A special message from your Moderators...

To all,

The missing girl message is a HOAX, do not send it to anyone else.

Please remember that chain letters of this sort are strictly prohibited on
the USNA-Net lists. When you send something to everyone in your address
book - and the USNA-Net lists are in your address book, you will be sending
the email to the lists.

The really bad part of this is that 99.9% of the time, those emails that you
get in your Inbox, the ones that ask you to send to everyone you know, will
be a hoax.

The missing girl one is a hoax. Check out:

http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/children/penny.htm

My advice to you ALL is to check anything you are tempted to send along to
others and verify that it is the truth. That includes anything from a
missing child email ... to the "you will be sent money for every address
you send this to" ,,, to those about Congress passing a law to charge you
for every email ... to alerts about viruses. There are several good
websites out there that you can check to do this. The one I use is:

www.snopes.com

You might want to bookmark this site in your Favorites and go to it whenever
you are tempted to send something to everyone you know.

A special message from your Moderators...

Again this year, we wish to extend our sincere thanks to those who have
served our country on the occasion of Veteran's Day.

To view our tribute to Veterans, please visit

http://www.neonap.org/veteran.html.

It is a special page called "What is a Vet?" on our Northeast Ohio Naval
Academy Parents Club web site honoring all veterans with a special essay
written by Father Denis Edward O'Brien, USMC.

Feel free to pass this page's address to anyone who you feel would like to
share a moment this Veteran's Day in recognizing the sacrifice of the men
and women who have served our country.

Be sure to have the volume set so you can hear the background music which
plays while you read the message.

A special message from your Moderators...

For those of you who have been on the lists for some time, you may remember
this line of conversation from last year. It has become tradition for
Americans to send letters to American Servicemen in the Armed Forces each
year at the Holidays.

Because of the current status of affairs makes the sending of actual cards
and letters too dangerous, the folks at "Dear Abby" have set up a secure web
site for you this year in conjunction with U.S. Department of Defense, and
the U.S. Department of the Navy. The site will forward your messages to
servicemen serving their country overseas at Christmas.

To participate in this year's efforts to show your appreciation to all the
men and women who will not be able to be home for the holidays, log on to

http://anyservicemember.navy.mil/About.html and send your message.

If you have any questions, please write to your Moderators at
sysop@usna-net.org rather than to the lists. We encourage your
participation in this wonderful program.

Thanks for your cooperation.

A special message from your Moderators...

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Please allow me the opportunity to remind our members that it is strictly
against our Rules of Operation to use our lists to advertise items WANTED or
FOR SALE. It is also a violation to ask for FAVORS of any kind.

With over 2,500+ families subscribed to our USNA-Family list, it is all too
easy to mention that you need a copy of a video tape or have tickets for
sale, need to buy something or need a teensy favor. But the fact of the
matter is that this sort of message is really SPAM, unsolicited commercial
email, offering to sell or buy something or asking for an item or favor to
be donated.

We all get way too much SPAM as it is and we cannot allow USNA-Net to become
another source of junk email filled with special offers or requests for
stuff. This is the reason we created our USNA-Net Classified Ads and our
members have been very successful in using them. As I write this, there
are many members asking to buy A/N tickets, others offering to sell them
along with Condos, Cars and Trucks, Care Package Providers, and several
requests for video taped copies of events on the Yard over the past year.

Please visit our Classifieds often and PLEASE resist the urge to ask for
favors or advertise items Wanted or For Sale on our lists. We have too many
members who legitimately complain to your Moderators about the excess volume
of "Junk" email they already receive from our lists.

If too many members, get fed up with the daily barrage of email, they will
leave the lists and without members, who will Mentor our junior members or
the incoming Class of '07??? Please don't spoil it for those who are yet to
come. We need to remain focused on our Mission - Supplying Advice and
Support to other Parents and not allow our lists to degenerate into Chat
Rooms or Flea Market Bulletin Boards.

Thanks so much for your understanding and continued cooperation.

Respectfully,

It is with a great deal of pride and a rousing round of congratulations that
we have the pleasure of announcing the newest addition to our on-line
community of Parents Club Web Sites...

www.USNA-UtahPC.org - The Utah Naval Academy Parents Club

Kevin Dolan, a Utah Parent and husband of Club President, Lisa Dolan, has
done a magnificent job of putting together a vibrant and fact-filled web
site for the Utah Club members. Please be sure to visit the site and drop
their "webmaster" a note of congratulations on his efforts. It takes lots
of work to get a site like this up and running. Be sure to send Kevin an
email with some positive reinforcement on a job well done. Bravo Zulu,
Kevin.

We at USNA-Net are especially proud of this latest Parents Club web site
because we, too, have had a small part in its premier, today. Kevin
remembered that USNA-Net has offered to provide free hosting for any club
web site and contacted us as he was about to publish the site. We
registered the domain for the club and set up the server before we left on
Friday morning for the U of Conn football game. He had the site up and
running Sunday morning.

