A special message from your Moderators...

Fellow USNA-Net members,

Can it be another year already? It was September of last year when USNA-Net
last asked for your assistance. We've grown a lot in that time...

- Our total membership is now over 3,000 USNA Families including 750 new
families in the Class of '07.

- Our Website had 283,000 visitors.

- Our Archives have swollen to over 15 Million words of valuable Advice
and Support.

- We've added a daily USNA-WEATHER list for those who need that
"Connected" feeling.

- We've added hundreds of photographs to our Photo Gallery.

- There are new Wallpapers and Postcards for our members to use.

- Our www.USNA-Net.org Website has grown to over 550 pages of
information.

- We now host 26 Local Parents Club Websites at no costs to the clubs.

- We continue our Safe Harbor Program, now with over 1,050 volunteer
families registered to render assistance any hour of the day or night to
Mids on three continents.

- And Plebe Summer 2003 (with its 2,700 individual Plebe list messages
shared between Herndon and Reform) is finally just a memory.

It's been a wonderfully fulfilling year, indeed.

We were able to do all of this because of your generosity. Last year when
we asked for your support, your response was overwhelming and in just six
days last September, we reached our Fund Raising goal. While every hour of
time provided by all of those who volunteer to operate USNA-Net, either
directly or indirectly, is donated without compensation, we still incur real
operating expenses for our server and its connection to the Internet. So we
will need your help again this September to help us defray our expenses and
keep USNA-Net on the Internet and fulfilling its Mission of "Parents Helping
Parents."

For those of you who have contributed in the past, we are asking that you do
it again - only once, this fall, for the next 12 months. For those of our
members who are new to USNA-Net, especially those members of the Class of
'07 who were helped so much during Plebe Summer, we ask that you take a
moment to send in whatever you can afford. So many of you have written to
express your thanks for all that our lists have meant to you as you left
your Plebes on I-Day and had to endure the rigors of separation with only
your friends on USNA-Net to help you get through the summer. This is now
your opportunity to say Thank You to the entire group with a donation to
help keep us going for another year.

Rest assured, we totally understand the restraints on family budgets. It's
tough sometimes to come up with a few extra dollars. If you can't send
something now, we understand. BUT... We really do need our members'
support.

We like to think of ourselves as the Internet equivalent of Public
Television. If you send in your donation, you get to watch PBS. If you
don't, you still get to watch all of the same programs but you just don't
get to feel quite as good about it. And "our" PBS station will only ask for
donations ONCE a year. :>)

You can find all of the details about how to donate on our website's main
page by clicking on the blue DONATE button in the middle of the page. We
have published our ANNUAL budget there for your information as well.

On-line donations (via our secure server) may be made using your Visa or
Mastercard with total security and absolute privacy. If you prefer, there
is also an address there to which you may mail a check.

So on behalf of all of the members of USNA-Net and our Board of Advisors...
Thanks so much for your continued support..

A special message from your Moderators...

Well, it's been a great first day for our 2003 Fund Drive. We've received
donations, large and small, from parents of all classes and even a few grad
parents and sponsors as well.

Donations to date = USD 2,325.00

That's 30 % of our entire goal for this year which is USD 7,700.00

It's amazing just how generous our members choose to be when we ask for your
help. Thank you to all who have already donated.

In case you missed it, we started our 2003 Fund Drive yesterday. We only
ask for your help ONCE each year, in September, for funds to operate our
service for the entire next year.

Surely, you understand the real value USNA-Net can be to parents of
Midshipmen. Won't you take a moment to donate in kind to help us to
continue to help other parents as we helped you over the past year???

Visit our web site at www.USNA.org and click on the Blue DONATE button in
the middle of the main page. You can either donate On-Line via our secure
server or send us a check (the address is there).

As each of you benefited from membership in USNA-Net over the past year, now
it's time to show your appreciation with a donation to help us continue
operations for yet another year.

Won't you please do your share?

A special message from your Moderators...

Since we announced our 2003 Fund Raising Drive on Tuesday (9/2/03), we have
had a steady response with total donations now reaching $4,747.00 (61.6% of
our goal).

We'd like to thank all of those who have donated to the cause. Without your
help, USNA-Net would not be able to continue operations for the coming year.

We'd also like to ask all of those members who haven't yet participated in
our 2003 Fund Drive to consider helping us to finish our drive in record
time. We try not to bug our members too much over this and we only ask for
funding ONCE each year in September.

