot be used
more than 6 times if there is a foursome, or 10 times if there is a
threesome. If you can only find one other partner for this, do a two-ball
scramble, but use at least 6 drives for each player. We will take all team
scores, and average them, adjusted for course rating as set forth below. You
can only play on one scramble team.

Categories 2 and 3 are simply the average of a selected number of the best
scores submitted from a normal golf round by any individual who wants to
submit a score. This would be a separate golf round from when the scramble
gets played. At your local course, men play from "regular" tees and women
play from women's tees. USGA rules apply. Handicaps do not apply. We will
need to know the rating for your course (or the "par" if you don't know the
rating) from the tees you are using so I can make adjustments to arrive at a
fair result. If your local course is playing summer rules, or winter rules,
play accordingly.

Commit ahead of time that a certain round will be the one that counts for
this competition, play the round, and turn your score in. In other words,
don't just pick from among your best rounds that month. Players are
encouraged to participate in both the individual competition and the
scramble, but that of course, each must be during a different round.

Regarding how many scores will be tabulated and averaged under this "gross
score" category, it will depend on which school turns in the fewest scores.
We will take the top 50% of that number of scores for each school.
Example: Lets say school "A" turns in 200 scores and school "B" turns in 80.
We will use the top 80 scores for each school, then take the top 50% of
those scores. That way as many players as want, may participate, but if a
large amount of people with lower ability from one school participate, that
won't artificially skew the average for either school, and we will actually
be able to identify the winning school. Why only tabulate the top 50%?
While this is friendly competition, it is, still, competition, with serious
(?) bragging rights at stake. Remember, this limitation only applies to the
gross score on the normal golf round. In the scramble, ALL scores are
tabulated, averaged, needed, encouraged and welcomed!

Needed information...
When your competition is completed, contact us at golf@USNA-Net.org with the
following results, or with questions, prior to November 20th.

For the scramble portion, each team designates one person to send us the
information. When you email us your score, we will need to know:

Names of team members.
    - The school for which you are playing
    - The name and location of the golf course
    - The rating and par for the course for the tees you used. (No USGA
rating? Tell us par for the course and we'll adjust accordingly.)
    - The team score.
    - Best or Worst shot, situation, predicament or moment. Tell us a
brief story.

For the individual stroke portion, we will need:
    - Your name
    - Your gender
    - The school for which you are playing
    - Your score
    - The name and location of the golf course
    - The rating and par for the course

All scores for the three categories will be adjusted compared to the rating
for the course played. That way, it doesn't matter what the par for your
course is. Obviously there will be many differences that cannot be accounted
for, but there are two responses to that. First, those will probably even
themselves out and second, it isn't going to be perfect, so let's not get
bogged down in minutia.

You do not need to sign up ahead of time. But you do need to turn in a score
if you begin a round, committed to the competition, no matter the result.
Duty, Honor, Commitment.

HAVE FUN !!!!!!!!

A special message from your Moderators...

Please remember that we operate many different lists for the use and
enjoyment of all of our very diverse membership. With over 2,500 families
subscribed to USNA-Net lists, there are many members who do not wish to
participate in some aspects of our discussions, so we've established
different lists for differences in interests.

We have "USNA-Plebe" for all things related to Plebes and Plebe issues.

We have "USNA-Prayer" for religious things and prayer requests.

We have "USNA-Sports" for EVERYTHING related to any Navy Sporting event,
including Tickets, Tailgating, Road Trips, Driving Directions,
Accommodations, etc.

We have "USNA-Family" for those things of General Interest to everyone and
which do not fall into the above categories.

We will be begin subscribing Class of '07 parents soon and they will be
placed on our "USNA-07" list until our '06 Plebe Parents have experienced
Herndon. After which all Plebe Parents are combined into the Family and
Plebe lists.

We have from time to time used our "USNA-Info" list to address matters of
concern with specific sub-sets of members for informational purposes.

And lastly, we use "USNA-Net" as our Master (Announce Only) List to reach
every member regardless of any other list(s) to which they may belong.

By using the correct address for the appropriate list, you do us all a favor
by insuring that your message (or answer) goes ONLY to those members who
wish to receive it. That way our members get the maximum help and
information with the minimum of stuff in which they are not interested.
Please do your part by sending your questions and answers to the correct
list.

