A special message from your Moderators...

Just a few quick notes about posting messages to our lists...

While everyone has been really great about keeping Plebe issues on the
USNA-Plebe list (Thank you , Thank you!) I wanted to remind our members
about a few things that will make administering these lists easier on your
Moderators.

Please do NOT quote the Entire Original Email in your responses...
==================================================
In order to cut down on duplication in our archives which makes
searching them more difficult, our server stopped accepting messages which
quote the original message in the response last February. It may seem like
a petty detail but when we're dealing with dozens of messages daily and they
sometimes contain copies of copies of copies, there is dome awesome message
bloat. Just set your email program preferences to not include the original
in your responses to our lists or delete the quoted original before you hit
the send key. If you need to remind the reader of the original question,
include just a small snippet of the original instead of the entire message.

Don't send questions intended for the group to my personal email address...
========================================================
I'm constantly flattered that so many of you write directly to me with
your questions at mzets@USNA-Net.org but doing that creates tons of extra
work for your already overloaded Moderators. Please make sure that you
address your "group" questions to the appropriate list address at...

USNA-Family@USNA-Net.org for General Brigade related issues.
USNA-Plebe@USNA-Net.org for all Plebe related issues.
USNA-Prayer@USNA-Net.org for all Religious issues and prayer requests.

My private email address at mzets@USNA-Net.org SHOULD be used if you want to
post a message anonymously or if you have administrative matters like list
subscription requests, changes of address, requests for passwords, etc. to
discuss.

We're growing by leaps and bounds...
=============================
As of this morning, our entire membership numbered 3,286 USNA Families with
487 new '08 members. For the first time '08 parents outnumber '04 parents
who have shrunken to 475 since Commissioning. Welcome aboard for the new
parents, farewell to those members of the Class of '04 who are electing to
move on. Of course you're all welcome to stay as long as you want.

Please remember that this is our busiest time of year at USNA-Net for
administrative items like adding/dropping membership in lists, changes of
address, new subscriptions. Plus message traffic volume overall is up as
Plebe Summer approaches. Please be patient, use the delete key with abandon
and things will eventually settle down to a more normal pace. :>) Whatever
that is. If you seem to be having a problem with your service, give your
question or request a couple of days to take effect. If we still haven't
made the requested change, ask us again. We can't be at the computer 24/7.

Vacation Suspensions...
======================
If you wish to have your email from USNA-Net suspended for vacation or an
extended period, send a private email to me at mzets@USNA-Net.org ON THE DAY
YOU WANT MAIL TO STOP. Tell us how long the suspension is for. Then, when
you get back or want the mail to resume, SEND US ANOTHER EMAIL TELLING US TO
REINSTATE YOUR MEMBERSHIP.

We cannot stop mail for less than two weeks and we just can't keep track of
notices which come in advance. There are simply too many of you to be
private secretaries for, booking your suspension a week in advance and
remembering to restart service in another three weeks. We'll gladly do the
Vacation suspension but you have to tell us on the day of suspension and
with a separate email again when you want service to resume. Thanks sooooo
much.

The above items will help with more than half of our administrative problems
on this end for the moment.

Please make sure that YOU recruit an '08 parent between now and I-Day...
========================================================
You are a member of USNA-Net because someone encouraged you to join.
You know the value of USNA-Net membership. Please don't let other parents
go through this summer without the benefit of membership. Find new parents
in your local area, contact your local parents club and go to their summer
meeting, encourage everyone you meet to visit our web site at www.USNA.org.
You know they won't be sorry. It's free. It works.

Imagine your life without USNA-Net. Don't let any other parent suffer
without our help as they drop off their son or daughter on I-Day. It's just
26 days and a wake up away. We need to find the rest of the '08 parents
soon. We're running out of time to really be of help.

Do your have your copy of the new Brief Points - 3rd Edition?
==============================================
Ross Mackenzie's newest publication is shipping from the publisher as of
last month. USNA-Net is referenced in several locations within the book and
Sandi and I are actually acknowledged as contributors in the
Acknowledgements. Our Thanks to Ross for allowing us to participate. We
hope that our input made a difference and solidly improved this latest (and
greatest) revision to the all time CLASSIC reference book for parents of
Midshipman.

If you don't have the latest copy, you can order it from the main page of
our web site at www.USNA.org. Just look for the "Must Read Books" graphic
on the far right of the home page. New, updated content and a glossary of
"Midspeak" that is the best in the world. Finally a book that explains in
today's "parental" English what all that "slang' is actually saying. The
book is worth buying just for that. Get it now and be prepared for I-Day.

