A special message from your Moderators...

Here we go again. There is a NEW virus circulating which tries to convince
you that it comes from YOUR Internet Service Provider and that there will be
some sort of problem with YOUR email service if you don't open the attached
file immediately.

DON"T FALL FOR IT. The attachment is a Virus and opening it will infect
your computer with the Bagel virus. It will be hard to resist the
temptation to open this attachment but if you do open it, you'll be
infected. I know that this message looks like it is OFFICIAL but it's not.
It's a Virus and is trying to trick you into getting infected.

How do I know about this? I've already received several copies from members
who have already succumbed. MY AntiVirus Software updated itself twice
today. Is yours up to date?

I only wish there was a way to determine WHO is infected but the way these
new viruses work prevents the recipient from knowing who sent the message.
The return address is faked on all of these messages.

Please be careful. Your Internet Service Provider is NOT sending out
notices about your service.

Go Navy...

A special message from your Moderators...

Times are getting busier here at USNA-Net. Just as surely as Maple sap is
flowing in Vermont, this time of year brings an influx of new Plebe Parents
('08's) and lots more work for your USNA-Net staff.

I thought it would be a good time to ask our members for a bit of
consideration to help ease our work load.

QUOTING THE ORIGINAL MESSAGE...
For some time now we have been systematically trying to reduce the number of
REPLIES which include the entire ORIGINAL message in their response.
Duplicating the original message in your reply, doubles or even triples the
length of the reply and really mucks up our Archives with duplicitous hits
when our search function is used.

For the past several months, we have been manually stripping the Original
message from replies which quoted the original and then sending on the
reply, sans original. With message volume growing, we won't be able to do
that any more.

>From now on, messages which include the entire original message in their
reply will simply be rejected by our server's automated filters. So please
set your "Preferences" to NOT quote the Original Message in your replies to
our lists. If you need instructions on how to do this write to me at
Moderator@USNA-Net.org and we'll be happy to tell you how. Just tell me
what email program you're using when you ask.

SIGNING YOUR MAIL...
By way of tradition on these lists, all of our members are asked to sign
each email they send to USNA-Net with their Own Name (first and last) along
with their hometown and state, their Mid's first name and grad year/company
number. Like so....

Mary Smith
Anytown, OH
John '05/25

This is the minimum that simple netiquette demands. A few members also
include a Mid's sports or major which is OK but let's not get carried away.

ALSO... Unless you both actually sat down and typed your message, please
don't sign your message with a combined "John and Mary Smith." Husband and
wife teams are nice but we'd like to know which of you is the actual author.

USE THE CORRECT LIST...
Please make sure that you address your messages to the correct list. Plebe
Stuff (currently ALL '07 & '08 related topics) belong on
USNA-Plebe@USNA-Net.org. No exceptions. Likewise, all religious references,
Prayer Requests and such should be sent to USNA-Prayer@USNA-Net.org. We
have tons of upper-class and Plebe parents who belong to more than one list
and it is important that we keep things straight.

SHARING YOUR RESPONSES...
As a simple matter of courtesy, we ask that you please consider replying TO
THE LIST rather than privately when you answer a question. While most of
our members don't ask a question, that doesn't mean that they don't want to
hear your answer. Please share your responses with our lists rather than
always replying in private. That's what these lists are for. Without that
shared Advice and Support, there wouldn't be a USNA-Net.

CHANGES OF ADDRESS...
If you need to change your email address, PLEASE follow these
instructions...

Send your request for a change of address FROM your OLD address and tell
us your full name and NEW email address. Do it on the day you want the
change to take effect. There are over 3,000 of you and if you each changed
your address only once in nine years, Sandi and I would get about one a day,
every day of the year.

DO NOT use the Subscription form on our web site to change your address.
Doing so causes more work than is necessary. And remember, USNA-Net does
not support subscriptions which use Hotmail or Yahoo style anonymous web
based email addresses. We require regular POP3 email accounts.

ADDING or DROPPING A LIST...
If you wish to add or drop a list from your subscription, send us an email
FROM your address under which you currently receive USNA-Net email and just
tell us to add or drop this or that list. Again, please don't use the
subscription form to affect these changes. It really does cause extra work.

If you want to be taken off of the Plebe list, now is the time to request
removal. Message traffic on the Plebe list will only get heavier as I-Day
approaches.

LASTLY...
As we go through the Spring, all of the local Parents' Clubs will be
locating incoming '08 parents and we ask that each of you introduce them to
USNA-Net as they arrive on your radar screens. Remember that the ONLY way
we locate new parents is by word of mouth from current members. If YOU
don't recruit the Class of '08, just think of how much they will be missing.
And it will be your fault. Help them to find our www.USNA.org web site as
early as possible.

Thanks to one and all for your cooperation,

A special message from your Moderators...

Fellow Parents...

It is going to be a VERY long Spring if we keep forgetting that ALL Plebe
topics belong on the USNA-Plebe list. We have a separate list for Plebe
discussions because we have a large number of upper-class parents who have
chosen to not participate in Plebe related issues.

Think of sending a Plebe topic to the Family list like lighting up a cigar
in a non-smoking section of a restaurant. It's not only against our Rules
but it's the sort of thing that really other members who know and abide by
our rules. We have a separate place for such things and everyone expects
all of our members to be courteous enough to respect that separation.

Remember, just because you read something about plebes on the family list,
doesn't mean that it's OK to post a response to that message on the wrong
list, as well. If it is a plebe issue, it should always be sent to the
plebe list.