Speaking of excess mail... Please remember that Personal and Commercial
Recommendations or Endorsements are not permitted on any of our lists.
There are just too many of us for us to allow this to go on. If each of us
sent just ONE unsolicited endorsement just once per semester, we would all
find 14 of them in our mailboxes EVERY day, 365 days per year. With that
much unsolicited "junk" email going out to all of our members, most would
soon tire of having to delete them all and leave the lists. If members
leave, who will answer questions? Who will provide the Advice and Support
that you've all come to depend upon??? We can't drive members away. So
please remember to keep those great deals off the lists. It's not that we
don't appreciate that you wish to share them but one becomes two, two become
a dozen and we just can't tolerate that much extra unsolicited email.

Support your fellow members by addressing your questions to the proper list
and reading and following all of our Rules, all of the time.

Thanks so much for your continued cooperation.

To all members of our USNA-Net lists...

Recently a few of our members have received messages telling them to search
their computers for a file named "jdbgmgr.exe" and if they find it, they are
supposed to delete it because it is some form of v irus.

THIS MESSAGE IS A HOAX and will cause you to delete a file needed for the
operation of your computer. Please see the McAffee's HOAX site for complete
information on what this is and why you should NOT delete this file.

http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99436

You can also read up on dozens of other HOAXES at...

http://vil.mcafee.com/hoax.asp

If you already deleted this site, you can follow the directions in the page
first listed above to restore it but be warned, it is not a simple procedure
and should probably be left to experts.

Remember to never follow the advice of an email which comes to you telling
you to delete some file from your computer until you check the HOAX sites
for verification. Most times, these messages are bogus and are just as much
a threat to you and your computer as any virus is.

A special message from your Moderators...

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I have to address this problem
again.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT ALL OF YOU READ THIS MESSAGE COMPLETELY !!!

We still have MANY members who are apparently infected with any one of
several different COMPUTER V1RUSES !!! This is a serious problem and we
need EVERY members to install current ANTIV1RUS (AV)software on their
computers. Let me say this so that even the most computer illiterate of you
understand this...

IF YOU DON'T HAVE CURRENT AV SOFTWARE INSTALLED AND RUNNING ON YOUR
COMPUTER, YOU ARE PROBABLY INFECTED !

Is that plain English or what? Don't tell me you know you're not infected
unless your AV software was updated within the past six days. If you don't
have AV installed, you have no way of knowing.

There are no excuses, today. Use AV software or disconnect from the
Internet and go back to watching television. Am I upset? Sure I am. In
the past few days, I have been receiving an average of 25 virus laden emails
EVERY DAY and can't determine which of you wonderful members is the sending
party because of the way these new viruses work by FAKING the return
address. Our infected members have even sent out several viruses using MY
email address as the return address.

Let me assure you I have and use AV software every minute that my computer
is turned on. You will never receive a message from either Sandi or me OR
our listservers that contains an attachment.

You can all do us ALL a BIG FAVOR if you will go into your email program and
do three things...

1.) Change the preference setting in your email software to NOT add the
address of everyone to whom you write into your address book automatically.

2.) Please remove my address and the addresses of our lists from your
address book. That way when you DO get infected, you will not send me or
the lists a copy of YOUR infection. I don't want it. Nor do I want to have
to read and delete three or four dozen BOUNCES which you generate during a
day as your computer tries unsuccessfully to send the virus to our lists.
Our server blocks ALL attachments. And...

3.) Go through the entries in your address book and clear out all those
addresses that you don't need to have in there. After a year or two, you'd
be amazed at how many addresses can accumulate. About a year ago, I cleaned
out my address book and reduced the number of names from over 3,500 to just
over 100. You'd also be amazed at how much faster my email program runs now
that I don't have that overhead to look through every time I start it up.

Please remember that it isn't just Sandi and me who are plagued by all of
these copies of viruses, there are a lot of regular members who are also
being attacked EVERY TIME you turn on YOUR infected computer.

We have to ask... NO! We demand that all of our current members insure
that they are virus free and that their AV software is current and running
at all times. New AV software may be obtained at any computer store or
major Office Supply chain for as little as $25. That's a small price to pay
for the safety and security of your computer.