So to all those '07 Parents out there who eagerly read the daily mail during
this past Plebe Summer and looked for pictures of their Plebe in all of the
pictures we posted all summer long, PLEASE CONSIDER GIVING A DONATION.
We've heard so many of you say how you wouldn't have made it through the
summer without USNA-Net. Now is your chance to help us to help the next
class of parents who will have to go through the same ordeal next summer.

We have a small budget for an organization our size and only ask for funds
to cover our actual operating costs. All of those who make this happen on a
daily basis do so on a strictly volunteer basis.

Try to think of it this way... What would you gladly spend to buy a fellow
USNA parent a cup of coffee once a week while you both gabbed about your
Mids? The tab for two cups of coffee every week would only be a buck.
Isn't the benefit you received and the friendships you formed by being a
member of USNA-Net worth the price of that cup of coffee? One of our
members sent us a donation for $52 figuring it must be worth at least a
dollar a week for the information, advice and support that she received as a
member.

Won't you do the same? If you can't spare that much, we understand but
anything you can spare would be appreciated. We don't ask for much and we
don't ask often. Let us hear from you, today. Any amount will help to put
us over the top.

To donate (either on-line or via US Mail), go to www.USNA-Net.org and click
on the BLUE DONATE BUTTON on the main page. It's easy to do and it will
help so many other parents over the next year.

Thanks again to those who have already given so generously. You can feel
good knowing that you've done something to help other parents by keeping
USNA-Net going for another year and another class of parents.

Go Navy...

One of our Board of Advisors asked that I remind our membership about a
particularly nasty and deceptive VIRUS that is spreading via email. It
appears to come FROM Microsoft Security and professes to be a patch for
Internet Explorer (MSIE).

It is NOT from Microsoft and the attachment to the email is NOT a patch but
is actually a VIRUS which will infect your computer if you open it.

While you will NEVER receive an attachment from our lists because our server
is incapable of forwarding attachments, you should be very wary of any email
containing attachments even if they seem to come from friends or family.
The most recent viruses fake the return address on their messages using
addresses it finds in the infected computer's address book, so that messages
carrying the virus may appear to come from someone your know and probably
trust.

We just wanted you all to be aware of the way these new infections attemptto
trick you into opening the infected files which come as attachments.

Be careful out there and make sure that you have up-to-date AntiVirus
software installed.

Remember all those days during your Mid's Plebe Summer when you lived for
the next email from USNA-Net? Could you have made it without your fellow
parents on the Net? Sure, but it would have been an entirely different
experience. Who better understands what you go through while your Mid
serves "Four Years by the Bay"?

How many of you have told us that you were just thinking that same question
when the answer poped up on the lists? Have you shared a better
understanding of being a Naval Academy Parent because of our lists? Are you
richer for your participation? How much is that kind of Advice and Support
worth? Most will say they can't put a price tag on their membership in
USNA-Net. We don't ask you to. We simply ask that you share a few dollars
in support of our organization in order to insure that it continues for the
next class and beyond? If you don't help, who will?

We are running a bit behind in participation compared with years past and I
just don't quite see why. We have over 150 more Class of '07 members this
year than we had '06 Plebe parents last year AND our total membership is up
an additional 600 members to over 3,000 Families. Yet, we've only heard
from 170 members so far. It only takes a minute to send us something using
your Visa or Mastercard and our On-Line Donor From. The process is totally
secure, using the highest level of encryption possible.

We've always done so well in previous fund drives, help us wrap this up
today.

To donate on-line or to send us a check by mail, click on the Big Blue
Donate Button in the middle of the main page at www.USNA.org and follow the
instructions.

Please help us TODAY.

Dear Friends...

That's right. It's all over but the shoutin'!!! Yahoo !!!!

In just six days, we reached our 2003 Fund Raising Goal. We're at a loss
about how to express our thanks. It really warms the heart to know that so
many of you think so well of USNA-Net and our efforts on behalf of our
members.

We got on-line donations and checks in the mail that actually will exceed
our 2003 goal when all the deposits are made. As a result, we will be able
to continue all of our programs for another full year.

We have the money we need to maintain our server which hosts our huge
www.USNA.org web site with its Photo Gallery, Parents Handbook, Archives,
Classifieds and all the other features that you have come to depend upon all
year long.

We'll be able to continue operating all of our six lists including the Net,
Family, Plebe, Sports, Prayer and Weather lists.

We'll be able to continue another year of operation of our SAFE HARBOR
program with its Toll Free 800 number for Midshipmen.

We'll be able to continue FREE hosting and Domain Name Registration for all
the Local Parents' Club web sites (currently 25 with another to open soon.).

And lots more... All because YOU took the time to help us.

On behalf of each and every one of your fellow USNA-Net members...

THANK YOU. THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!!!