Cell Phone Volunteers needed again this year...
=====================================
Again this year, USNA-Net and several other groups including several
Christian Fellowship organizations in conjunction with the Chaplain's Office
will be assisting UNACCOMPANIED Mids on I-Day. YOUR CELL PHONE is needed
following the swearing in ceremony at the Mexican Monument (the four canons
in the middle of Stribling Walk) where we will allow any unaccompanied Plebe
to use our cell phones to dial home and talk to mom and dad during that
twenty minutes after the ceremony when all the other Plebes will be meeting
with parents for the last time.

Drop me a note (mzets@USNA-Net.org) to let us know if you can join us on the
Yard on I-Day, 30 JUN 04 at 1800 with your cell phone(s). Bring more than
one if you can. We had over 50 parent volunteers last year and helped maybe
100 or so unaccompanied Plebes to phone home following the swearing in
ceremony. We have pics of the callers from the last several years in our
photo gallery on the web site. Imagine how much it meant for those plebe
parents in years past to hear from their Plebe for those 20 minutes when
they couldn't be with them in person.

Won't you please help us if you'll be in the area? And if our '08 parents
who will be there with their own kids can lend us a spare phone for a half
hour, we'll be certain to return it following the event. We don't need your
body, we just need your phone. I'll be writing more as I-Day approaches.

Best of luck to all the '04 parents as they depart and Welcome Aboard to all
our new members. You've just joined the biggest and best "Family" you'll
ever find.

Go Navy...

A special message from your Moderators...

This morning when I checked the web site, I noticed that for the first time
this year, our Stats showed that we now have 501 Families enrolled from the
Class of '08. That's wonderful news so early in the summer. We're well on
track to having the Class of '08 be the largest class of Parents in our six
year history.

We wanted to thank everyone out there who has helped find and recruit all of
these new members so early in the cycle. After all, the sooner we find
these parents the better (and easier) it is for the entire family. The more
that these parents and Plebes know BEFORE I-Day, the easier the transition
will be into Plebe Summer and beyond. Think how much more you know today
than you did 24 days before YOUR I-Day. For those of you in earlier
classes who didn't find us until after your I-Day, imagine how much better
off all these '08 Families will be for having access to our resources before
they make that next big step.

As June zips past us, many of you will be attending meetings or picnics over
the next few weekends held by your local clubs to introduce yourselves with
the new '08 parents in your area. We've made it easy to share information
about USNA-Net with them at these meetings.

First, just remember our web address... www.USNA.ORG That's right. DOT
ORG!

Next, about five years ago, we decided that all of our members should carry
a few of our USNA-Net Business Cards around to pass out whenever they had an
opportunity to talk about our group. The Cards are in Word Format on our
main page. Just scroll down to the bottom of the home page and click on the
link in the middle of the page that says "USNA-Net Business Cards." Print
out a few and pass them along to all the new members at your next Parents
Club Meeting.

What's that you say? You're not a member of your local Parents Club? Shame
on you. June is "JOIN YOUR LOCAL PARENTS CLUB MONTH" on USNA-Net. Find
your local group and attend the summer picnic meeting. It's loads of fun
and the amount of information you will find there is astounding. Not only
that, but where else will you find someone who truly understands your
compulsion to wear all that USNA logo clothing???? Or who won't roll their
eyes in confusion or anguish when you start talking again about PRT or YPs
or your Mid's Herndon??? What's a herndon? Did it require surgery?

Your local club speaks "Navy" as a FIRST language. Make sure you find them
soon.

To locate the nearest club, visit our web site at www.USNA.org and click on
Parents Club Web Sites in the main menu on the left of the home page. There
is a map showing all the clubs with web sites PLUS a link to EVERY local
club president at the bottom of that page. It sometimes takes the Academy a
while to update the names and contact information as it all changes every
year but the past presidents will always be happy to point you in the right
direction.

So, to the 501 NEW members of USNA-Net from the Class of '08, WELCOME
ABOARD! And to the other 2,779 members of the upper-classes and grads, do
your part. Help us to help other parents by finding the rest of the Parents
of the Class of '08 and getting them to join soon. I'd be willing to bet
that we will have over 800 '08 Families signed up if we all tried just a bit
harder this year. The Class of '07 peaked at 751 Families last year as our
largest single class ever. And the '08 class is on track to bury that
record early.