Please do your part to stop this plague upon our Navy Family !!!!

A special message from your Moderators...

Please be aware of a simple fact...

USNA-Net's lists and mailing list server are incapable of sending ANY
attachment to anyone. If you have received a copy of a V1RUS, it has come
from some one with whom YOU have corresponded - a friend, a relative, even
perhaps your own Mid, but it cannot come from our lists.

Asking to be uns ubscribed from our service will not cure those infected
people out there who already have YOUR name in their infected computer's
address book. All it will accomplish will be to cut you off from other
parents who's help, advice and support you have come to rely upon.

To those out there that are absolutely certain it can't happen to them...
Viruses are a fact of life on the Internet. Just as you aren't permitted to
drive without a license and car insurance, you shouldn't be permitted to
have an email address without proof of valid AntiVirus software.
Unfortunately, there is no law against stupidity and some of you insist on
turning on your computer and irresponsibly sending and receiving email
without AV software.

BE RESPONSIBLE ! DO YOUR PART ! Don't be the reason that all of your
friends and relatives (even your Mid) have their computers destroyed through
your indifference.

After all, how would you feel if your Mid failed a course because the virus
that YOU gave him was the reason that his term paper was destroyed the night
before it was due???

OK. We've worked a deal with Amazon.com. Normally, we don't permit the
offering of items For Sale or to be Given Away on our lists but as
Moderators we feel this is important enough to mention.

We have arranged for our members to purchase a copy of McAffee's V!RUSscan

available and normally retails for $49.99. $30.00 Savings. But wait! It
gets better. You can print out a Mail In Rebate Coupon for $20.00 which
means that all you pay is the normal shipping for your own copy of the
latest V!RUS Protection available.

To take advantage of the terrific offer, please visit to our web site at
www.USNA-Net.org and click on the display ad on the right side of the main
page. It will take you to this SPECIAL OFFER.

The best part, USNA-Net receives $1.00 for every package ordered.

You get the latest AV software available for just the cost of shipping and
we get a donation from Amazon for your trouble.

Please hurry, the special rebate offer won't last long.

NOW WHAT'S YOUR EXCUSE FOR NOT HAVING ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE ??? We can't make
it any easier unless we come out and install it for you. Won't you PLEASE
help wipe out this plague today? You don't even have to get out of your
seat. :>)

<<< Why can't I see the Ad for the Free AV Software on your web site?? Am
I doing something wrong? >>>

No, You're not doing anything wrong. Your service Provider (AOL) is
cheating you out of service.

OK, perhaps that a bit strong but the browser software that they provide you
is set at the factory to NOT update your view of ANY web site unless you ask
it to do so.

Depress and hold the Control Key while you Click on the "Refresh" or
"Reload" in the top browser menu. This will force the browser to go to the
Web Site and download a NEW copy of the page.

Here's the reason behind this little maneuver...

A long time ago when computer were slow and modems were even slower, the
guys who designed the browser programs needed a way to make surfing the
internet as fast as possible. They realized that most people go to a web
site and surf around on different links using the "Back" button a lot to
return to the home page of a particular web site. If you were forced to
download that same page every time you went back to it, you would spend a
lot of time waiting for the "already visited" page to reload.

The programmers speeded things up a lot by having your home computer store a
copy of every page it visits on your hard drive in a temporary file. Then
when you asked the browser to go to a certain page, the browser software
would first look to see if it already had that page in your computer, stored
on your hard drive. If it did, it would display the page from your Hard
Drive at almost lightening speed instead of downloading all that data and
graphic information all over again. It was called Cache memory and worked
really well to speed things up.

But there is a small flaw in the process. If you never ask the browser to
download an updated copy of the page, every time you visit the same page,
you will see the same old page that you saw the very first time you went to
the site. It could be months or even years old. So you have to force your
software to "Refresh" or "Reload" a NEW copy of the page when things change.
You have no way of knowing WHEN things on a web page might change, so you
may very well be missing a lot of new stuff on ANY page you visit.

The good news is that you can set your browser to automatically get fresh
content every so many days or weeks or even EVERY time you visit a page.
This is set up in your browser's "Preferences" or "Options," usually under
"Tools" or "My AOL."

So do a "Refresh/Reload" OFTEN and enjoy.