A special message from your Moderators...

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The recent posting about Firstie Parents Weekend brings to the fore a
problem which needs to be addressed again... Just what USNA-Net is and what
it is not.

We are an Advice and Support network for parents of Midshipmen with our
primary focus on Navy Parenting. We exist solely for the purpose of
allowing parents to interact and share experiences on how to support our
fellow members as their sons and daughters prepare to serve their country at
the United States Naval Academy.

There are many times when our ability to aid other parents is serious and
extremely helpful and others times when a bit of whimsy (Chocolate Covered
Crickets) is a welcome relief from the pressures of an empty nest and a
sense of despair for the parent left behind. One thing is for sure...

We are not a discussion forum on the subject of Academy Policy.

Calls to Action are specifically prohibited by our Rules of Operation along
with a specific prohibition against any message which can be interpreted as
being critical of the Academy. These rules exist for very good reasons.
Our Mission at USNA-Net is to help parents as their Mids go through the
Academy. We truly can't affect change or exert influence on Academy Policy.
Nor is it our place to attempt to do so, either as individual parents or as
USNA-Net. Our sons and daughters are serving in the US Navy and are subject
to the needs of the Navy. It is our job as supportive parents to make sure
that we do everything possible to help our sons and daughters to learn from
the experiences gained at the Academy.

I'd like to quote a portion of a message I received from a member this
evening on this subject because it reflects the precise message we should
all be sending our Mids...

----Quote-----
I guess what we, as parents, need to remember is that while it is important
for our sons and daughters to obey orders, it is equally important for them
to learn to deal with unpleasant situations appropriately. While our
initial reaction to this situation would be to react emotionally out of
utter disappointment, we need to remember that their careers are at a
critical early stage, and they are constantly being evaluated on how well
they approach problem-solving opportunities. Besides, nothing we say or do
can make this situation more pleasant or easier for anyone... our reacting
can only make it more difficult for them.
-----End Quote-----

Please help us to remain out of the fray... supportive in every way we can
be.

A special message from your Moderators...

Dear Fellow Navy Parents,

As the hurricane approaches the East Coast, most major news agencies, The
Weather Channel and the on-line news portals will all be providing updates
on the progress and projected track of the storm. While we are all
concerned, rest assured that the Academy has gone through this many times in
its 150 year history and will do so again. Your Mids are all safe and well
looked after.

In the meantime, we must ask that you refrain from posting news and weather
reports to our lists - especially those which are direct quotes of
copyrighted material found elsewhere on the Internet.

Please note that we have up-to-the-minute weather information from NOAA on
our web site at www.USNA.org. Just click on the "Web Cam and Weather" icon
on our main page. The Information and images are updated hourly, 24/7.
Also, our USNA-Weather listserv will send you a daily forecast with extended
forecast information AND during times like this, we also furnish Special
Weather Bulletins as they are released by NOAA - direct to you via your
mailbox. To sign up for our weather list, just send Sandi a note at
jsandi@USNA-Net.org.

So to keep the message traffic down during this coming weekend, please
refrain from "flooding" our lists with breaking news and weather reports.
:>) If you want that information, use our Weather Service on our web site
or visit any one of dozens of weather web sites on the Internet.

Thanks for your cooperation during the coming week.

To our Firstie Parents... Enjoy your weekend. Getting there may be a new
experience but the storm looks like it will be well past Annapolis for your
planned weekend.

If we learn of any OFFICIAL news or changes concerning the Academy's plans
for the weekend, we will post it to our USNA-Net members immediately.

Thanks again,

Mike Zets

A special message from your Moderators...

To all,

I have received two sets of photos that I wanted to share with you.

The first comes from Lynette Pierce - and are of the home opener football
game with VMI. There are shots here that are new - you will see the march
over, the march on - the football team taking the field - with the plebes
lined on either side of them cheering them on - you will see plebes doing
pushups- there are 18 photos here, I know you will like them.