To view all these stats, just click on the two links just above the Hit
Counter on the bottom left of the home page at www.USNA.org. They're
automatically updated every day.

Thanks for your time and enjoy your weekends.

Go Navy

We CAN suspend a membership while you are on vacation as long as the time
frame is 14 days or longer.

Simply send an email TO THE MODERATORS (not the entire list) at
Moderator@USNA-Net.org requesting the suspension.

We can't track this stuff in advance for over 3,300 member families, so
please send the request ON THE DAY you wish the suspension to begin and send
us another email when you return asking for your account to be reinstated.
DO NOT RESUBSCRIBE. It causes more work for us on this end.

Requests for suspensions of less than 14 days may not be honored. The
suspension is a STOP ALL MAIL. We will not HOLD AND DELIVER LATER like the
post office. (All back email for all lists is copied in our Archives for
when you return.)

Thanks so much to all for your cooperation.

A special message from your Moderators...

Several years ago, a few members of the SouthEast PA USNA Parents' Club
showed up on I-Day to meet PA mids whose parents had not accompanied them to
I-Day, to supply a cell phone so they could call home after the Induction
Ceremony and talk to a familiar voice. At USNA-net, we thought this was a
wonderful idea - and figured that, with the help of our members, it might be
possible to do the same for ALL of the unaccompanied plebes on I-Day. It
worked like a dream. Last year, we had over 60 parents with 60+ cell phones
waiting at the Mexican Monument to give those plebes who had arrived for
plebe summer alone a chance to call home. I will always remember the first
plebe who used my phone last year - as he finished his call with his
mother - the tears welling up in his eyes. I gave him a hug and told him
that everything would be fine - he straightened his shoulders and said to
me, "Yes, ma'am, I'm fine now." And you know what? I'm sure he was!

This year, the Chaplain's Office is spearheading the drive to provide cell
phones on I-Day for those unaccompanied plebes. Following is a letter sent
out this morning:

Sent: Tuesday, June 08, 2004 12:32 PM
Subject: Calling All NAPC Volunteers! Cell Phones at the Mexican Monument

Dear Parent Club Presidents, Editors and Webmasters:

The USNA Chaplain's Office and the Naval Academy Alumni Association are
soliciting the help of local parent club volunteers for Induction Day,
Wednesday, June 30, 2004. After the Swearing-In Ceremony at 1800 many
Plebes who are unaccompanied by family members on I-Day will call home on
cell phones to connect with their parents during this very special time. A
designated area will be set up for them by the Mexican Monument to make
these calls.

In order to have enough cell phones on hand, we are asking local parent club
members to be there to share their phones with the Plebes. We are asking
only upper-class parents to volunteer, since Plebe parents will be spending
time with their own sons and daughters after the Swearing-In.

Presidents, please provide a list of names via email to me of those who will
be participating from your NAPC by Monday, June 21 so that we can have name
tags ready for your volunteers upon their arrival at the Mexican Monument on
June 30. We will need the following information:

Name of volunteer:___________________________________________
USNA parent club: ____________________________________________
Phone number: ____________________________________________

If you can be there to help with your cell phone in hand, you can either
supply your information directly to your Parents' Club President - or to me.
I will also pass along your info to the proper place so that you will have a
name tag waiting for you.

Mike and I were thrilled with the outpouring of help last year and know that
the Chaplain's Office will do a bang-up job to help the plebes. As we were
for the past three years, we will again be at the Mexican Monument to
provide our cell phones to any plebe who wants to call home on I-Day.

Remember, the invitation to help is intended only to upper-class parents -
so that all of you 2008 parents can enjoy those last few precious moments
with your plebe. So, upper-class parents, if YOU can be there please let us
know!

A special message from your Moderators...

Unfortunately, there has been some confusion on the part of a few members
about HOW TO POST an anonymous message to our lists. Please read this so
that when YOU need to ask a question anonymously, you will be able to do so
with confidence...

ALL messages sent to our LIST ADDRESSES go DIRECTLY to the lists.

Sandi and I can't possibly read, approve and forward all of the message
traffic that goes to our lists during the course of a day. It would mean
that we would have to be chained to the computers 24/7 or there would be
long delays in transmission while we were away at work or sleeping on the
East Coast while members on the West Coast tried to send messages, etc.

