A special message from your Moderators...

In an effort to be responsive to the needs of our members, USNA-Net will be
offering a new "specialty" list to our members.

SWORD@USNA-Net.org

Single, Widowed Or Remarried / Divorced Parents

It is a fact of life, in today's society, that many of our members are faced
with coping with the unique circumstances of ex-spouses and/or blended
families during their four years as parents of Midshipmen. While many of
these situations are stable, even cordial... many others are not. Friction
between former spouses can play a big part in family plans surrounding
common events such as PPW, FPW, Ring Dance, Yard visits, Holiday/Summer
Leaves and Commissioning Week.

We have initiated this new list to help our members who find themselves in
this situation to seek Advice and Support from other parents who have "been
there - done that" in the past.

Participation in the new list (which will operate like the Plebe list but
confine discussions to SWORD topics only) is limited to those members who
obviously qualify by virtue of their current marital status. We request
that if you are NOT a Single, Widow/Widower, Divorced parent, that you not
ask to be subscribed to this new list.

As many of you already know, Sandi and I are both divorced and remarried.
Sandi's son Michael is OUR USNA Grad (Class of '00). We know of many other
members who are in this same situation and we simply felt that there was a
need to be able to seek advice away from the main stream membership. This
is our way of offering even more support as we did when we instituted the
Prayer list for those who feel the need to express their spirituality while
not imposing it upon our religiously diverse general membership.

The new list will go into operation in a few days. If you wish to be
included in this list, all you have to do is drop an email to
subscribe@usna-net.org and request that you be added to the SWORD list.
When the list is launched in a few days, you will get an announcement along
with the operating parameters for using the new list.

We hope that our members will find this new list helpful and the members who
join to be caring and sympathetic to the special needs of this special
portion of our Navy Family.

Also, be assured that your participation in this list will be kept totally
confidential at all times. No one will know you have joined unless you wish
to reveal your presence. So if you need help with SWORD related issues or
have experience as a divorced parent and wish to share it with others in
need of counseling, please join our new list today.

Go Navy...

A special message from your Moderators...

A number of our members are concerned about FONA Passes. We received the
following information today...

=========================================
The USNA Director of Security reports the following procedure for renewal of
FONAs for parents this year... An email was sent from USNA Security
yesterday to all Company Officers requesting renewals of FONA passes whereby
Company Officers alert their group.

Mids are responsible for providing FONA pass information to their Company
Officers and then this info is sent back via spreadsheet to Security. FONA
passes are prepared and given back to Bancroft Hall and each Mid is
responsible for mailing the FONA to their parents. Official gate expiration
on FONA passes is AUGUST 31, 2004 but an extension has been allowed until
SEPT. 30, 2004.
==========================================

If you have a pass that needs renewing, contact your Mid. If you have
already sent your renewal in, don't worry about it. One way or the other,
it seems that the Academy is on top of things.

A special message from your Moderators...

Dear Fellow Parents...

Can it be another year already? It was the first of September of last year
when USNA-Net last asked for your assistance. We've grown a lot in that
time...

- Our total membership is up 400 Families and is now over 3,400 including
781 new families in the Class of '08.

- Our Website had 315,500 visitors in the past 12 months, recording our
1,000,000th visitor on July 14th. The website has had another 70,000
visitors since then.

- Our Archives have swollen to over 17 Million words of valuable Advice
and Support making it the largest repository of USNA Parental Advice
anywhere.

- We've added the SWORD list for Single, Widowed Or Remarried / Divorced
Parents so that we can help them in their special circumstances.

- We've added thousands of photographs to our Photo Gallery - more this
Plebe Summer than ever before in our history.

- There are new Wallpapers, Postcards and Screensavers for our members to
use.

- Our www.USNA-Net.org Website has grown to over 680 pages of
information.

- We now host 38 Local Parents Club Websites on our server with their own
domain names at no costs to the clubs. This is up from 26 at this time last
year.

- We continue our Safe Harbor Program, now with over 1,150 volunteer
families registered to render assistance any hour of the day or night to
Mids on three continents. Thank you to the dozens of families who answered
the call in the past 12 months when our Mids needed you.

- And Plebe Summer 2004 (with its 2,150 individual Plebe list messages
shared between Herndon and Reform) is finally just a memory. In just that
short time this summer, our server delivered over 6.5 Million individual
email messages to our members.

It's been a wonderfully fulfilling year, indeed.

We were able to do all of this because of your generosity. Last year when
we asked for your support, your response was overwhelming and in just a week
last September, we reached our Fund Raising goal. While every hour of time
provided by all of those who volunteer to operate USNA-Net, either directly
or indirectly, is donated without compensation, we still incur real
operating expenses for our server and its connection to the Internet, so we
will need your help again this year to help us defray our expenses and keep
USNA-Net on the Internet and fulfilling its Mission of "Parents Helping
Parents."

For those of you who have contributed in the past, we are asking that you do
it again - only once, this fall, for the next 12 months. For those of our
members who are new to USNA-Net, especially those members of the Class of
'08 who were helped so much during Plebe Summer, we ask that you take a
moment to send in whatever you can afford.

So many of you have written to express your thanks for all that our lists
have meant to you as you left your Plebes on I-Day and had to endure the
rigors of separation with your friends on USNA-Net to help you get through
the summer. This is now your opportunity to say Thank You to the entire
group with a donation to help keep us going for another year.

Rest assured, we totally understand the restraints on family budgets. It's
tough sometimes to come up with a few extra dollars. If you can't send
something now, we understand. BUT... We really do need our members'
support.

We like to think of ourselves as the Internet equivalent of Public
Television. If you send in your donation, you get to watch PBS. If you
don't, you still get to watch all of the same programs but you just don't
get to feel quite as good about it. And "our" PBS station will only ask for
donations ONCE a year. :>)

You can find all of the details about how to donate on our website's main
page by clicking on the blue DONATE button in the middle of the page.

On-line donations (via our secure server) may be made using your Visa or
Mastercard with total security and absolute privacy. If you prefer, there
is also an address there to which you may mail a check.

So on behalf of all of the members of USNA-Net and our Board of Advisors...
Thanks so much for your continued support..