Two things of note... First, there is a picture taken of the Brigade facing
the Gold side (opponents side) . For those of you who have never been to a
home football game, there is a tradition that you many not know about.
After the Brigade has marched onto the field, after the presentation of
colors and the singing of the National Anthem - the Brigade, en masse -
turns to the opponents side (the Gold side) and chants the school's name
("V" "M" "I" -- "Gooooo VMI!") and then they tip their covers in a sort of
salute. Then they turn to face the Blue side and chant "U" "S" "N"
"A" - "Gooooo Navy!" Really cool. If you look carefully at the last photo
in Barb Suydam's set of photos from the VMI game, you will see a Midshipman
in the upper deck with two flags. These are used to synchronize the Brigade
as they chant and there is one on both sides of the stadium. For my son's
FPW - when the covers where tipped - some of the Mids left their covers on -
an orchestrated "practice" for the A/N game and the covers remaining on the
Mids heads read - visible to those on the Blue side of the stadium - "Go
Navy - Beat Army." Quite a thrill to see that day, and again at the A/N
game in December!! If you would like to see what THAT looked like, click
here: www.usna-net.org/hattrick.jpg Second - did anyone ever mention how
many push ups the plebes had to do for the home opener? Well, considering
that they have to do a push up for every point - keeping track on the
previous score - 7 for the first touchdown and extra point - 14 for the
second touchdown and extra point - 21 for the third touchdown and extra
point - and so on - with a score of 43 points, they did a total of 141 push
ups during the game!!

Thanks, Lynette for sharing your photos!

The second set were taken by Sandra Johnson on Sunday at the Sprint Football
game. Navy beat Johns Hopkins 48 to 13. We rarely get photos of this
sport - and the Sprint team has had huge success in recent years - you have
to go back to Oct 6, 2001 to find a loss (which was their only loss that
season) - last year, they were undefeated. this year the team looks just
as strong! Thanks so much for sharing these photos with us, Sandra!

You will find both sets on the "Fall - 2003" page of the Photo Gallery.
Just go to the USNA-Net website: www.usna-net.org and click onto "Photo
Gallery" from the menu items on the left side of the page. Then click onto
"Fall - 2003" to see these newest photos. Sandra's are at the top of the
page, and Lynette's are at the top of the VMI group.

Enjoy,

OFFICIAL INFORMATION FROM USNA

----- Original Message -----
From: "Thomas McKavitt" <mckavitt@usna.edu>
To: <nonmids@usna.edu>

Subject: Hurricane Isabel information

All,

Here's some pertinent information regarding Hurricane Isabel.

The class schedule for Thursday will be an accelerated schedule (the same
one normally used the day before Thanksgiving). 1st period will commence at
0655, classes will be the standard 50 minutes in length and 6th period will
end at 1245 (no lunch break). Employees in other cost centers should report
to work on a normal schedule. Weather conditions will be monitored
throughout the day and any adjustment to the normal workday routine will be
promulgated via basewide email and cost centers.

The Friday schedule is Code Green unless otherwise announced via local media
outlets and the Weather Hotline (410-293-0032). This phone line can handle
75 calls simultaneously. Do not rely on the Base Ops website (this will
only refer you to the Hotline).

Decisions on activities outside the normal class/work day (sporting events,
reunion activities, Levy Center events, etc.) will be made on a case by case
basis for both Thursday evening and Friday. The Hotline will be updated as
those decisions are made.

The Emergency Operations Center will be manned beginning at 1000 tomorrow.
The phone number is 410-293-5970. This number is for NON-EMERGENCY CALLS
ONLY. For emergencies you still must dial x3-3333 or 911. Non-emergency
calls would be to report downed trees, powerlines, flooding in
streets/buildings/quarters, broken windows, etc.

Gate 8 will remain open 24/7. I anticipate Gate 1 will become impassable
late Thursday night and may not be open on Friday. Gate 3 should be open on
Friday. Most of you know the chronic troublespots for street flooding...
please stay away from these areas. We will do our best to monitor these
areas and close them off when they become impassable. I need you to pay
attention and honor barriers in the road. To ignore them is to place you
and your vehicle at risk. The first
roads to flood will be Brownson Rd, Ramsey Rd (by the Columbarium), and
Bowyer Rd at Hubbard Hall. This last may effectively divide the Yard in
half. We will keep Gate 3 open as long as possible to allow residents of
the lower Yard to return home Thursday, but do not count on it being open
past 2200. If you find yourself stranded in the Yard due to impassable
roads, call the EOC and we will attempt to get you a ride.

Thanks for your attention and cooperation,

CDR Tom 'Katz' McKavitt, USN '83
Base Operations Officer
United States Naval Academy

A special message from your Moderators...

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of the Naval Academy: We are in the
midst of recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Isabel. Thankfully,
none of our midshipmen, faculty, staff, visiting Alumni or parents suffered
any injuries. However, the damage the Academy sustained from the 7.5 foot
storm surge, particularly to our electrical and mechanical infrastructure,
was significant. We are still assessing the extent of damage, but believe
full recovery will take months.