So ALL of our USNA-Net lists operate as "Unmoderated" lists meaning that a
message which is sent to any of our lists is relayed immediately (WITHOUT
HUMAN INTERVENTION) to the list members as long as it passes through our
automated filters which verify a member's subscription and check for Taboo
topics like base security, terrorism and such.

These "Direct Delivery" email addresses are...

USNA-Family@USNA-Net.org for general topics of interest to our entire
membership,
USNA-Plebe@USNA-Net.org for ALL Plebe related messages, and
USNA-Prayer@USNA-Net.org for all religious messages and prayer requests.

Messages sent to these lists are NOT screened by the Moderators before they
are posted.

Once a message is sent to one of the above addresses, there is nothing that
can be done to stop it from being relayed to the list - not even if you
contact us immediately and tell us you sent it to the wrong address by
accident. Once you hit the send button, it is on its way.

IF YOU WISH TO POST A MESSAGE ANONYMOUSLY YOU MUST ADDRESS IT TO...

Moderator@USNA-Net.org

or send it to either mzets@USNA-Net.org or jsandi@USNA-Net.org which are
either my or Sandi's PRIVATE email address. We will then be able to strip
your message of your identifying information and send it along to the
appropriate list from our own email address.

If you wish to respond anonymously to a message you must also send it to
Moderator@USNA-Net.org or to our PRIVATE email addresses so that we can
process it in the same way.

We deeply regret the recent post in which the sender mistakenly sent a
message to the list, thinking we could intercept it and anonymize it. But
there was nothing we could do to undo the process once it had been sent.

Please be careful when addressing mail to our members. Remember too, that
all of this is explained in detail in our Frequently Asked Questions on our
web site at www.USNA.org.

It should be a MUST READ for all of our members BEFORE they post messages to
our lists.

It might be a good idea to print out this message and keep it near your
keyboard for future reference.

A special message from your Moderators...

We are always adding ads to the Classified Ads on our web site at
www.USNA.org. Every once in a while we get an ad that we just have to make
a bit of a fuss over and make sure that all of our members know about it.

Of course, as a good USNA-Net member, you regularly scan the Classifieds for
new ads - like for Rental Properties, cars for sale, jewelry, computers...
all sorts of things. But if I let you miss this one, you'd be more than a
little bit angry with your Moderators for not letting you know about it.

The Arizona Parents Club is offering Officially Licensed USNA
Blankets/Throws for sale at a "knock you back in your seat" price. Two
styles are available. One with USNA with the Academy Crest and the other is
a gorgeous CLASS of '05 CLASS CREST THROW. Neither is available anywhere
else.

You have to see these Throws to understand just how magnificent they are.

Just visit our web site at www.USNA.org and click on the Classifieds. You
can't miss them. They're right at the top of the Classified.

While you're there, check out the other ads for all sorts of stuff. Be sure
to tell the merchants you place an order with that you saw their ad in our
USNA-Net Classifieds. Ads may ONLY be placed by members, so when you order
from these merchants, you are ordering from one of our own. Remember that
VIEWING our Classifieds can be done by anyone (not just members), so tell
all your friend and relatives about these blankets and let them have a look,
too.

Good luck to the Arizona Parents Club on this fund raiser.

We hope you SELL OUT in the first couple of days.

Go Navy...

Dear Parent's Club Leaders
My name is Tom Thompson (USNA '73 & retired submariner). I am the staff
coordinator for the Officer's Christian Fellowship ministry at USNA. OCF is
an authorized extracurricular activity for midshipmen at USNA, and a
fellowship of Christian officers in the fleet.

Officers' Christian Fellowship will host a welcome gathering and ice cream
social for the Class of 2008 the day before Induction day (29 June) at 7PM.
Location: The OCF fellowship house, Maranatha Mansion (21 Maryland Ave. - 1
1/2 blocks outside of USNA gate #3 - look for the OCF banner). This is a
unique opportunity for these new Mids (and their parents) to meet fellow
Christian classmates before plebe summer starts. This spiritual connection
often creates bonds of fellowship that provide great encouragement through
the summer, and for years to come. Several of our OCF midshipmen will be
present as well as some of the officers that are part of the OCF ministry
team. We will also have an Open House from 10AM-4PM that same day so that
'08s and their families can drop in to ask questions and find out more about
OCF at USNA.

