NAVY CROSS COUNTRY TEAM TO HONOR WILLLIE MCCOOL ON FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF
SPACE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA TRAGEDY

ANNAPOLIS, Md.-The Navy cross country team would like to invite the general
public to join them in a three mile walk on the Navy cross country (USNA
Golf Course) course that will commemorate the life of Astronaut Willie
McCool ('83) on Sunday, Feb. 1 at 8:50 a.m.

The walk will start at the future site of his memorial, which is based on
his best time of 24:47 and being "15 minutes from home" as the Space Shuttle
Columbia was before the tragic accident.

The walk will take approximately 30 minutes and will commence at exactly
8:59 a.m., which is the same time that last contact was made with Columbia
on Feb. 1, 2003.

For more information please contact head men's cross country coach, Al
Cantello, at cantello@usna.edu

We received this this afternoon and felt that our members would benefit from
hearing this news first hand. It seems that the criteria for the Selection
of Academic Majors has changed slightly.

Please remember that we are not passing this on for the purposes of opening
a discussion about the "right or wrong" of this change in Academy Policy.
We simply wish to make our members the best informed possible.

==== Original Message ====

21 January 2004
From: W. C. Miller, USNA Academic Dean and Provost

Major Selection for the Class of 2007 and Subsequent

Background. The Secretary of the Navy the Honorable Gordon England and the
Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Vern Clark have expressed a need for a
larger number of newly commissioned ensigns who have completed technical
majors in college in order to prepare these new officers for subsequent
assignments in the world's most technically advanced Navy. At the Naval
Academy, this increasing demand for technically educated ensigns will be
reflected in increasing percentages of USNA graduating classes selecting
technical majors; that is, those offered by the Divisions of Engineering &
Weapons and Mathematics & Science.

Class of 2007 Guidance. At least 64% of the midshipmen in the current
midshipman fourth class will be required to select technical majors when
members of the class select their academic majors in March 2004. Every
effort will be made to give each midshipman his or her first choice in
academic major; nevertheless, if fewer than 64% of midshipmen in the class
select technical majors as their first choice in March, some midshipmen will
be required to enroll in their second choice of major. For example, earlier
this month almost 200 members of the fourth class selected Political Science
as their initial preference for an academic major. The Naval Academy does
not have the resources to teach that many students in a single major, so
some of those midshipmen in 2007 who selected Political Science as their
initial preference must find another major.

Selecting an Academic Major. In considering which academic majors to
indicate as your first and second choices in March, ensure that you give
careful consideration to both choices and that at least one of your
preferences is from among the technical majors offered at USNA. Consider
your performance in courses you have already taken at the Academy, as well
as your SAT test performance, as indicators of your potential strengths.
Honestly appraise your interests: Are you going to enjoy spending the
majority of your subsequent Naval Academy time studying either one of these
majors? If your first choice is a non-technical major, have you selected as
your second choice a technical major in which you can succeed at USNA? Talk
to your academic advisors. Visit the departments you are considering; most
of them are planning open house presentations of information that could
prove very useful to you, but you are welcome anytime. Make a thoughtful
choice. While I encourage you to discuss options with your upper class
midshipmen, be aware that the classes of 2006 and earlier have selected
majors and will complete their studies under a different set of rules. We
will provide you more information on this topic as you approach the time to
make your selection.

A special message from your Moderators...

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It's that time of year again with Service Selections just a few days away
and not much else for your Mids to do besides study and attend classes, with
daytime temps in the teens and snow keeping everyone cooped up.

It's time for rumors to fly. This time of year is always resplendent with
every rumor imaginable flying unchecked from 1st Wing to 8th, from Hospital
Point to Rip Miller Field. The truth might even be found somewhere in any
one of them but that's not what we're here to accomplish.

USNA-Net is a service designed solely for PARENTS to seek Advice and Support
about parenting issues. We're not here to be "Rumor Central," reporting on
and attempting to confirm or deny this or that rumor. Nor are we a source
of information about the validity of anything which your Midshipman may have
heard between classes or in the Weight Room about Midshipman Attrition or
the motives of the Department of the Navy with regard to Junior Officer
Retention. All of these rumors are outside the scope of our organization's
Mission Statement.

We would beg our membership to remember why we're here and to help each
other deal with the frustrations and joys of being a parent of a Midshipman.
We will have ample opportunity in a few days as Service Selections are
announced and some rejoice while others wonder what to do as they miss the
cut for their "first choice" and look at a much different future than the
one they had planned for so many years.

Be mindful of all of our members as we discuss Service Selections. Remember
that kindness, encouragement and understanding are the best medicine in
times of disappointment.

In the meantime, remember that rumors are just that... rumors. Most are
figments of the Dark Ages mentality on the Yard and should be dismissed
outright. Encourage your Mid to do the same. Nothing positive comes from
passing on rumors and gossip, not at home, not at the Academy.

Here's wishing all of our Firsties the very best this week.

Respectfully,

Mike Zets

A special message from your Moderators...

We've stopped hiding your light under our bushel.

In an effort to make our web site as beneficial to our members as possible,
we've made a small but significant change to our Classified Ad page.