Bancroft Hall, King Hall, the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility, Dahlgren Hall,
Ricketts Hall, MacDonough Hall and the Halsey Field House suffered minor
water damage and have been restored to full operations. Mitscher Hall and
the majority of our academic buildings all received extensive water damage
from flooding. The basement labs in Chauvenet (chemistry) and Rickover
(engineering) were among the hardest hit. Hundreds of contractors and
Academy personnel undertook a Herculean effort, working around the clock for
72 hours, so that we were ready to resume makeshift classes on Monday 22
Sep, and continue our mission to develop midshipmen into future officers for
our Navy and Marine Corps.

We know many challenges await us as we progress to full recovery in the
weeks and months ahead. I am confident our Navy leadership will support us
with the resources we require. I ask for your support in being sensitive to
the significant impact this storm had on the Academy. Midshipmen, faculty,
staff and contractors continue to keep our collective focus on our mission
and overcoming setbacks caused by the hurricane.

Sincerely,
VADM Rodney P. Rempt,
Superintendent

A special message from your Moderators...

One of our Firstie Members, Susan Crouch, wrote to us earlier today on
behalf of her son, 1/C Midn. Collier Crouch who is Editor in Chief of the
2004 Edition of the Lucky Bag (The Naval Academy Year Book). She wanted all
of our Firstie Parents to know that the 2004 Lucky Bag is now accepting
orders FOR ADVERTISEMENTS in the 2004 edition.

As some of you know, each year, parents and friends of the Naval Academy are
invited to place congratulatory ads in the Lucky Bag. These range from
small ads which just say congratulations to full page ads with full color
photographs, etc. congratulating individual Mids, squads, Companies or the
entire Brigade of Midshipmen.

To obtain your copy of the Advertisement Order Form go to...
http://www.usna.edu/LuckyBag/parentads1.pdf

To see the Lucky Bag's web site you should visit
http://www.usna.edu/LuckyBag/

As you know, all Mids get a copy of the Lucky Bag each year. All Firsties
have their photos and biographies included. You will also find a schedule
of WHEN the photos will be taken for ALL Mids at...
http://www.usna.edu/LuckyBag/MID_pics.htm

It is MANDATORY that all Firsties and Plebes have portraits taken. The
Firstie portraits will go in the Lucky Bag. The Plebe photos will be
available for purchase by the Plebe or his/her parents. 2/C and Youngsters
MAY sign up to have portraits taken as well, according to the schedule
posted above. If you are interested in having portraits of your Youngster
or Second Class Mid, make sure you make them aware of the above schedule and
that they make arrangements to be there at the appointed time.

Ad space usually sells out before the final deadline for placing ads, so
please don't delay if you wish to participate.

[Please feel free to share THIS MESSAGE with any other parents and
Midshipmen who you know may be interested. All Firstie parents are not
members of our lists and may not know about this unless YOU take the time to
tell them.]

A special message from your Moderators...

Just a quick note to all of our USNA-Net Parents about Fund Drives.

As you all know, USNA-Net operates strictly on donations from our members
and we completed our 2003 Annual Fund Drive at the beginning of this month.
We raised our entire year's requirement of $7,700 in just 6 days!

USNA-Net is NOT looking for additional donations or funds until next
September.

We are able to keep our annual budget under such tight control by doing
everything we do for our members with an all volunteer staff. We have no
full time or part time employees nor do we use any paid consultants. It all
works so well (and so inexpensively) because we operate on an all volunteer
basis.

So thank you all for your past kindness and generosity. We will be looking
for your help again in September of 2004.

A special message from your Moderators...

Dear Navy Family,

Our USNA-Net lists were created to assist Parents in dealing with Parenting
issues, sharing Advice and Support from those with experience to those with
questions. So says our Mission Statement.

We are not a discussion forum on things not related to Navy Parenting and we
are certainly not a venue for general discussions of Academy Policy. The
current thread of discussion about Uniforms is one such topic.

We would respectfully request that ALL discussion of this subject be
abandoned. It is not our place to discuss the pros and cons of any decision
made by the USNA Administration.

Our purpose (our sole reason for existence) is to provide help to other
parents in dealing with having a Mid at the Academy. We are here to make
you life as a parent better and to assist you in understanding that your son
or daughter is first in the Navy and secondly attending the finest
educational institute in the world. We cannot do that if a few of our
members decide to rewrite our Mission Statement whenever it suits their
purpose.

There are other avenues for our members to use if they choose to voice
dissention but our lists are not here for that purpose. We have worked too
long and too hard to establish a relationship of cooperation and mutual
respect with the Academy to allow it to be tarnished in this way.

Please understand that the very fabric of our organization is based upon
parents helping parents. We do all of our members a huge disservice by
losing focus on our Mission.

Respectfully,

Mike Zets
