A special message from your Moderators...

We have finally been able to make a long overdue addition to our web site,
thanks in part, to the fact that we were finally able to twist his arm hard
enough to get a recent photograph taken to accompany the newest "bio" of one
of our most dedicated and hard working, behind-the-scenes volunteers.

We are referring, of course, to Richard Albrecht, our stalwart Technical
Advisor and Systems Programmer who has been with us since the summer of 2001
working to get our mailing lists set up and maintain their operations for
all these many months.

Richard hails from Urbana, IL. where he and his wife, Laurie, are
co-Presidents of the Central Illinois Parents Club. Their daughter,
Meredith, is in the Class of 2004.

When we put out a call for a UNIX "geek" to assist us in setting up the
current server and getting/keeping things running for our many mailing
lists, Richard volunteered to assist. What he though would be a few weeks
of evening programming and system administration have turned out to be a
continuous involvement ever since. We do not overstate the situation when
we say that USNA-Net wouldn't be half what it is today without his support
and many, many hours of behind-the-scenes work.

While our members may take certain things for granted in what appears to be
the flawless operation of our lists, day in and day out, we owe Richard a
huge "Thank You" for making all such things run so smoothly. For those of
you who are long time subscribers (especially the AOL members of two years
plus) you will remember that we were constantly reminding our members to not
send messages in Rich Text Format to the lists. If they did, the messages
were doubled in size and contained all of the Rich Text coding for bold,
fonts, and formatting. A real mess which even prevented some of our members
from reading the messages at all. It was through Richard's expertise that
we finally installed the necessary pre-processor software to eliminate HTML
coding and make all of our messages readable by all of our members. A big
problem solved.

Richard also sets up all of the new lists (i.e. USNA-Weather, just recently)
and has implemented the necessary software modifications to eliminate the
risk of our lists transmitting attachments which often contain viruses.
Since no attachments can be sent to our lists, the risk of a virus being
sent to you from USNA-Net is just about zero. Again, our thanks must go out
to Richard.

There are lots of other little techie details we could share but it's more
important that we also thank Richard (and his wonderful wife Laurie) for
being an integral part of our Advisory Team. We have planned and discussed
many of the key elements of day to day operation as well as consulted on
long term plans for the future.

So to make a long story even longer, if you need a glimpse of our most
revered Technical Advisor and System Programmer, go to the web site at
www.USNA-Net.org and click on "Our Staff" in the main menu on the left of
the main page. You'll find a photo and a short bio there along with a link
to his email address, just in case you want to personally drop him a thank
you email.

Thanks, Richard. We couldn't have done it without you.

Mike & Sandi

We realize just how strongly our members may feel about current events but
we must mention that our lists are not discussion forums for such things.

Our USNA-Net Mission Statement...

  1. To provide a convenient means to share support, advice and
information about Navy Parenting between members;
  2. To provide a forum for the exchange of ideas, tips, and experiences
gained as a Parent of a USNA Midshipman;
  3. To improve the quality of life of each member during the time they
are Navy Parents; and
  4. To distribute relevant, factual USNA News to members in a timely
fashion.

Our Rules of Operation are all derived from this simple statement of our
Mission and our Number ONE Rules is...

"1. - All messages must relate to The United States Naval Academy and/or
Navy Parenting."

========================================================

Everything we do at USNA-Net revolves around Navy Parenting. Please leave
all other topics to other, appropriate forums elsewhere on the Internet.
USNA-Net is dedicated to remaining focused exclusively on our Mission,
especially during these difficult times.

Thank you all for your continued support and understanding.

A special message from your Moderators...

I am posting this information on army/Navy game tickets so that everyone is
aware of the timetable and how it works.

First, All season ticket holders have until the 30th of THIS month to order
your tickets - both your season tickets and your army/Navy tickets. If you
received your packet back in February and set it aside to mail in later -
get it out TODAY and send it in!! The sale of season tickets ends on
Sunday!

Next, MIDSHIPMEN may begin buying tickets for the army/Navy game on MONDAY
April 1st ( the game will be held this year on December 6, 2003 at Lincoln
Financial Field in Philadelphia) . Each Mid can buy a maximum of FOUR
tickets. Last year, the Midshipmen allotment sold out in just two weeks.
Midshipmen must purchase their tickets, in person, at the Navy Ticket Office
in Ricketts Hall. So, if you want your Mid to buy your tickets - you'd
better get on the phone or email him/her and remind them to be SURE to buy
the tickets - if you need more than four, perhaps your Mid can buy some from
a company mate or friend. Just don't lose this window of opportunity, or
let your Mid "forget" to buy them. As a parent, unless you are a season
ticket holder, belong to the USNA Athletic Association, or are an Alumni -
this is your only opportunity to get tickets for the big game. If you want
to sit with your local USNA parents' club, be sure to have your Mid specify
the group number that has been assigned to your club when he buys the
tickets. If you do not know the number, contact your Social Chairman or
club president.

As is done every year, Incoming Plebe parents (class of 2007) will be mailed
a ticket application in early June. Plebe parents may purchase a maximum of
4 tickets. The plebe parent sale of army/Navy tickets is limited. Last
year, the plebe parent allotment was sold out in one week.

Public sale of tickets will be on July 14th

(All of this information comes directly from the season ticket order
packet.)

Now, don't say you weren't warned!! :>)

A special message from your Moderators...

Well, it happened again. Some of you may even have noticed it. Our web
site logged our 600,000th visitor today. Not too monumental if you run a
big commercial web site but another milestone for our little niche of
cyberspace.

Since we passed 500,000 visitors on 10/16/02, we averaged over 628 visitors
per day in the intervening 159 Days. - And that was over winter and the
Dark Ages. I can't wait to see what the average daily rate is this summer
when everyone is looking for new information on everything from Herndon to
Commissioning to Plebe Summer to Summer Blocks.

Looking at those kinds of numbers makes us proud to have worked so hard to
provide a site that is useful to our members and to the general public.
Remember, except for the Archives and Classifieds (which are Members Only),
all of the web site is open to the public - everyone from grandma to
teachers to friends and relatives can visit the site and look through all of
the photos and textual content that is there.

Remember to look stuff up in our Site Index. It is cross-referenced and
usually has a link to just what you're looking for, from phone numbers to
reference links on just about every aspect of Navy Parenting. If it's not
there, try the Search Engine which searches all of our 10 Million words in
our Archives as well as every one of the over 600 pages of stuff on the web
site itself.

And while you're at it... Why not stop by our On-Line Store. We are still
offering Blue Star Pennants and USNA-Mom pins at really good prices compared
to elsewhere on the Internet. We even saw someone selling one of our
USNA-Mom pins on eBay a couple of months ago. Funny, it actually auctioned
for more than a new pin would have sold for in our On-Line Store. And of
course, now more than ever, you want to have a Blue Star Pennant in your
front window to tell everyone in your neighborhood how proud you are to have
a son or daughter serving in the Military. Each of our members is permitted
to hang a pennant to signify that that household has a family member serving
in the military since each of your Mids is already in the Navy. Proceeds
help fund our web site and lists.

So thanks again to all of our wonderful visitors to our web site. It feels
good to know that so many of your visit the site so often.

PS. We've made it even easier to get to the web site. All you need do is
type in www.usna.ORG to be instantly taken to the USNA-Net web site.
That's right, the Academy is www.USNA.EDU - the Alumni Association is
www.USNA.COM and we're www.USNA.ORG. Isn't that easy to remember? Enjoy.

Go Navy.