The launch of this new Utah Parents' Club web site brings the number of club
web sites that USNA-Net hosts to 18 of the 33 sites of which we are aware.
That's more than half of the all Parents' Club web sites in existence that
are hosted completely without expense to the Club by USNA-Net. It is
through the kindness and generosity of our members that we are able to do
this for Clubs from Washington State to Boston, Florida to Wisconsin. To
see a complete list of all Club Web Sites (perhaps one for a club near you)
go to our www.USNA-Net.org and click on the "Parents Club Web Sites" link in
the main menu on the left of the main page.

If your club currently pays for hosting or domain registration and wishes to
move your web site to our servers, OR your club is looking to publish their
first web site, for free - no strings attached, just drop us a line at
websites@USNA-Net.org and we'll be happy to go into the details.

Congrats again to the Utah Parents' Club on the publication of their NEW web
site.

A special message from your Moderators...

This past weekend Sandi and I met with Lt. Ross MacKenzie Jr., Class of '91,
and son of the author of "Brief Points" which is, of course, THE
authoritative guide to the Naval Academy for Parents of Midshipmen. Most of
you have at least heard about this book and a large number of you already
own a dog-eared copy that you use often to answer your questions about the
Academy. Ross is in the process of revising and updating his dad's book for
the Third Edition which will hopefully be ready for publication in time for
I-Day next year.

The original edition was first published in 1993 and a Second Edition was
published in 1996. A lot has changed in the ensuing six years and Sandi and
I were asked to contribute to this revision. We've spent hours going
through the existing edition adding comments and perspective for the
upcoming revision. It is a really fun task and working with Ross has been a
real joy. Being a grad himself, he brings a truly fresh perspective on the
day to day life of a Midshipman. He is really dedicated to providing an
"accurate" portrayal of the Yard for Midshipman Parents and Friends of the
Naval Academy.

During our meeting, it quickly became obvious that our USNA-Net members
could also make significant contributions to this next edition. It was
agreed that Sandi and I should solicit input from our general membership on
the existing edition of "Brief Points" - what you liked; didn't like; what
can be eliminated; and what is missing.

So here's what we would like you to do...

Email your comments, suggestions, criticisms, contributions, whatever... to
briefpoints@USNA-Net.org. Be as brief or as verbose as you would like.
Sign the email or send it anonymously. Only Sandi and I will see it and we
are sworn to secrecy. We will compile your responses and forward them to
Ross for his consideration. We can't promise that all of your suggestions
will be used but I know that Ross will be VERY interested in all of your
input. He has vowed to make this the most useful and candid book possible.

Don't worry about being politically correct or that someone else may have
already submitted your idea. We want as much input as possible for this
project because, in the end, it will benefit YOU, the parents, and parents
yet to come. After all, "Brief Points" is YOUR book and now that you have
been exposed to the Academy, this is your opportunity to pass on your info
to the next reader of the guide. Who better???

So help us to tell it like it is. Do you have a word that isn't in the
glossary? What about Information on events or groups that are omitted?
What information was invaluable to you and absolutely MUST be kept in the
new edition? What do never what to see in print again? How about your
favorite recon story or urban legend? What information was the hardest for
you to find and understand? What secret about the Academy has your Mid let
you in on?? What unpublished tip kept you sane during the first week,
month, year???

We aren't looking to involve our lists in this discussion, so PLEASE send
your comments to briefpoints@usna-net.org (NOT to the lists) so that we can
compile them and pass them along to Ross. With 2,500+ members, we really
can make a significant contribution to this effort, but only if you take a
moment to send us your comments.

On behalf of Lt. MacKenzie and USNA-Net, we thank you for your time and for
helping us to make USNA-Net a real "Partner for Parents" on the Internet.

A special message from your Moderators...

Just a quick note to remind our members of a few things...

Procedures for what to do if Medical or Dental Assistance is required by a
Midshipman while at home (or traveling) on Leave may be found in our web
site's Site Index under "Medical Care While on Leave." You should brush up
on what to do, just in case. And don't forget that our Safe Harbor Program
answers the phone 24/7, if your Traveling Mid ever needs assistance.

Remember, too, that our Classified Ads have been going gangbusters for quite
some time now. We have been adding three and four ads PER DAY, mostly A/N
Tickets Wanted or For Sale. From what we have seen, we have brought dozens
of buyers and sellers together for Army/Navy Tickets plus lots of other
things. If you haven't checked them out, you're missing a lot of great
deals. Not only that, but you just might be the member who has a video that
another member needs, or some other WANTED that is posted. You never know
unless you look.

Lastly... We wanted to remind our entire membership to keep you eyes peeled
for the new crop of '07 Parents who will start turning up soon in your local
area. We will again be looking to find all of the new '07 Parents and
invite them to join our USNA-Net family. Just as each of you has been
helped by belonging to USNA-Net, we want to insure that as many '07 Parents
as possible find us and join our organization. Remember, it's free and it's
never too soon to go to the web site and click on the "How to Subscribe"
link in our main menu. We'll be forming our '07 list shortly and we're
already taking names of '07 parents in anticipation.

Thanks for your time and help.

A special message from your Moderators...

A special message from your Moderators...

