A special message from your Moderators...

Recently there have been a series of email messages circulating on the
Internet which LOOK very official claiming to be from Citibank, SunTrust
Bank, Smith Barney and others. They even contain the company logos of your
bank or investment firm. These emails are HOAXES !!!

Each of these messages ask that you visit the company's web site to verify
your banking and customer information and give you a link to use.

DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK. Do not respond to these messages in any way.
They are HOAXES perpetrated by identity thieves looking for information
about your financial accounts.

None of these institutions will ever contact you in this manner to verify
information. If you have been duped by one of these messages, you should
contact the institution and your local police department or the local FBI
field office in your area and notify them of the possibility that you have
supplied information to a possible identity thief and ask for their
assistance in helping you to minimize damage to your assets and credit
ratings.

This is a very serious threat to all of us and you needed to be aware of
these fraudulent emails.

Again, DO NOT CLICK on the links supplied with these messages. Delete them
from your computer without delay. If you have responded, save the messages
for the authorities. They will need them to investigate your situation.

Be Safe. Be smart.

A special message from your Moderators...

Just a short note about Fund Raising...

It was noticed that WP-Org (the West-Point Alumni Organization) is again
raising money for the support of their group. This is their 16th
Semi-Annual Fundraiser and this time they are asking for $113,077 for the
next six months. Last time it was $108,900 for six months or over $221,000
annually.

PLEASE NOTE...

WP.Org and the over 300 Army mailing lists it supports, are NOT part of
USNA-Net !!!

We do NOT receive any of the money they raise for West Point Alumni and
Parents.

We run USNA-Net's Annual Fund Raiser in September of each year and raise our
entire ANNUAL budget of about $8,600 in about a week thanks to our many
generous members. As we promised, we will NOT be asking for funding for our
lists again until next September.

All of USNA-Net's web sites and mailing lists... USNA-Net, USNA-Family,
USNA-Plebe, USNA-Prayer, USNA-Info, USNA-Weather and SWORD are totally
supported and funded through that ONE Annual Fund Raiser and we are NOT
asking for money at this time.

By sending out this little reminder, we hope to avoid confusion for those
members who may have heard about the WP-Org fund drive and were wondering.
This is WP.Org's Semi-Annual effort by West Point Alumni to raise money for
the support of their 28,000+ West Point Alumni and Parent members.

Please know that USNA-Net is fully funded for the coming year and does not
need any additional monies. Thank you all again for your generous support
and many, many donations last September. If you missed your opportunity to
donate at that time, we ask that you wait until next September when we will
again be raising funds for next year.

We are proud to be totally self-supporting and the ONLY Naval Academy Web
Site and Support Group funded entirely by Parents of Midshipmen and
Sponsors.

Thanks again,

A special message from your Moderators...

Well, it happened again this morning. Just after 0800 EDT, my inbox jumped
to life with more incoming messages and just as it has for weeks, maybe
months, I received my morning dose of virus laden email from one of you.
Every day, you turn on your computer and it begins firing off copies of its
infection to everyone in your address book. It sent itself to EVERYONE in
your address book including our Family, Plebe and Prayer lists.

It's a smart little virus that FORGES the return address on these emails so
we can't tell where they are coming from. And of course, our server is
smart enough to not publish them but they come, none the less. And quite
frankly, it's getting a bit tedious. I get a copy of everything that the
server rejects. So, I get all of your little virus's transmissions that are
addressed either to our service or me, personally.

Now, mind you... I wouldn't normally be upset that your virus infection
loves me so much that it feels it must say Good Morning to me everyday but
it's been weeks and the stupid computer is still doing it's thing. EVERY
DAY!

And it wouldn't be so bad if it was just YOUR computer. But as far as I can
figure out, it's about 6 of you that are infected as we speak. At least one
of you is on a broadband (DSL or Cable) connection that runs all day at very
high speed. A few others are on slower, dial up connections and send out
your copies of the infection at all hours of the day and evening. I even
get a few after I've gone to bed here on the East Coast while it is still
playing "Whose computer can I mess up tonight?" well after 9:00 PM Pacific
time. (Midnight Eastern).

PLEASE... Stop with the "head in the sand" attitude and the "It can't be
me!" bull. It is you! You (or someone else who uses your computer) opened
an infected email attachment and got infected. All it takes is once. Maybe
it was one of your kids or a grandchild or your spouse but someone did it
and you're computer has been spewing out infected emails ever since. Not
just one or two, but thousands per hour for as long as it's turned on, every
time it's turned on, for weeks.

