A special message from your Moderators...

To all,

Sandi and I will be traveling to Wilmington, Delaware to attend Sandi's
daughter's Masters Thesis Exhibit in Photography on Friday afternoon. She
graduates later in the month with her Masters in Photography and Ceramics
from U of W.

While we're away, we'll be watching the lists via our laptop but we just
wanted you to know that we won't be replying to personal messages,
processing changes of address or subscription requests for a couple of days.
We expect to return late Saturday evening.

Go Navy...

A special message from your Moderators...

Increasingly, Internet Service Providers are helping their subscribers to
filter spam (unsolicited commercial email) from the messages they receive
via email. In doing so, however, you have to make sure that you don't
filter out desirable USNA-Net email at the same time.

Some of our members have implemented new spam filters which prevent email
from being delivered from anyone except those on their "White List" which is
their way of saying that "if I don't know you, I don't want to receive mail
from you." This is fine but it STOPS MAIL FROM USNA-NET!!! You see, you
don't know everyone who writes to our lists. Some spam filters see the
"From: USNA-Family@USNA-Net.org" email address and automatically assume it's
junk mail. Others will look deeper into the address header and see that
it's from a member like JB.Hoffer@verizon.net (Joyce Hoffer) for instance,
look at their list of approved senders and then reject it because that email
address isn't one that you remembered to add to your White List.

Spam filters are wonderful, useful things. But please be careful when you
decide to implement one on your computer or email account. If you block
email from our lists, you will more than likely also be blocking email from
me as well. I can't even write to you individually to ask you to fix the
problem. This morning I had to remove three more members who have stopped
allowing us to deliver email to their addresses. I doubt that they even
know they blocked us but I have no way of contacting them to get it fixed.

So a word of advice, PLEASE be careful that you don't exclude USNA-Net email
when you install spam filters on your email account. This is a really big
problem with AOL accounts but can be a problem with ANY email account. I
can't help you fix a problem with this stuff since there are countless
programs and settings involved with every different service provider.
Contact your Tech Support people for specific assistance.

One last thing, remember that email from USNA-Net comes addressed to the ind
ividual list address (like USNA-Plebe@USNA-Net.org) and not to YOU. Also,
it can come FROM anyone of our over 2,500 individual members.

Keep all this in mind when installing spam filters and your USNA-Net email
will continue without interruption.

Thanks for your understanding.

A special message from your Moderators...

Just a quick note to all of our members...

We have a number of parents who require that they have more than one email
address in our system. Sometimes it's because Mom and Dad don't live at the
different places, or Dad wants it to be delivered at work and Mom wants it
to be sent to the house. Whatever the cause, we will gladly set up a second
account for you if it is more convenient.

Just go to the web site and submit a second application with all of the
information for the second email address. We'll set up the second
subscription in a day or less.

Speaking of visiting the web site (www.USNA.org), Saturday was a record
setter. From Midnight Friday to Midnight Saturday, we had 2,311 visitors to
the web site. This was the highest number of visitors in 24 hours that our
site has ever experienced. I guess it's that time of year when all of the
incoming '07 parents are taking to the time to read the Handbook and look
through the photographs.

Remember that we have several years worth of photos of I-Day (including
shots inside Alumni Hall) posted in our Photo Gallery. You can learn a lot
from just looking at what was going on last year or the year before. Your
'07 Plebe may want to visit the site and see what's in store for them in
just 40 days.

A special message from your Moderators...

To all,

As Memorial Day Weekend brings in the end of May and Commissioning Week
concludes, I am reminded that we need to ask for your help again.

There are about 1,300 '07 candidates out there whose parents are wondering
what USNA is all about. How does it all work? What do we do about...?
When? What? Where? How? You all remember those questions. We all had
them a month before our own I-Day.

Now is your chance to balance the books and pay us back for being there when
you had those questions - when you needed our help. It's time for you to
recruit the parents of the Class of '07. Our only method of contacting them
is via word of mouth. And what better word of mouth campaign could there be
than to hear about USNA-Net from an upper-class parent who benefited so much
from membership?

You will be attending local Parents' Club events in the next few weeks.
Spread the word. Tell every '07 Parent you meet that they absolutely MUST
join USNA-Net before I-Day. In the next five weeks, we'll publish tons of
advice and useful information about everything from haircuts to boxers to
running gear to calculators to ... Well, you know. You know just how much
information you received from USNA-Net in your Plebe year. Don't let a
single '07 struggle on their own.

What I want you to remember is this... How many of you have heard someone
say something like... "If only I had known about USNA-Net earlier!" Did
you say it yourself? What if someone had never told you about USNA-Net? How
much different would your I-Day and Plebe Summer experience have been
without USNA-Net?

Please help us to find and subscribe those parents who need us the most.
Incoming '07 Plebe Parents just don't understand USNA and what it's all
about. Help us to help them! Without YOU to help recruit the next class of
parents, how will they find us?

Spread the word! Pass on the Tradition!

Go Navy! Go USNA-Net!

A special message from your Moderators...

Since today appears to be a slower than usual message day, I thought I'd
bring a few things to your attention to make life easier for our members and
your Moderators. In no particular order...

1.) Please set your email program to NOT quote the original message in
the body of your response. Send us a copy of the entire email to which you
are responding doubles or even triples the size of your email and really
forces us to archive multiple copies of most messages. If you really need
to remind the reader of what you are talking about, cut and paste a line or
two at the beginning of your response.

2.) PLEASE respond to the List rather than to the private individual.
Most of our members are just like you. They read a lot and write very
little. If there are no public answers sent back to our lists, most of our
members will never share in your experience and advice. That sort of
defeats the purpose of the lists and causes a lot of duplicate questions
because answers don't get published where everyone can share it.

3.) If you wish to change an email address or remove yourself from a
list, just send us a short personal note at moderator@USNA-Net.org. We'll
usually get the change made within an hour. DO NOT SEND THESE REQUESTS TO
OUR LISTS. All of our members do not need to read about your need to be
added to or removed from a list.

4.) For those of you who can't handle the large number of emails to some
of our lists each day, we do offer a Digest Version which sends out only one
or possibly two large messages each day which contains ALL of the day's
messages (unabridged). While it can sometimes run a full day to three days
behind the "live" broadcast messages, you will still be able to read every
word that is sent - just not in real time. We find this is a good solution
for those who must receive their email at work. To switch to Digest, send
us a note to moderator@USNA-Net.org and tell us which lists to change.

5.) Remember that our lists keep track of you by your email address and
not by your name. If you send a note to our lists from an account under
which you are not subscribed, your message will be rejected as a non-member
and forwarded to the Moderators instead of the list. To help move things
along smoothly, please remember to send all your messages from your
"subscribed" email address.

6.) Many times the Moderators forward a message to the list for a variety
of reasons. Please remember to send your responses to the original author
of the message rather than the Moderator. We just have to forward it for
you and that can take a lot of time if a lot of members don't pay attention
to who actually authored the message. Again, this can be avoided by sending
your responses to the list rather than the individual.

7.) If you need to send a message anonymously to our lists, just address
it to Moderator@USNA-Net.org and MAKE SURE you tell us that you want it
posted anonymously. We will gladly strip off all of your identifying
information and send it along for you.

7.5) MAKE SURE YOU FIND AND RECRUIT AN '07 PARENT for membership in
USNA-Net. Tell them to visit www.USNA.org and click on "How to Subscribe"
in our menu. Without YOUR assistance, a majority of '07 parents won't find
us until after I-Day and some never do hear about us. We rely upon your
spreading the word about how great this service is and how much help it can
be.

Thanks,

Mike & Sandi Zets