It appears that we experienced a problem overnight with one of our
recipients resending previously transmitted messages. You weren't
experiencing De-Ja Vu. It was a run away mail server at texas.rr.com. We
believe that we've blocked the server from looping our old messages back to
us and the problem should be solved.

We apologize for the inconvenience but the problem was not with our
equipment or software. It was at another server on the Internet over which
we have no control.

Please just use the delete key with a bit of abandon this morning.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

A special message from your Moderators...

Wanted to remind everyone that our USNA-Net Classified Ads have been
extremely busy in the past several weeks as the A/N game approaches and
members prepare for the gift giving season. Yesterday alone I added seven
new ads. And this level of activity has been going like this for weeks.

While you may not be going to the Classified Ads, many, many other members
are. We have heard many reports from members recently that they have sold
the items offered in our Classified Ads and would I please take down their
ad?

So if you haven't been their on an almost daily basis, you should. Go to
our web site at www.USNA-Net.org and click on "Classifieds" in the main menu
on the left of the main page. We have tons of stuff wanted and for sale
from Free "Toe Covers" for Mids with foot casts at this time of year to
copies of "Video Tapes" to "Condos For Rent" to "Army/Navy Tickets" For
Sale.

If anyone you know is looking for one to a dozen tickets, our members have
them For Sale in our Classifieds. As of this morning, we had a total of 69
tickets advertised for sale. So if you or members of your local parents'
club or the Navy or Army Alumni Group in your area are looking for last
minute tickets, be sure to find them in our Classified Ads. Help out a
fellow member by buying from another USNA-Net member.

Thank you all for remembering our Rule against advertising anything directly
on the lists. By using our Classified Ads, you have all saved our lists
from hundreds of For Sale messages which just clog up our inboxes. Our
Classified Ads really WORK because you, our members, use them regularly. On
behalf of all of our members... Thank You!

Go Navy - Beat Army!!!

PS. If you're going to the A/N Game or looking for a special gift for
someone for the Holidays, don't forget that our On-Line Store has Red, While
and Blue Ribbon USNA-Mom Pins available. Show your USNA-Net colors so other
members in attendance will recognize you with your USNA-Mom Pin. Go to our
web site at www.USNA-Net.org and click on the On-Line Store graphic at the
bottom of the main page. USNA-Mom Pins and Blue Star Banners make
wonderful, inexpensive Holiday Gifts. (Proceeds help support USNA-Net.)

Just a reminder that you will find the "Official" procedure for obtaining
Medical or Dental Care while on Leave quoted in our USNA-Net Parents
Handbook. Look for the special icon on our Main Page at this time of year
or find it in on our web site (www.USNA-Net.org) in the Site Index under
(what else?) "Medical or Dental Care while on Leave."

AND...

Let's not forget that our Safe Harbor Toll Free Number is also posted on our
web site behind the Life Preserver Graphic on the main page. If you
haven't looked lately the number is 1-800-320-5373 (01). Make sure that at
least YOUR Mid has it in his wallet before he leaves Bancroft.

Remember it's for emergency assistance for ANY Midshipman while away from
the Yard - not just Member's Mids. Don't hesitate to call (24/7) when your
Mid (or any of his/her shipmates) has a need.

Happy Thanksgiving...

For those of you who are anxiously awaiting departures from BWI this
afternoon, at the suggestion of Linanne over in Monaco, I have installed a
link on the main page to BWI's Flight Status Information page on their site.
It's on the right just underneath the Safe Harbor Icon.

I hope this helps all of you expectant parents figure out what is going on
in Annapolis as your Mids prepare to come home for Thanksgiving.

Have a blessed day tomorrow.

A special message from your Moderators...

To each of our members families,

Sandi and I would like to take just a minute to wish each and every one of
our over 2,500 members of USNA-Net a Happy Thanksgiving. We all have many
things for which we might be thankful on this, the traditional, Norman
Rockwell holiday, filled with good food, good company and family reunited
across the miles.

But of all the things for which we are thankful, most of all, we are
thankful that we have each other here on USNA-Net. In the past year, we
have laughed together, cried together, and held each others' collective
hands when we needed each other. We have always been here for each other.
To share our love, our support, our advice. Our kindness and our
generosity. To freely lend a helping hand, a reassuring shoulder. To walk
along with a fellow member and talk things through when no one else would
understand.

For that, we all have reason to be truly thankful.

May you all have a blessed and happy Thanksgiving.

Mike & Sandi

A special message from your Moderators...

To end the discussion and guessing about what is and what is NOT permitted
into Giants Stadium, we have recreated the entire information packet which
accompanied each and every envelope of ticks to the Big Game.

This is a copy of the Official Information. We've included a Seating Chart,
the Times of various events of the day, Permitted Items, FORBIDDEN ITEMS,
Policies on Lost or Stolen Ticks and Directions to the Stadium.

Just go to the our main web page at www.USNA-Net.org and click on the
Stadium graphic on the right of the main page.

Hope this helps settle the discussions. Video Cameras are NOT permitted.

Happy Holidays to you all...