If you know any members of the new class that might be interested in OCF
please let them know about these opportunities. Feel free to pass on my
e-mail and phone number (410 268-9288) so that they can contact me
directly. You can get more information about USNA-OCF on our website:
http://www.usna.edu/OCF.

========================================================

Dear Plebe Parents:

Every year the Annapolis Baptist Student Union (an approved Academy
Extracurriculur Organization) offers the following help for plebes and
their parents:

1. "Come and GO" BarBQ for incoming '08 and family members June 29th
5:30-7:00 at the BSU Center located just outside of Gate 3 at 201 Hanover
Street (below the chapel)

2. Free Care Packages during Plebe Summer. BSU offers free care packages
for plebes. Any parents, family or friends interested in having their son
or daughter receive some additonal "care" during Plebe Summer can request
this through the BSU. All that is needed is the full name of your son or
daughter, his/her PO Box and if possible Company and Platoon information.

For more info email Kirk Ritchey at director@annapolisbsu.org
or call 410 263-0963.

========================================================

The evening before I-Day, at least three of the USNA Christian Extra
Curricular Activities (ECA) will host get-togethers designed to introduce
themselves to the new plebes and their parents. There has already been an
announcement for Officer's Christian Fellowship (OCF) and the Baptist
Student Union (BSU) usually holds one as well. You are encouraged to attend
one or more of these events, just to make contact. Other ECAs include
Navigators and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and there are active
Protestant and Catholic Midshipman clubs sponsored by the Chaplains.

Campus Crusade for Christ will host its annual "Patio Party" again this
year. The get-to-together will be an informal affair with the major purpose
of letting the parents and new plebes know what is going on at USNA
spiritually, especially through Campus Crusade for Christ.

WHEN: It will be held on June 29, 2004 (the evening before '08 I-Day) from
1600 to 1800 -- that's 4:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. civilian time. (Note to Plebe
parents: USNA runs on military time. You should get used to hearing it and
start to use it yourself when you relate information to your mid.)

WHERE: The event will be held at the Vanderhorst home, 18 East Street.

DIRECTIONS: As you exit the Yard through Gate 1, if you went straight
ahead, you would be heading NW on King George Street. If instead, you made
a left, you would be heading SW on Randall Street. There is a third street
that enters that intersection at a 45 degree angle between King George
Street and Randall Street. That is East Street.

>From Gate 1, proceed west on East Street. Number 18 is the second house on
the right. The house is painted yellow with grey trim. There will be a
Campus Crusade for Christ sign and some ballons in front. Go through the
gate to the back yard patio.

Your CCC host and hostess will be John Paul and Billie Berry. All new
Plebes-to-be and their families are welcome!

PLEASE - If you believe that you will try to attend the reception, please
send John Paul and Billie Berry (not the list) a return email indicating how
many will be in your group. Their e-mail is jpberrysr@comcast.net. That
way, we can begin to get a count. Thanks. You can also call John Paul
Berry or his wife, Billie, at 410 216-6040 for additional information.

Sir:
As per your conversation w/ VADM Rempt Sunday in Detroit, the following is
the official policy governing 4/C use of cell phones.

Midshipmen are permitted and encouraged to bring their cellular phones with
them on Indoctrination Day (I-Day). During the initial 7 weeks of plebe
summer, midshipmen will not be permitted to keep their phones in their rooms
but they will be kept secured in storage. The phones will be distributed
for use during those times designated for placing phone calls. Once the
academic year begins, the cell phones will be redistributed and may be kept
in the permanent possession of the 4/C.

A special message from your Moderators...

Just a short note to remind all of you that Sandi and I will be attending
I-Day in Annapolis. You can find us at the Alumni Ass'n Welcome Picnic
between 1030 and 1245 on Hospital Point at the NE Ohio Parents Club Table
under the big tent.

Since we will be operating from the trusty laptop, we will not be able to
get to some of the more routine administrative things like changes of
address and add/drop on subscriptions until we return on Thursday afternoon.
We appreciate your patience and ask that you hold off on those sorts of
things until the end of the week.

We'll try to keep things caught up but it's not as easily done when we're
"on the road."

Also, PLEASE hold off on sending photos to Sandi until at least late
Thursday morning. Getting them downloaded while using temporary dial up
connections can be a problem. We definitely want to get all the digital
pics for the Photo Gallery as soon as possible so that you can start playing
"Where's Waldo" looking for your Plebe but please hold off until late
Thursday morning at the earliest.

Thanks for you cooperation...
