A special message from your Moderators...

To all,

Mike and I were so very pleased to be in Fed Ex field to witness that
inspiring win over Air Force on Saturday. He took pictures so that we could
share this day with you.

We tried to get as much as we could for you - the March On (with close-ups
of Company 4, Company 10 and the Color Guard) - the Prisoner Exchange
(notice the "Silly string" on the back of the Brigade Commander's jacket,
hastily sprayed there by one of the Air Force Cadets as he marched around to
the AF side...) - the coin toss, the D&B halftime performance - some game
shots - both team's Mascots - the cheerleaders - the singing of both team's
Alma Maters - and, of course, MIDS, MIDS, MIDS in the stands (you can see a
few Plebes performing push ups after the touchdowns - in the stands - since
they could not go onto the field). What a delightful day - one to remember.
I'm sorry we did not get the fly-over - which was awesome - it just happened
too quickly! Maybe someone else caught it for us?

If any of you have any shots you would like to share send them to me and I
will get them up as soon as I can. If you announce an on-line Albums I will
be sure to place the link on the photo page, as well.

To view these 45 new photos, simply go to the USNA-Net website:
www.usna-net.org and click onto "Photo Gallery" from the menu items on the
left side of the page. Then click onto "Navy vs. Air Force win" at the top
of the list of the latest photos!

I have full sized high resolution copies of all of the photos - so if you
think you see your Mid and would like a copy - just let me know!

Enjoy these!

Remember, if you do not see the link for the Navy/Air Force game photos at
the top of the "Photo Gallery" page, your browser is probably loading the
page from cache. You will need to hold down the "Control" key while you
click onto the "refresh" (or "reload") button in the browser's main menu.
That should force the latest page to load onto your browser. If you have
problems seeing this page - let me know.

A special message from your Moderators...

To all,

Recently, we have had to rethink our position on our Sports List. When it
was created in 1999, it seemed like a logical addition to our lists. The
premise was that the sports-minded among you would enjoy a list where you
could discuss -in detail - all manner of USNA sports in a place exclusively
for you.

Great idea, but in reality, it has not worked that way. In the past year,
there have been relatively few posts to the Sports list - and many posts
concerning sports have been sent, in error, to the Family list.

A dilemma...The only real traffic on the sports list occurs every year
around and concerning the Army/Navy game. There are many who firmly believe
(and rightfully so) that this event is more tradition than sport - and
involves us all in a way that no other sporting contest can). In between
this, is a smattering of posts concerning all manner of Navy Sports.

I think we can all agree on one thing - we are here to find out about, and
to participate in (however remotely) our Mid's USNA experience - ALL aspects
of that experience. Navy sports, whether it is on the varsity level, the
club level, or the intramural level, is a part of every Midshipman's life.

We have tried to keep a black and white policy on the posts about sports -
all sports related posts - regardless of whether or not it discussed the
actual competition (tailgating, fan commentary, sports bets, travel to, etc)
belonged on the Sports list. This created a bit of confusion.

So, the USNA-Net Board of Advisors decided to eliminate the Sports List. We
have removed the mention of it from the Rules, and from the USNA-Net
website. You may now post your sports or sports related messages to the
Family list at usna-family@usna-net.org . We hope that you will enjoy this
change.

Of course there is an exception - isn't there always? :>) The rule against
trying to buy or sell tickets on the lists is STILL in place, as is asking
for commercial endorsements. These things can only be sent to our Member's
Only Classifieds page.

How about that? One less list to worry about!! :>)

A special message from your Moderators...

Dear '04 Parents,

We have received an urgent request for your assistance from The
Editor-in-Chief of the Lucky Bag (the USNA Yearbook). It seems that in the
first three days during which your sons and daughters we scheduled to have
their photographs taken for the Lucky Bag only 89 Firsties have done so. At
this rate, the photographers will NOT be able to complete the task in the
time allotted for taking the pictures which ends at the end of next week.
They have 900 more Portraits to take and only 7 days in which to do it.

