A special message from your Moderators...

We've been busy. There are three new sets of photos on the web site.

Our thanks to David and Audrey Peartree (Kevin '08) for their photos of the
Navy Sailing Team's meet at Seneca Lake, NY last weekend.

And to Dale and Marilyn Dorn (Ryan '07) for more pics of the Men's Glee Club
in London and Rome last month.

And to Kathy Barlow (Brian '05) for more pics of Men's Crew at Lake
Carnegie.

You'll find them all on our www.USNA.org web site. They are the lead
article on the main page and also may be found in the Photo Gallery.

Be sure to check out the article on our main page and then take a moment to
look at the pics. Some of them are really spectacular.

If you haven't looked through the Photo Gallery lately, there's a lot to
see. If you have dial up (aka a slow connection) you might want to go to
the local library and use one of their computers to view the pics over a
high speed broadband connection. Cable is 60 times faster than the fastest
dial up. What takes five minutes on dial up takes five seconds on cable.
It really is THAT fast.

Don't forget that we still have pics from the '05 Plebe Summer in the Photo
Gallery. So if you're looking to finish out those scrapbooks, those pics
will be right up your alley. And for all our new '09 members, it's a
glimpse of what's to come on I-Day and through Plebe Summer. I-Day 2002 is
a narrated walking tour of every step of the way through Alumni Hall on
Induction Day. Feel free to share all of these pics with your friends,
relatives AND your Mids (or Plebes-to-be).

Enjoy...

A special message from your Moderators...

As incredible as it seems, we logged our 1,250,000th visitor to www.USNA.org
today over the noon hour (EDT). It was only six years and a month ago
(3/9/99) that I put that counter on the fledgling web site and watched as
each digit rolled over, one at a time for the first few weeks. It was at
this time (Mar '99) that our organization had only 70 members.

Back then, we'd get between ten and fifty visitors to the web site in a
day's time. But it began to grow. At the end of six months on 9/9/99, the
counter showed 24,022 visitors or an average of 3,000 visitors a month
(about 100 per day). Not bad for a new web site.

(Just so you understand, we cull our visitor figures from our logs and only
count unique visitors each day, not "hits" - which can be many, many times
higher per day.)

We've kept track of the number of daily visitors since the counter was
installed. About four years ago. When we moved to our own private server,
we started logging the data automatically each night at 0330.

Just to illustrate our growth, here are the counter numbers for this date
over the past six years...

    4/8/99 2,970
    4/8/00 60,123
    4/8/01 190,456
    4/8/02 375,776
    4/8/03 608,006
    4/8/04 912,565
    4/8/05 1,250,000

As you can see, we really have grown. In fact, this past summer we had one
day in July when we had 2,933 visitors in a single 24 hour period. And
during the summer months, (when Plebe parents live on the site looking at
hundreds of daily photos of their Plebes) our site averages over 1,200
visitors a day.

Thanks to all who make our web site such a huge success.

PS. Remember to tell all those '09 Parents about www.USNA.org. AND....
Get them to join our lists as well. It was indispensable to your family and
we want it to be just as valuable to the next class of parents as well.
We're counting on YOU to get the word out to all the new parents.

Subj: I-Day Report Times

Dear Naval Academy Alumni Parents and Friends,

As the summer approaches, we are busy preparing for the Induction of the
Class of 2009. This is an exciting time for everyone involved, especially
the candidates that will soon make up the incoming class. I know that many
of you are in contact with these candidates, sharing with them wisdom and
advice on how to succeed at the Naval Academy. You are a great resource for
them as they prepare to report!

I would like to offer my guidance to you in a particular area, namely the
reporting time that they will be asked to check in at the Naval Academy.
The Office of Admissions will issue Alumni Hall reporting times via the
Permit to Report Form beginning at 0600 on I-Day and continuing on
throughout the morning. The reporting times for the class as a whole will
be staggered so that the processing of candidates through Alumni Hall may be
done in an efficient, timely manner. We do not need candidates and families
standing in line at 0530 - or in fact standing in line at all. Our sole
goal is to enable an orderly in-processing of midshipman candidates. They
get no points - and no advantage - for reporting early. If they report
early they will be extra tired by needlessly getting up early on a long,
tiring day. I would ask that, as you counsel the candidate's, you reiterate
the importance of reporting to Alumni Hall at their assigned time.
Furthermore, if you know of any websites that offer conflicting guidance
(such as advice to arrive as early as possible), I would encourage that you
alter them to conform to Naval Academy plans. This would help us greatly in
making I-Day a success this year.

