A special message from your Moderators...

We like to think of our USNA-Net organization as an informative and friendly
place for our members to keep up with things going on at the Yard and to
share our experiences with each other, making being a Parent of a Midshipman
a more rewarding and fulfilling experience for all of our members.

We all come to this extended family with different points of view and
expectations. Some want only the information. Others need our daily "fix"
of what's happening. Still others, need serious advice and support during a
family or personal crisis. We certainly hope that our lists give each of
our members something of value in return for the time we all spend reading
and writing to our many lists. We also understand that the volume can be
overwhelming at times. With Plebe Summer coming to an end, the message
volume will subside on the Plebe list but remember, with over 3,000 families
subscribed, the number of messages sent each day will still be more than
some can handle. Please be understanding and delete those messages in which
you are not interested.

Occasionally, a problem arises which necessitates the intervention of the
Moderators and the application of our Rules of Operation. These rules are
in place to make our lists a pleasant place for all our members no matter
what their expectations. They maintain our focus and keep this large
organization of over 3,000 different families on track and working well for
everyone.

IMPORTANT....
Recently, it came to our attention that a few members have been sending out
Private email in which they have been critical of other members, criticizing
them about what they write to the lists, flaming others and generally being
disrespectful of other members via private email. Even though our Rules are
very explicit about not flaming others on our lists or never sending out
reprimands for what members post to the lists, we realized that our Rules
are not as explicit about what actions will be taken if a member is reported
doing this. We have therefore added a "clarification" to our Rules so that
everyone is perfectly clear that Personal Attacks will not be tolerated.

Since we have no way of knowing just how many of these Personal Attacks
actually take place "off-net" between private members, we have adopted a
zero tolerance for such messages. In the future, all reports of such
attacks (either publicly on the lists or via private email) will be dealt
with immediately and will result in the immediate termination of the
offending member's membership in all USNA-Net lists, even on the first
offense. There is never an excuse for one member to attack another for any
reason.

Having said that, we want to make sure that all of our members understand
that we have revised our Rules of Operation (#4 Personal Attacks) to reflect
our position on this matter. While we certainly know that personal attacks
are a rare situation, we want all of you to know that we will enforce our
Rules to make this place as warm and friendly an organization as can be
found for Parents of Midshipmen. If you have questions or know of a
situation which warrants our attention in this regard, we invite you to
email us privately. Your Board of Advisors guarantee that each and every
correspondence will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.

As we all look forward to the Reform of the Brigade and the beginning of a
new Academic Year, we hope that our Net Family can rest comfortably in the
knowledge that our lists are the best place to share Advice and Support to
be found on the Internet.

Best wishes for a great new Academic Year.

We've had a request for photos from the Editor of the Lucky Bag. Her
message is below.

Surely among 3,000 USNA Families, we can find a few good photos from your
personal collections. If you have recent photos of any of the following
teams, please send them directly to Ensign Julia Feys at m032202@usna.edu.

Men's Club Volleyball Team
Men's Club Lacrosse Team
Men's Soccer Team

We can't guarantee publication but they need our help. I'm sure that
digital would be preferred under the time constraints of a Friday Deadline.
If you have questions please send them directly to ENS Feys at her email
address above.

I am the editor of the Lucky Bag; USNA's yearbook. Our finial deadline is
this Friday and we have not been able to find any pictures of the Men's Club
Volleyball Team, Men's Club Lax Team or the Men's Club Soccer Team. I was
wondering if a message could be posted asking for parents with photos of
these sports to send them to me for use in the 2003 Lucky Bag. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

A special message from your Moderators...

As most of you are aware by now, there is a massive power outage in the
North-East. Please be assured that our USNA-Net servers are located in a
commercial data center that has adequate backup power. Our servers are in
an area (Northern Virginia) that is not effected by the outage. We do not
anticipate any direct problems as a result of this situation.

However, Mike and Sandi Zets, who live in the Cleveland area, are down for
the duration and will not be answering any e-mails or responding to
administrative requests. In addition to the outage, Mike and Sandi will be
in Annapolis over the weekend, attending a wedding in the Chapel.
Therefore, routine messages will not be answered until the first of next
week. Urgent administrative issues may be addressed to
ralbrecht@usna-net.org, but I am not set up to handle the full load of
routine requests.

The Safe Harbor phone system is up and working. We do not anticipate any
interruption in this service.

Please bear with us during this power situation.

Respectfully,

Richard Albrecht

===================================================
VIRUS ALERT - NEW VIRUSES ABOUND
===================================================

A NEW VIRUS CAN INFECT YOUR COMPUTER WITHOUT YOU EVER
OPENING AN ATTACHMENT OR EVEN READING AN EMAIL!!!

DOZENS OF USNA-NET MEMBERS ALREADY INFECTED!
===================================================

Now that we have your attention, IT'S TRUE. Please take the time to read
this entire message. It's REALLY IMPORTANT.

The latest strain of Computer virus can attack your home computer just by
you being connected to the Internet visiting your favorite web site. It
attacks through a flaw in the Windows Operating System.