PLEASE contact your Firstie and do everything within your power to make sure
that he/she gets their portrait taken ASAP. Do whatever it takes to coerce
them to cooperate with this effort but get them there. Make sure that they
don't wait to the last minute. Portraits taken now will get better results
than those rushed through on the last couple of days. Photographers are
only human.

While you're at it, encourage your Firstie to nag his classmates to do the
same. We do not reach all of the parents of the Class of '04. At present
we only have 514 members from that class. So it is even more important that
those we can reach via our lists, not only get their Firstie to get their
portrait taken, your Firstie has to get one or two other Firsties to do the
same.

Thanks for your cooperation and assistance.

A special message from your Moderators...

On Friday, a message was sent by no less than three members to our lists
about a V1RUS which was supposed to be undetectable by AV software and gave
explicit instructions on how to rid yourself of this problem.

THIS WARNING WAS A HOAX.

If you got rid of the file as instructed, don't worry because the file was
used in debugging Java Applications which most of you will never have to do
unless you are a Java Developer/Programmer.

HOWEVER, it is important that you realize that this COULD have been a very
damaging thing to do, if the file you got rid of was an important file. It
could have wiped out your entire computer's hard drive with all of its
files, rendering it a useless pile of hardware that would have taken an
expert to restore and you could have LOST every single file, picture and
message contained in your entire system. All because you read and believed
an email message.

If the sender had maliciously substituted any one of a number of IMPORTANT
or VITAL files, you would have been toast.

The three members who did this have been told that this was a severe
violation of our Rules of Operation which specifically forbid passing on
V1RUS warnings on our lists. But I want you to be aware of what happened
and why YOU should never do this either.

V1RUS warning messages are ALWAYS HOAXES! Microsoft, McAffee, and Norton
don't send out messages like this. They automatically update their software
to recognize V1RUSES and not allow them to come on to your computer in the
first place. If you receive an email telling you about something that they
can't fix, it's a HOAX. We have a page on our web site where you can look
up real V1RUSES and HOAXES BEFORE you get rid of files or otherwise damage
your computer or its operating system software. Just look in the Site
Index. It's there. Under "V"

Lastly, an explanation of why you received this message in the first place.
Our automated filters WERE set to search the first 40 lines of a message for
any and all words and phrases on what we call the Taboo Word list. Several
of the words in this particular message would normally have triggered a
rejection because we have all of the particular terms involved in this hoax
on our Taboo word list. If a Taboo word is found, we reject the message to
the Moderators for their attention. In the case of the particular message,
the sender passed it along with over 40 lines of email addresses from
previous transmissions at the top of the text of the message. By the time
our filters got done checking 40 lines, the message with the actual taboo
words in it, had yet to be read. We have modified the filters to now check
for over twice that length of message. We shouldn't see that message or any
others like it go through to our membership again.

REMEMBER.... Don't pass that sort of junk on to everyone in your address
book. If this message had been malicious (instead of a minor prank) those
three members who thoughtlessly sent it to our lists in violation of our
Rules could have destroyed hundreds of our members computers. This is
downright irresponsible.

Always take this sort of thing with EXTREME CAUTION. It's better to be safe
rather than sorry.

It took Sandi and I this long to respond because we were traveling this
weekend to Sandi's homecoming and were away from our computers for three
days. Richard Albrecht rose to the occasion and made sure that things were
in hand and sent a response to the list clarifying it on Friday Afternoon,
just a few minutes after the first of the three warnings was sent out.

Another note... Make sure you read ALL of your day's mail before you react
to any one particular message. If you had, most of you would have seen
Richard's response before you went looking for the fake V1RUS.

A special message from your Moderators...

"Open Doors: Vietnam POWs Thirty Years Later," a special museum exhibit, is
on display at the United States Naval Academy Museum from October 14, 2003
through November 1, 2003. The exhibit is made up of sepia-tone photographs
and narrative profiles honoring 30 former Vietnam POWs. The exhibit has
traveled throughout the United States and will be on display at the Naval
Academy Museum (Preble Hall) during normal operating hours (9:00 a.m. to
5:00 p.m., Monday - Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday).