Mike,

I should mention, my Plebe sent me a V1RUS from his school address. The
thing was that when talking to him today he didn't send me anything. When I
pointed this out, he ran his V1RUS protection. I was fortunate. I update
weekly and my software caught it. I don't download often, but opened this
only email attachment because it was from my son and I checked the address
several times before I started. You might want to send a warning to others.

-------- End of Original Message -----

There you have it ladies and gentlemen. First hand testimony. Whether you
want to believe it or not, Mids are one of the biggest sources of new
V1RUSES around. Even though their computers come with AV software, it was
only new when they got the computer. For some that may be several years
ago. If they haven't bought the annual update contracts, their software
could be very badly out of date. If they don't set the software to do
automatic updates or forget to do the manual updates in the first year, they
are at risk. And Mids send and receive tons of email among themselves and
back and forth to home, friends, girlfriends, boyfriends, you name it. They
send it. They read it. It's unfortunate but its the pace at the Academy
which makes them vulnerable.

An early Holiday gift idea might be AV software that isn't out of date.

Get one for you and another for your Mid. You won't regret it. It might
just save you Hundreds or even Thousands on new computer hardware and
software.

A special message from your Moderators...

The following message was received this morning and we are passing it along
to our entire membership. Many of you already receive this mailing list
but many new USNA-Net members may wish to take advantage of the offer. It's
FREE.

It operates a bit differently than our USNA-Sports list in which individual
members may write to the list. This is the "Official" USNA-Sports NEWS and
INFORMATION mailing list and is "Receive Only." Subscribers may not write
TO the list but will receive MANY emails each day about all Navy Sports,
from Archery to Wrestling, Interviews to Editorials, all about every facet
of Navy Sports.

Be warned, this is a high volume list. Since the beginning of this month,
this list has sent out over 125 messages in just 24 days. BUT... If you're
a Navy Sports Fanatic, this is a "MUST HAVE" list for you.

USNA-Net.org does not administer this list. It is administered and sent to
you DIRECTLY by the Naval Academy. USNA-Net.org is not involved. Any
questions about or problems with your subscription should be sent directly
to their Sports Information Officer, Scott Strasemeier, at
sstrasem@usna.edu.

A special message from your Moderators...

With the onset of cooler temps, we thought that you needed more than a
simple time and temp icon from WeatherUnderground on our web site, so...

Now, when you visit our web site at www.USNA-Net.org, you just need to click
on the "USNA-Cam & Weather" icon in the middle of the main page for the
latest view of the City Docks AND the complete current weather including a
current (Updated hourly) Satellite View as the background of the panel. We
have a local radar image, extended forecasts, two satellite views and all of
the current stats, like Dew Point, Wind Chill, Moon Phase, Sun & Moon Rise &
Set times... All sorts of data specific to our new Annapolis Weather
Station.

This is a custom service that we've programmed into our web site for our
members. It comes complete without any advertisements or pop ups for you to
deal with. We bring it up in its own window so that you can leave it up on
your monitor (minimized or not) all day to check what the weather looks like
where your Mid is spending his/her day.

As usual the Camera view updates every 15 seconds and now the all the
weather data downloads directly from NOAA a few minutes before the hour, all
day long, 24/7.

It will be fun to watch as temps dip and wind chills make walking between
classes a bit more of a challenge. Remember the snow last winter? With our
new Doppler Radar you will be able to watch it happen this winter - from
Showers to Storms to Blizzards (?). We'll be adding more data shortly, like
Daily Record Highs, Lows, Rainfall and Snowfall to give you all the best,
most reliable weather available from any source.

Please note that this is not some corny weather icon link to a commercial
service. It's our very own USNA Weather Report with hourly data taken
directly from the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA)
national weather database. We have purchased the custom server software to
do this and look forward to it becoming a regular part of your day...
visiting our site and checking the weather where YOUR Mid lives. Remember,
this new weather service is a unique feature of USNA-Net, The Original Naval
Academy Parents Network.

Also coming soon will be daily email weather advisories for members only who
want the Annapolis weather and forecast delivered directly into their mail
boxes each morning. And at other times, when bad weather threatens, we will
post automated email advisories to those on this new USNA-Net list. Details
will follow as soon as we have it all worked out.

Enjoy the new service.