Our Plebe list currently has 1,820 member of which only 892 are actually
Plebe families. That means that we have almost a thousand upper-class
families on the Plebe list to act as mentors to the '07's and '08's. But...
It also means that there are 1,100+ members of the Family list who have
opted OUT of the Plebe list because they no longer wish to be involved in
"Boxers vs Briefs" or "Go vs Stay Home" discussions on the Plebe list.

Please remember that the Plebe list exists for the benefit of Plebe Parents
and we all have a responsibility to use it for these discussions and keep
our Family list for other things.

Respectfully,

Mike Zets

A special message from your Moderators...

A couple of days ago I was looking for something in my email files and came
across a message from me to the group dated 3/24/2003 - almost a year ago to
the day. It was announcing the fact that our www.USNA.org web site had just
recorded it's 600,000th visitor. Remarkable.

Yet, as I write this today, that same web counter recorded its 900,000th
visitor to our web site. That's 300,000 visitors in less than a year. That
about 835 visitors every day for the whole year. Pretty impressive for a
site that is only of interest to a small number of people.

In the prior year, we had an impressive 231,450 visitors but our visitation
rate grew 30% from the year before to last year. And...

Our Membership has grown proportionately. We now have just over 3,000
families subscribed. In March of 2003 we had 2,350 families on our lists.
We're really looking forward to the influx of new '08 parents this year.
And...

Let's not forget the Local Parents Club Web Sites that our organization
hosts at no charge or obligation. We now sponsor 28 of the 42 known
Parents' Club web sites across the country from Washington State to Florida
with several more in the works including a joint web site for several of the
smaller Florida Clubs. And...

Then there's our Web Site and Message Archives. The year old message
mentioned 600 pages on the web site and 10 Million words in the Message
Archives. A check of our archives shows they have grown to 16 Million word
and our web site now encompasses 674 pages of information. Don't forget
that BOTH our Web Site AND our Archives are searchable. And...

We did all this as an organization. We need to acknowledge the help and
support of our Technical Advisor, Richard Albrecht (Meredith '04) and our
Admin Advisors, Linnane Haley (DJ Bodden '04) & Sandra Skelton (Sponsor Mom
to many). AND, of course, we couldn't have done any of this without you,
our members who have shown your support for our Navy Family over the years.

We've come a long way from those humble beginnings way back in 1997 when a
handful of web masters got together via email and started passing advice and
support between members. AND...

It just keeps growing. Make sure that you do YOUR share to help the
organization keep on growing. Help us by recruiting an '08 Parent this
Spring. Someone tapped you on the shoulder and told you about www.USNA.org.
Now return the favor and find another parent who needs us just as much or
more.

Thanks for a great year and a big THANKS to our 900,000th Visitor, whoever
you were.

A special message from your Moderators...

So that you can keep track of just how many of your fellow parents belong to
USNA-Net, we've added a new High Tech feature to our web site. Now when you
go to our main page, you can click on a pair of new links that appear just
above the Visitor Counter in the lower left corner of the main page.

They are called "List Numbers" and "Class Numbers." All you have to do is
click on those links for the very latest, most up to date, enrollment data.

Now as you tell others about us, you can show them just how many fellow
Parents belong to our organization. "List Numbers" show the daily count of
how many families belong to each list while "Class Numbers" reports the
number of families from each class who belong to USNA-Net.

We've omitted classes before '99 and also don't include Sponsor Parents or
Academy Staff/Faculty in the Class Numbers since these members transcend
Classes. The "List Numbers" are accurate, counting each and every member of
each list as of 0330 each day.

So as of this evening, we number 2,934 families on our USNA-Net Master list.
To see the rest of the numbers, we invite you to visit the web site and
click on the new links. Remember if you don't see them , you'll need to
REFRESH your browser by holding down the Shift Key while you click "Refresh"
or "Reload" in your Browser's main menu at the top of the Browser's window.

Watch us over the next six months as our numbers swell with the influx of
all the new '08 parents.

A special message from your Moderators...

Just a short note about Fund Raising...

It was noticed that WP.Org (the West-Point Alumni Organization) is again
raising money for the support of their group. This is their 15th
Semi-Annual Fundraiser and this time they are asking for $108,900 for the
next six months. Last time it was $98,400 for six months or over $200,000
annually.

PLEASE NOTE...

WP.Org and the over 300 Army mailing lists it supports, are NOT part of
USNA-Net !!!

We do not receive any of the money they raise for the use of West Point
Alumni and Parents.

We run USNA-Net's Annual Fund Raiser beginning on September 1st each year
and raise our entire ANNUAL budget of about $6,000 in just six days thanks
to our many generous members. As we promised, we will NOT be asking for
funding for our lists again until next September.

All of USNA-Net's web sites and mailing lists... USNA-Net, USNA-Family,
USNA-Plebe, USNA-Prayer, USNA-Info and USNA-Weather are totally supported
and funded through that ONE Annual Fund Raiser and we are NOT asking for
money at this time.

By sending out this little reminder, we hope to avoid confusion for those
members who may have heard about the WP-Org fund drive and were wondering.
This is WP.Org's Semi-Annual effort by West Point Alumni to raise money for
the support of their 28,000+ West Point Alumni and Parent members.

Please know that USNA-Net is fully funded for the coming year and does not
need any additional monies. Thank you all again for your generous support
and many, many donations last September. If you missed your opportunity to
donate at that time, we ask that you wait until next September when we will
again be raising funds for next year.

We are proud to be totally self-supporting and the ONLY Naval Academy Web
Site and Support Group funded entirely by Parents of Midshipmen and
Sponsors.

Thanks again,