Nine Naval Academy graduates are featured in this special exhibit including,
VADM James B. Stockdale, USN (Ret.), Class of 1947; RADM Jeremiah Denton,
USN (Ret.), Class of 1947; VADM William P. Lawrence, USN (Ret.), Class of
1951; CAPT Edwin Arthur Shuman, USN (Ret.), Class of 1954; VADM Edward H.
Martin, USN (Ret.), Class of 1954; CAPT John H. Fellowes, USN (Ret.), Class
of 1956; The Honorable John S. McCain, Class of 1958; CAPT John Michael
McGrath, USN (Ret.) Class of 1962; CDR Paul E. Galanti, USN (Ret.), Class of
1962.

Taylor Baldwin Kiland, daughter of Ingolf N. Kiland Jr. (USNA '59) and Jamie
Howren Quinn, wife of John Quinn (USNA '91) sought to document in photos and
narratives how 30 of these men rebuilt their lives personally and
professionally upon their return. The title, "Open Doors: Vietnam POWs
Thirty Years Later" is based on the moving quote made by CDR Paul Galanti:
"There is no such thing as a bad day when you have a door knob on the inside
of the door."

Open Doors, hosted by the Coronado Museum of History and Art in Coronado,
Calif., has been traveling across the country throughout the calendar year
that coincides with the 30th anniversary of the POWs' return from Hanoi.

A small group of us had the pleasure of a private showing of the exhibit
prior to its opening. Not only is Taylor and Jamie's work a fitting tribute
to our Vietnam POW's, but the Naval Academy is a fitting place to honor them
as many of them are Naval Academy graduates who served selflessly and
returned home with honor. What makes this work unique is its focus on the
challenges and opportunities they encountered over the last 30 years. We are
proud to announce this unique exhibit to you and strongly encourage you,
your shipmates and classmates, friends and neighbors to view it firsthand.
If you are only in town for one weekend this year (and it happens to be
Homecoming or President's Circle), I urge you to drop by Preble Hall. While
at the Museum, please take time to view the other exhibits made possible
through class gifts.

Go Navy (and Army, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine)!

================================================================

     2. Infections abound - It's FLU season again.

That's right. At least two of our members are currently infected with a
COMPUTER V1RUS and continue to attempt to spread it to others every time
they turn on their computers. I know that you are saying, "It can't be ME."
Bullhockey! It's somebody and if you don't have current Anti-V1RUS software
installed, it may very well be YOU! You can find AV software at any local
electronics store for around thirty dollars and it really will prevent your
computer from being damaged by malicious infections PLUS... It will stop
you from sending out a copy of the danged bug to everyone in your address
book EVERY time you turn your computer on. I should know. I get several
dozen such infected emails every week. On some days, I get six to ten in
one evening. YOU ARE INFECTED. It's just that with the newest bugs, we
can't tell who you are - just that you're sending out copies of the bug to
everyone in your address book - your family, your Mid, and other members on
our lists.

PLEASE behave responsibly and install or update your AV software TODAY.
================================================================

        3. How do I.... ??? - Changing your Email with USNA-Net.

>From time to time, a number of you ask ... "How do I go about changing my
email address in your system?" It's easy. Just send us an email from your
OLD address telling us your full name, your OLD ADDRESS and your NEW
ADDRESS. It takes us about 5 seconds to affect the change, if you just send
us those three pieces of information.

Please do not wait until you old address is out of order and your old
service is rejecting your mail for weeks. Do it as soon as the new address
is functioning. Oh! and PLEASE don't cancel out the old address and then
later resubmit a new application for membership. That causes a lot more
work for us. Just a short email with your full name, the Old address and
the New address is all that's needed.

AND... Please remember to NEVER send such administrative requests to the
lists. Send them to Moderator@USNA-Net.org instead.
================================================================

        4. A Web Site for YOUR Club.

A reminder that USNA-Net provides FREE Web Hosting and Domain Registration
for your local Parents Club. No strings attached. Your own Domain Name
(www.yourclubname.org) will be registered for you and you will have a place
of your own on our USNA-Net server to put your club's web site.