If you are running Windows XP or any of the Windows 2000/NT Operating
Systems, you must take the time to install the critical updates from
Microsoft because this latest threat will allow your computer to be
attacked, infected and damaged, simply by connecting to the internet. It
exploits a defect in Windows which allows others on the internet to find,
invade and take over your computer at will. There is a FREE patch which
must be installed to prevent this. You should open your Microsoft Internet
Explorer (your Browser) and Click on "Tools" in the top menu and then
"Windows Update." Follow the instructions to install all of the Service
packs and patches it will tell you that you need.

===================================================
OTHER VIRUSES POSE EVEN GREATER THREAT !!!
===================================================

Recently, a growing number of our members have become infected with a
variety of viruses and have been spreading them like wildfire each time they
turn on their computers. YOU NEED TO PROTECT YOURSELF...

Here's how....

1.) Get and install AntiVirus Software (AVS) TODAY!!! It is only a
matter of time before a virus hits your computer and destroys it. New
viruses are being made everyday and if you don't have AVS installed and
updated almost daily, YOU ARE AT RISK. Not the kid down the street. YOU!

2.) You need CURRENT AVS. Last year's AVS is worse than no AVS at all
because you think you're protected, but you're not. If your AVS hasn't
updated itself in the past 48 hours, YOU'RE AT RISK.

3.) Empty out all those unneeded addresses in your address book. If you
do become infected, you won't spread the virus to as many people with fewer
names in your book.

4.) NEVER open an attachment to email (even from a friend or relative)
that you're not expecting and recognize the contents of before you open it.
When in doubt, DELETE.

5.) Remember that infections almost always come FROM SOMEONE YOU KNOW.
Your address won't be in the address book of strangers. You will become
infected by being careless for just a split second, trusting email from a
friend and then BANG! You've got a bug that will spread to everyone in YOUR
address book and destroy your computer after it spreads.

Right now, at least two dozen of our members are infected. Would you rather
spend a few bucks today to protect your investment or pay someone to fix (or
REPLACE!!!) your computer in a few more days or weeks when a virus destroys
it???

To that end, we suggest that if you need to obtain AVS for your computer.
You can find a copy at any local store which sells computer software or buy
it on-line in our USNA-Net bookstore for as little as 9 dollars. Both
Norton and McAffee make excellent packages which, once properly installed,
will automatically update themselves with the latest V1RUS data to fight
infection for the next year. If you are already infected, be sure to read
and follow the instructions in the manual BEFORE you attempt to install the
AVS.

As a responsible member of USNA-Net you are expected to have current AVS
installed on your computer. To protect yourself AND everyone in your
address book. You place all of them at risk by not being protected.

It's only a matter of time until you get a virus. Will YOU be protected?

GO NAVY

A special message from your Moderators...

It is with great pride that we have the pleasure of announcing another new
addition to our USNA-Net family of Hosted Parents' Club Web Sites which has
found a home on our server.

Please join me in extending a hardy WELCOME ABOARD to the Oklahoma Naval
Academy Parent Club who now have their very own club web site at...

www.OKNAPC.org (OKlahoma Naval Academy Parents' Club)

Webmastered by Ronnie Ronspiez whose daughter, Heather, is in the Class of
2007 at the US Coast Guard Academy, the site becomes the 26th Parents' Club
web site hosted for free by USNA-Net on our server.

Please visit the site and let Ronnie know what a great resource he has put
up for his club members. You can find the Oklahoma site at the above link
or by visiting our USNA-Net web site at www.USNA.org and clicking on the
"Parents' Club Web Sites" link in our main menu. While your at it, please
be sure to click on all of the club web site links in the Map of the US.
Each Yellow State represents a web site for a club in that area. for a total
of 40 web sites operated by local Parents' Clubs around the nation, probably
one near you.

While you're surfing all these sites, we also want you to be sure to visit
another new site for the Naval Academy Parents' Club of San Diego. Go to
http://sdparents.gousna.net/ or click on Southern California on our US Map
for their new site as well.

Welcome Aboard to both of these newest additions to our Internet family.

Go Navy...

PS. If your club wants it's own web site, remember that USNA-Net will
register a domain and host your site for FREE, no strings attached. Contact
me for more information and complete details. Think of the postage it will
save you by posting your newsletter and membership directory on your very
own web site instead of printing and mailing all that paper all the time.

(By the way, we had the Oklahoma site up and running in just a couple of
days from the time Ronnie contacted us to the time they went LIVE.)

Just a reminder to all of our members to check our Classified Ads on our web
site every once in a while since other members are always adding new ads.

A member just wrote to me and begged me to remind you to take a look. She's
asking for some assistance and really needs someone to respond.

To view the Classified Ads, go to our web site at www.USNA-Net.org and click
on the "Classified Ads" link in the main menu. You'll need the User Name
and Passwrd to access them because they are for Members Only.

Here they are again so that you don't have to look them up...

Please print for future reference...

User Name: brigade
Passwrd: navy58army12 (all lowercase - no spaces)