It's not like it costs you anything to fix the problem. You can get free
AntiVirus software (that never costs anything to update) at...

    http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

We've had this link in our Site Index for over two years. Just visit the
above site and scroll down to the bottom of the page and download the free
version. You don't need the paid Professional version for your home
computer. It's free for personal, non-business use. It will find and
remove your infections for you and keep you safe from future infections as
well.

What more do you want? Or is it that you enjoy causing hundreds of your
friends to silently curse you every time you turn on your computer?
Personally, if I knew who you were... Well, let's just say that stakes,
ropes, desert sand dunes, a jar of honey and a million sand fleas comes to
mind. Oh yeah. Don't forget... the hot sun baking you to a mild "well
done" while were at it.

All kidding aside. We have at least 6 members (out of 3,400) who are
currently infected with one or more computer viruses and it's only a matter
of time before the virus fills your hard drive, corrupts your system and
costs you hundreds of dollars in replacement costs for a new machine. And
let's not forget that when it kills your computer, it will kill all the data
you have in it right now. All those personal messages, addresses, photos...
EVERYTHING will be lost forever.

Do something about it today. I don't want to have to use my jar of honey on
you. I was hoping to use that on someone really worthy, like... Oh.
This is a public forum and I really shouldn't say that out loud. :>)

Fix your problem. PLEASE???

A special message from your Moderators...

Well folks, it was a great idea! It had the best of intentions! But it
looks as though it has come to an end.

NO MORE THROWING CANDY TO THE MIDS AS THEY MARCH TO THE STADIUM !

While it is only an "Official Request" from the Annapolis Mayor, I suspect
that it may become a ticketable misdemeanor if simply asking us to stop
isn't enough. Don't say we didn't warn our members.

I have been at all of the home games and lately, the mess left behind the
March Over is really MUCH more of a problem than the following article
describes. I've personally seen what looks like thousands of individual
pieces of candy and their paper/foil wrappers flattened along the parade
route for blocks leading up to the stadium.

Candy which is not caught by the Mids is subsequently ground into the
pavement all along the parade route by Mids marching in lock step and the
vehicles which drive on the roads afterwards and has to be scraped off the
streets, ONE PIECE AT A TIME. It is a real waste of treats and could easily
become a health hazard with birds and other "vermin" out there looking to
chow down on the fresh "Road Kill." Not to mention the wasted time and
tax-payer dollars needed for the clean up.

Let's all do our part and save the treats for later... to pass out to Mids
in person at Company tailgates or to squadmates/companymates during or
following the game. It's not that we want to stop giving treats to the
Mids. It's that we have to find a better, less wasteful, way to give it to
them.

Below is the original article published in the Capital Newspaper and sent to
us by Navy Sports Information.

Let's all be good Annapolis neighbors and stop contributing to the litter
problem at the Football Games.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Throwing candy at mids too much sticky business

Who knew you could put out a mid's eye with a piece of candy?

That's the worry of Mayor Ellen O. Moyer, who yesterday asked people to stop
the tradition of tossing treats at the Brigade of Midshipmen as it marches
to football games.

"We would appreciate having alternative expressions of appreciation -
cheering comes to mind," said spokesman Jan Hardesty. Ms. Moyer, a fan of
the Midshipmen, worries someone's "Blue Angel aspiration" is going to end
"with a Tootsie Roll across the cornea," Ms. Hardesty said.

Also, there's the gooey mess left behind.

"The mids have pretty good reflexes, but they can't catch it all and you
wouldn't believe what those Hershey Kisses look like after a few thousand
feet have stomped them into Taylor Avenue," according to Ms. Hardesty.
Today's march to Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium for the game against
Rice University will go down Route 450 and Taylor Avenue and across Rowe
Boulevard, which are state roads. But regardless of who's responsible for
cleaning up the mess, it remains a concern.

Cmdr. Rod Gibbons, an academy spokesman, said the Brigade of Midshipmen
"appreciates the wonderful spirit and generous support of our community,"
but agreed tossing candy "creates safety concerns for our midshipmen and a
litter problem for the city."

He said some mids would carry garbage bags today and police the streets
behind the brigade.