We already host 26 of the 40 web sites that exist today and we're adding
four more brand new sites in the next few weeks. All for FREE. Just drop
us a note at mike@usna.org and we'll get you all the details and explain how
all of it works. All you have to supply is the webmaster to design and
maintain the content of your web site. Does your Club spend a small fortune
on printing and mailing out newsletters and reminders? Why not put those
things on a web site and tell your members about new stuff on your club's
web site via email? You can save a ton of money that way. Web sites are
FULL COLOR and don't require a penny in postage. You can change them
whenever you like and as often as you like.

If your club wants to finally join the computer age, drop us a note and find
out how simple it really can be.
================================================================

        5. Rule Reasons - Commercial Content.

Each time we send out one of these newsletters we like to include a little
something explaining one of our Rules of Operation so that our members
better understand the Reasons behind the Rules. This time, it's our ban on
Commercial Content.

Our Rules prohibit anything being sent to our lists which offer anything For
Sale or Wanted to Buy, Trade or Give Away items. It also prohibits ASKING
FOR FAVORS or information on any sort of Personal or Commercial Goods or
Services in messages to any of our lists.

We have had this rule in place since our very beginning in 1998 for a number
of good reasons but the most important reason is that we just don't want to
become another source of junk email in your inbox. If you're like the rest
of us, we already get too many messages every day offering to sell us
everything from Viagra to a second mortgage. We just don't need any more.

Then you have to remember that we have many members who are Parents or
Sponsors who own and operate local businesses in the Annapolis area. We
prohibit them from using our lists to advertise their businesses (except in
the Classifieds) and we want to insure that we keep things on a level
playing field. It would be totally unfair to not allow them to advertise
their business and yet allow other members to mention their competitors to
our entire membership or give endorsements for Goods or Services which hurts
our own members.

We are over 3,000 USNA Families. Recommendations and endorsements can get
out of hand pretty quickly with first one members recommending this place to
buy something and then another recommending a different place to buy this or
that. We told you earlier that our Classified Ads had requests for over 100
Army/Navy tics. They also have 74 individual advertisements for a host of
different things. Imagine if all those members had sent their messages to
the Family list (may be more than once) instead of following the rules and
placing those ads in our Classifieds. You would have been buried with
messages soliciting you to buy their wares or looking for something to buy.

If each of our members sent just one such email only once per semester, you
would find 16 such messages in your inbox EVERY DAY and our server would
have to send out 18 MILLION extra messages in a year's time. That's a ton
of junk email that doesn't belong in your inbox. We understand that and use
our server's automated filters to stop as much of it as possible before it
ever reaches you. Using the USNA-Net Classified Ads keeps it all together
where our members can find it quickly and saves your inbox from just that
much more junk email.

But to make sure that it all works, we need you to USE and READ the
Classified Ads regularly. Help another member by offering your extra items
for sale there and by buying things from other members when at all possible.
After all, that's what USNA-Net is all about... Parents Helping Other
Parents.

Go Navy

NAVAL ACADEMY ANNOUNCES GROUNDBREAKING OF THE COMMODORE URIAH P. LEVY CENTER
AND JEWISH CHAPEL

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Marking a unique moment in history, Naval Academy
midshipmen, faculty staff and Friends of the Jewish Chapel donors and
invited guests will celebrate groundbreaking of The Commodore Uriah P. Levy
Center and Jewish Chapel, Sunday, Nov. 2, at 1:30 p.m., behind Mitscher Hall
on Academy grounds.

As supporters of religious and cultural enrichment programs for midshipmen
for many years, the FOJC (an Annapolis-based, non-profit, tax exempt
foundation) has raised more than 12.8 million dollars to build, maintain and
provide a program endowment for the Levy Center and Jewish Chapel. The east
wing of the facility will feature a 412-seat sanctuary while the west wing
will provide a focal point for the Academy's ethics curriculum, fostering
principles of high moral character, leadership and religious freedom within
the Brigade of Midshipmen. The west wing will include classrooms and
meeting spaces, a media center, library, canteen, the Academy's Honor Court,
office spaces, conference and study areas.

The Levy Center and Jewish Chapel is a significant link connecting Jewish
Midshipmen today to American Jewish history and the history of the United
States Navy. The Center honors the contributions of all American Jews who
have served and who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in order to protect our
freedoms.
