A special message from your Moderators...

<<< Dear Mike & Sandi, I checked our email and noted that we got an email
from OURSELVES with a virus attached. We sent no such email. To
complicate matters more, there was a response from someone saying that we
had sent THEM a virus, too. We have up-to-date AV software. We ran a full
scan and don't have a virus. What gives? >>>

The way all of the latest generation of viruses work is that they FORGE the
return address of all the email they send out from an infected computer.
They do this by picking an email address at random from the infected
computer's address book and assigning that address as the FROM address of
all the email they send out.

The virus then proceeds to send out a copy (sometimes many copies) to each
name in the infected computer's address book for as long as that computer is
on.

What all this means is that your email address is in "someone's" address
book and THAT computer is infected. Your email address was the "lucky one"
selected by the virus to use as the FROM address and the virus sent all of
the people in that address book (including lucky you) a copy of the email
which said it was from you.

You didn't send the email. Someone else did using your name as the FROM
address. It was received by another person who doesn't understand this
FORGING process and who then sent you an email telling you that you sent
them a virus.

Now that you know how this works, all you can do is ignore the warning
message from the other guy which was probably generated automatically by
their virus software. Just make sure that you have up-to-date data files
for your own virus software.

Also... Don't worry about USNA-Net, we stay a HUGE step ahead of these
viruses by stripping and discarding ALL attachments (and Rich Text
Formatting) on all email sent to our lists. You can't get a virus in an
email that REALLY comes from USNA-Net. (Authentic email from USNA-Net will
always have our FOOTER at the bottom of every real message.) But... You
can get a virus from an infected computer that uses us in their forged FROM
address but really comes from some other infected computer.

Be wary of ALL attachments, even those which come from someone you may know
and trust !!!

Install AV Software and keep it up to date.

PS. Did you know that the factory (default) setting on McAffee AV software
checks for new updates every 5 minutes? That's a lot more often than once a
week which is what some uninformed techno-wanna-be's may tell you is often
enough. While you may not feel you have to check every 5 minute, with new
viruses and variants coming out daily, once a week is NOT often enough. - MZ

A special message from your Moderators...

As we approach '04 Commissioning Week, we'd like to remind all of our
members that you can still find homes in the Annapolis area to rent if
you're looking into that option rather then staying at a local hotel.

In an effort to assist our Firstie members, we have updated our Parents'
Handbook on our web site at www.USNA.org and added several resources to help
you find a house, condo or apartment to rent for Comm Week '04.

The newest of these links is from an organization that has a dozen or so
homes listed RIGHT NOW in the immediate Annapolis Area. All of their
listings are complete with Exterior and Interior Photos plus a complete
description of the property. It's really professionally done and soooo
useful to those of you who live too far away to do anything but the minimum
in the way of inspection visits before you actually rent.

So if you're in the market for a house, condo or apartment look for the new
section on the INFORMATION page of our Parents' Handbook. OR... Go to the
page directly...

http://www.usna-net.org/handbook/info.html#homes

PS. Some of these homes are also available for PARENTS' WEEKENDS, REUNIONS,
the BOAT SHOWS and FOOTBALL WEEKENDS. Check them out.

Go Navy...

A special message from your Moderators...

We wanted to pass along a warning to our members about a NEW EMAIL SCAM that
the FCC issued a warning about today on TechTV.

Among all the spam (unsolicited email) that you receive, you may get a very
official looking email message telling you about a NATIONAL DO NOT EMAIL WEB
SITE !!!

THIS IS A HOAX ! There is no such thing as a place to register to prevent
you from getting unsolicited email. In fact, the web site (whose address we
will not disclose here.) does exactly the opposite. When you give them you
email address, ostensibly to prevent others from sending you email, they
take your email address and sell it to hundreds of others so that you get
even MORE spam.

So if you see this NEW HOAX email. Simply delete it. Do not go to their
web site and PLEASE don't give them your email address. There is no such
thing as a National Do Not Email Registry.

It is a complete hoax designed to scam you out of your email address.

Stay safe, Install AntiVirus Software today, NEVER OPEN EMAIL ATTACHMENTS
and NEVER GIVE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS TO STRANGERS on the Internet no matter how
official they appear.

===============================================
This email MAY be forwarded to anyone (including your Mid) who
you feel may be interested in its content without asking permission.

This Message may not be shared with any non-member!
Remember, your Mid is NOT a member of this list.
=========================================

They are ALL coming from some member whose computer is infected with a
virus, but who has member email addresses and list email addresses in their
Address Book. You need not be concerned about any of THESE messages - the
attachment has been stripped - so there is no danger of you getting an
infection from our lists.

HOWEVER, be diligent about ANY attachments that you receive directly from
someone else - even if they look like they come from a trusted friend or
relative.

Again, your only real defense for these viruses is to install and use
up-to-date anti-virus software.

A special message from your Moderators...

We hate to harp about the same thing, over and over, but if you don't have
up-to-date AntiVirus software installed, you will probably regret that
decision very soon.

We still have a handful of members who are not protected and who are
infected. While we can't identify which members are infected (the viruses
forge the return addresses of email they send out making it impossible to
determine WHO is infected), we still get several copies each time an
infected computer is turned on. So we know that a few of our current (or
former) members are infected right now.

The newest variation of the MyDoom Virus (F) now erases files at random from
your Hard Drive. This is a NEW feature of the virus. While the earlier
versions would happily send out copies of itself and never really cause any
damage to the infected computers, the latest version will KILL the infected
computer.

Sooooo... You'd better install an up-to-date copy of Antivirus Software
(Norton or McAfee must be purchased for a fee - AVG software is a free
download for non-commercial use available at
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php)

Beware! Now, if you open an attachment and catch the virus, it WILL destroy
your computer. Now it's not a matter of IF you get infected. It's only a
matter of WHEN you get infected.

No one is safe without AV software.

Remember, having up-to-date AV software is a requirement for your
participation in USNA-Net as a responsible member of our Navy Community.

Do your part to keep our corner of cyberspace virus free.