The Advertisements are now OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC to read all of the
ads. Previously, only members could read the ads.

We haven't changed who may place an ad. As in the past, ONLY MEMBERS MAY
PLACE ADS. This hasn't changed.

Now, when you place an ad, a whole lot more individuals will be able to see
it. After all, how many members own a home that they might rent to a fellow
member for Commissioning Week? With the new setup, many more area residents
will be able to find our members who wish to rent or sell or whatever.

By limiting who may PLACE AN AD, we still retain the true benefit of
membership for our USNA-Net members.

As always, we encourage all of our members to read the Classifieds and now,
we also encourage all of you to tell your fellow parents and friends
(members or not) to stop by our web site and check up on what new in the
Classifieds.

You will still need a user name and password to place an ad but it's now a
heck of a lot easier for everyone to read our members' ads. Please check
out the Classified today. The link is in the Main Menu on the left of the
Main Page. Just look between Photo Gallery and Countdown Clocks.

Enjoy...

A special message from your Moderators...

I don't know whether to sigh in resignation or to be angry that it's
happening again. Yesterday, a new virus was launched in the internet email
community by some sicko who will probably never be found and prosecuted.
If they ever do catch one of these perverted idiots who write viruses, I
suggest they draw and quarter him on live worldwide TV.

The virus is called W32/Mydoom@MM and it has been assigned a risk value of
HIGH for users of MS Windows Operating Systems. Mac Users are immune.

The email comes in an attachment to a file with only one line in the body of
the message...
"The message contains Unicode characters and has been sent as a binary
attachment."

It has also been seen attached to blank email with only a few words in the
subject line.

DON'T OPEN ATTACHMENTS !!!

Now for the reason I'm so upset...

I have repeatedly told all of our members to get and install up-to-date
AntiVirus Software on their computers. Well, as usual, a few of you have
shrugged their shoulders and ignored this advice. And as usual, several of
our MEMBERS ARE NOW INFECTED. How do I know, because I got 37 copies of the
virus before midnight yesterday and over FIFTY more of them in the last 12
hours!!!!

If you saw this message and opened the attached file, you got infected. AND
you're sending out copy after copy of the danged thing to everyone in your
address book for as long as your computer is turned on since you got
infected.

Once infected you don't have to be connected to the internet. You just have
to turn on your computer. The virus will dial up or connect to the internet
on its own. It even has its own Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
client so that it can send mail without using your email program.

Sigh.

So I guess what I want to know is... How is someone with enough high
quality genetic "stuff" to have and raise one of the smartest kids in the
entire US, so careless that they would run a computer without up-to-date
Anti-Virus Software??? It boggles the mind that anyone could be that
indifferent in spite of all the warning we've give to our members no a
regular basis.

If you are reading this message and don't have UP-TO-DATE AntiVirus software
running all the time on your computer, do us all a favor. Please get it and
install it TODAY. You can find it at any Electronics or Computer store in
your area.

Remember, it's not a matter of IF you get infected. It's just a matter of
WHEN you will be infected. Then you'll be spreading the virus to everyone
in your address book from Grandma to your Mid. Even to other members.
Everyone whose address is in your computer.

Please be a responsible member of this network.

To those members who have AV software and keep it up to date... THANK YOU
!!! Please forgive this intrusion. No response is necessary. Thanks
again.

PS... In the time it took me to write this letter, I received 26 more
copies of the MyDoom virus from infected members. Be Smart. Be protected.
Get you AV software and keep it up to date. - Mike

A special message from your Moderators...

Just a follow up to my note a few days back about the new MyDoom virus.

We still have several members who are currently infected. From the
frequency and timing of the copies that we are getting here, at least one of
you is connected for long periods each day over a DSL or Cable Modem.

Please, if you don't have up-to-date virus protection running right now,
ASSUME that you are infected and go get an AV program today. Or at least do
us all a favor and turn off your computer until you do.

On the 26th, the first day this virus was spreading, I personally received
143 copies of it from people who got infected and had either my email
address or the address of one of our USNA-Net lists in their address book.
Sandi got about 1/3 that many sent to her directly by infected members.
This was by far the worst episode of virus attack we've ever seen.

Please note... NOT ONE INFECTED EMAIL ATTACHMENT was sent out to our
members via our lists. Our servers are incapable of forwarding attachments.
This is NOT the case with all mailing lists that are out there. Some
actually do permit members to send attachments to each other via their lists
and so it IS POSSIBLE for you to get infected by an attachment sent to you
via these irresponsible mailing lists. Be careful!

KaZaA FILE SHARING SOFTWARE...
Also, if you or one of your kids has KaZaA file sharing software loaded on
your computer (used by most to download MUSIC files), this new virus will be
IMPORTED via this software into your computer. It can spread through this
program bypassing your AV software completely. Check your computer today to
see if one of your family has loaded KaZaA file sharing software onto your
computer. Besides the fact that most uses of this software are for the
illegal downloading and sharing of stolen music files, this program will
download and install the virus through a backdoor that your AV software is
powerless to stop.

Please scan your computer for this virus today.
