A special message from your Moderators...

I want to add another RESOLUTION to our list for 2003...

Keep your mailbox as empty as possible.

In 2002, I received 34,728 Delivery Problem Notifications from your Internet
Service Providers telling me that a message our server sent to one of you
was not delivered. That's a average of 95+ messages each and every day of
the entire year. Our worst month was July (Plebe Summer) during which I
received 12,148 Delivery Problem Notices. That's 391 notices every day of
the month. (And you though you got a lot of email from our server! ) It has
gotten a lot better since but then traffic is a lot slower now than during
Plebe Summer. In December, we only received 1,212 Notices for a daily
average of 39 notices each day.

I'm NOT complaining. It's what comes with the job of Moderating a service
such as this with over 2,400 families signed up to one or more of our five
lists.

What you can do to help is to make sure that your mailbox isn't full. The
vast majority of the delivery problems come from two specific problems...
    MAILBOX FULL Notices and
    MAILBOX NOT FOUND Notices.

When you have too much mail in your mailbox, your ISP will no longer deliver
ANY mail until you delete some of the contents of your mailbox. (That means
that even mail from your Mid or your family is rejected, not just USNA-Net
mail.) Most ISPs impose a limit on the amount of email which it will retain
on its server for you. Once you reach that limit, all mail is rejected.

The other thing (which is not as big a problem but a problem nonetheless) is
that some of you will change your ISP or your email address during the
course of the year. Please make sure to send us a note telling us of your
old and new address. That way, we won't continue sending mail to the old
address long after it is closed.

If you plan on being away on vacation or whatever for more than a period of
10 Days, drop us a note requesting that we suspend your mail until you send
us another note requesting it be turned back on. (Don't ask to be removed!
Just suspended. There is a big difference in the amount of work involved.
When you are removed because you didn't tell us it was a temporary
suspension, it will require that you resubscribe all over again to be put
back on the lists. We don't save your information when you just ask to be
removed. When you ask to be suspended, we save all of your info and
reinstating your membership is a breeze.)

Anyway... Please make an effort to keep your Mailbox from filling to
overflowing. It will reduce our headaches and insure that you receive ALL
of your email, all of the time.

Happy New Year,

Mike Zets

A special message from your Moderators...

Since many of our members rely upon USNA-Net for the latest and greatest in
"Official" skinny about the Yard, we wanted to share with our members a very
important change which has occurred with regard to your Mid's Grade Reports.

Effective today, THE ACADEMY WILL NO LONGER MAIL GRADES TO ANYONE.

Instead, your Mid must access their grades on MIDS and send them to you if
s/he wishes. Below is a copy of the email which announces this policy
change and gives instructions on how it is done. You may want to save this
message for later reference.

(Please note that MIDS is the Midshipman Information Database Server and it
is available via the Internet TO MIDSHIPMEN ONLY! Members of the general
public, including Parents and Guardians, do not have access to the
information on MIDS regardless of whether or not they previously received
grade reports via US mail in the past.)

So now, if you want a copy of your Mid's grades, s/he must send them to you.

From: ADAA
To: Brigade of Midshipmen
Subj: Grade Reports

1. In the past, the Naval Academy mailed end-of-semester grade reports to
parents or guardians designated by midshipmen. For a variety of reasons, it
has become impractical to continue providing this service. Instead, a new
system has been developed that will allow you to generate an end-of-semester
grade report that you may then mail or email to anyone you choose.

Midshipmen may access this system by using MIDS.

 2. While the new system offers you a convenient means to generate an
end-of-semester grade report for yourself and to send that grade report to
whomever you please, it also places the responsibility for providing grades
to parents, guardians, or others entirely with you.

Finally, it should be noted that the Naval Academy does not make any
assertion as to the authenticity of grade reports that you send to others.

 3. Instructions for the new Grade Report system follow.
    a. To view and save your grade card, open the MIDS home page. Click on
the [Midshipmen] button and log into MIDS. Next, click on the link that is
labeled Academic Information Query. This module allows you to display your
academic information.

    b. On the initial page, five links are provided. Click the Semester
Grade Card link. Access to this report will begin at 0700 on Monday, 20
January 2003. This will display the latest completed semester grade card. To
print the grade card, select [File], then [Print] from your browser's menu.
To email the grade card, select [File], then [SaveAs] from the browser's
menu. Save the grade card where you please with whatever file name you
like. Email the saved document containing the semester grade card as a file
attachment.

ANNOUNCING OUR NEWEST SURVEY...

We have added a new survey to our Main Web Site. At the suggestion of
Maureen Acox whose Mid is an '06, our newest survey consists of several
questions about your Mid's Hometown and High School.

We have made a MAJOR revamp of the Survey Software so that our surveys will
accommodate "write in" answers if your situation does not fit the given
answers and, hopefully, we have overcome the problem a few members had when
trying to vote (and were only given the results page.)

All of that should be fixed with this latest survey. Your browser must
accept "cookies" in order for you to participate. It's how we track who has
already voted.

All new surveys will be archived so that you can view results months after
the survey is completed. We sincerely hope that you will all like the new
scripts.

To participate in the survey, go to www.USNA-Net.org and click on the Survey
Button on the right of the main page just below the Safe Harbor Life
Preserver graphic.

ENJOY!!!

PS. If you have suggestions for other surveys, please send them to
mzets@USNA-Net.org Some survey ideas which could not be accommodated in the
past may now be easily handled by our new software. If you sent in a
suggestion before and have not seen it used, now is the time to resubmit.

Results of the last Survey...

142 28.7% Second Child
 55 11.1% ONLY Child

All future surveys will be archived for your later reference.
