A special message from your Moderators...

A number of our members have written to us today asking why they received so
many copies of the same message this morning about Fund Raising and an
organization called WP-Org. These messages were sent to a few of our
members who are also subscribed to an alternate parents organization which
is supported by West Point Alumni and which has an annual budget in excess
of $200,000. This organization and its list for Navy parents is NOT part of
USNA-Net.

USNA-Net is NOT asking for donations at this time. Please do not confuse us
with this West Point Alumni Organization with its twice-a-year fund raisers
and who apply over 95% of all donations to West Point Alumni and Cadets.

USNA-Net is exclusively funded by and for Navy Parents. We hold our Annual
fund drive in September of each year and since we are entirely VOLUNTEER
based, our annual budget is only about $6,500. Even so, we still operate
the biggest Navy Parents Organization on the Internet with over 2,500 member
families, EIGHT focused lists, thousands of photos, and over 600 pages of
information on our web site. We also host 20 Local Parents Club web sites
at no charge with three more coming onboard soon.

Soooo... If you received a bunch of email this morning soliciting donations,
it didn't come from USNA-Net.

Meanwhile, remember that we operate eight different lists for the use and
enjoyment of all of our very diverse membership.

We have "USNA-Plebe" for all things related to Plebes and Plebe issues.

We have "USNA-07" for our incoming Plebe Parents until the '06 Parents are
"Plebes-no-more" and don't need that list following Herndon in late May.

We have "USNA-Prayer" for religious things and prayer requests.

We have "USNA-Sports" for EVERYTHING related to any Navy Sporting event,
including Tickets, Tailgating, Road Trips, Driving Directions,
Accommodations, etc.

We have "USNA-Weather" which is our daily weather report for Annapolis for
those who want to have the daily and extended forecast of their Mid's
weather each day.

We have "USNA-Family" for those things of General Interest to everyone and
which do not fall into the above categories.

We have from time to time used our "USNA-Info" list to address matters of
concern with specific sub-sets of members for informational purposes.

And lastly, we use "USNA-Net" as our Master (Announce Only) List to reach
every member regardless of any other list(s) to which they may belong.

Thanks so much for your continued support and participation.

A special message from your Moderators...

To All,

Just 90 Days until the swearing-in ceremony on I-Day.

Just a note to all of our members to remind you that new '07 parents are now
being enrolled on our USNA-Net lists.

As you meet parents of new prospective members of the Class of '07, we
encourage all of you to send them to our web site at www.USNA.org. Besides
all of the helpful information in the Parents' Handbook, they should take
the time to subscribe to our service.

Just tell them to click on "How to Subscribe" in our main menu on the left
of the main page. It only takes a minute and we all know just how much help
our fellow members are to these
newbie parents.

Go Navy.

A special message from your Moderators...

A Special Message about email hoaxes.

We need to remind our members that there is an old but apparently still
viable HOAX email message circulating among some of our members via private
email and from mailing lists which are not operated by USNA-Net.

The message instructs you to look on your computer for a file called jdbgmgr
.exe and to pitch it from your hard drive. This file is NOT a V1RUS !!!
It is a legitimate Windows file and is used by the Windows Operating System
for certain Java applications which are necessary for the proper viewing of
some pages on the Internet.

DO NOT DELETE THIS FILE !

For further information see...
http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99436

For additional information on a host of other Hoaxes, see...
http://vil.mcafee.com/hoax.asp

At USNA-Net, we have ALWAYS had automated filters in place to reject
messages which discuss such things. They did their job again tonight,
rejecting a message from a member who thought she was doing a service to our
members by sending along her HOAX message to our USNA-Family list. The
message, however, was also addressed to another mailing list (not operated
by USNA-Net) to which several of our members also belong and which has NO
filters in place to stop such messages. If you received such a message
tonight, PLEASE DO NOT DELETE this valid Windows file.

Remember, you will never receive an attachment, a virus or even a hoax
warning from USNA-Net. We truly do know how to filter such things and
protect our membership from potentially damaging email content.

If you have any questions about this or anything else related to mailing
lists, do not hesitate to send them to either Sandi or me. We'll be glad to
help.

A special message from your Moderators...

Please indulge your Moderator by reading this important reminder...

Subject: FAVORS

Ladies and gentlemen,

USNA-Net is a free service supplied through the volunteer efforts of many
individuals and the generosity of our membership. It operates as well as it
does and serves the needs (both emotional and physical) of our members, due
in part, to the fact that we have a fairly short but well engineered set of
Rules of Operation which govern what the lists may or may not be used for.

The lists are here to assist parents in any one of a number of avenues from
serious advice on "leaving the Academy" and "adjusting to the nest being
empty" to lesser things (but also important to many members) such as what to
take to I-Day and how to dress for a Graduation Ball. But they are NOT here
to be used for your own (or someone else's) personal gain. Therefore, one
of our Rules is that you are not to use these communication facilities to
ASK FOR FAVORS from other members.

Here's why...

At last count we had over 2,500 families enrolled and the numbers are
growing daily as new '07 parents arrive. Let's suppose that each of our
members decided to ask for just one little, innocent favor each semester.
That doesn't seem to be unreasonable? Does it? After all, it's just one
innocent little thing and it's no big deal. Is it?

Well here's what happens on our list of over 2,500 families...

We would have more than a dozen such requests in our mail boxes EVERY DAY.
(You see, that's 2,500 x 2 / 365 per year = 13.7 messages every day.)
That's assuming that the requests were spread out evenly over the entire
year. That's a whole lot of favors to be asked. Imagine opening your
mail each and every day to find 13 or 14 messages from other members asking
for a special (but ever so tiny) favor. What would you do after the third
or fourth day? Or after three months? Would you stay subscribed? Most
wouldn't. Without Mentors, there would be no good advice on so many things.
Without members, our lists would cease to exist.

This is why we must remind each and everyone of you to read our Rules of
Operation and to abide by them at all times. A few minutes spent reading
our Rules is a small price to pay in return for years of good advice and
mentor support on a well run service such as USNA-Net. If we all know and
abide by the rules, the lists will continue to be a blessing to thousands of
parents for many, many years to come.

Thank you for your attention.