Once parents have dropped off their son or daughter at Alumni Hall, then
suggest they join the Alumni Association picnic to relax, meet other parents
and learn more about the Naval Academy. Please encourage them to come to
the Superintendent's address to the Parents and Families at 1430 in Alumni
Hall.

Once again, I'd like to thank you for the great job that you're doing in
helping us prepare the future Midshipmen of the Class of 2009.

Please be aware of another in the latest of scams to rip off your credit
card information.

This evening I received a notice from "Verified by Visa" claiming that if I
clicked on the "Official" looking link in the mail, I would be taken to the
Official Visa web site and given the opportunity to protect my visa account
against internet fraud.

NO WAY !

IT'S A HOAX !

DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK !

The site is a fake site and all they do is con you into giving them your
account information and pin or passwords so they can rob your account.

Delete the email and DO NOT CLICK ON ANY LINKS.

This sort of "official" looking email is called Phishing (pronounced
fishing) and is fairly common. The emails all look really official and very
convincing but rest assured the credit card companies and your bank will NOT
send you an email looking for you to do something on-line to verify your
account or subscribe to a new security feature. No way! No how!
Legitimate companies use the U.S. Mail to send you notices. The fake offers
won't come in the regular mail because Federal Laws protect you against Mail
Fraud and carry stiff penalties for the criminals.

Be safe and delete all these email offers as soon as you see them. None of
them are real.

USNA GRAD TO BECOME CHAIRMAN, JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF.

Bush Likely to Tap Marine to Head Military
Associated Press | 4-20-2005 | ROBERT BURNS
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20050420/D89J6S6O0.html

WASHINGTON (AP) - Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld has recommended to
President Bush that he nominate Marine General Peter Pace to be the next
chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a senior official said Wednesday.

Bush was expected to announce his choice soon, the official said, speaking
on condition of anonymity.

Pace, 59, currently the Joint Chiefs vice chairman, would be the first
Marine to hold the top job in the military. The Joint Chiefs chairman is the
senior uniformed adviser to the president and the secretary of defense.

It is widely expected that Bush will name Navy Adm. Edmund Giambastiani,
Jr., to succeed Pace as vice chairman. Giambastiani, 56, was Rumsfeld's
senior military assistant before being named commander of U.S. Joint Forces
Command in 2002.

The Pace and Giambastiani moves are among many changes in the works at
senior levels of the Pentagon. The Navy's top officer, Adm. Vern Clark, is
due to retire this summer, and the Air Force chief of staff, Gen. John
Jumper, is due to depart this fall. The job of Air Force secretary is
vacant, and the current Navy secretary, Gordon England, has been nominated
to replace Paul Wolfowitz as deputy defense secretary. Rumsfeld's top policy
aide, Douglas Feith, also is leaving.

If confirmed by the Senate, Pace would succeed Air Force Gen. Richard Myers,
who is scheduled to retire late this summer after four years as chairman.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in Teaneck, N.J., Pace graduated from the
Naval Academy and got a master's degree in business administration from
George Washington University.

After basic training in 1968, he was sent to Vietnam as a rifle platoon
leader. He later served in Korea, as a commander for two years during the
Somali intervention, in Japan and as head of the U.S. Southern Command. He
became vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs in 2001, shortly after the Sept. 11
terrorist attacks.

The Joint Chiefs chairman has the authority to transmit communications from
the president and defense secretary to leaders of the nation's combatant
commands, but does not exercise direct military command over any forces.

>From W. Miller, USNA Academic Dean and Provost

Dear Colleagues - -

It gives me great pleasure to announce the members of the Class of 2006 who
have been approved as Trident Scholars for academic year 2005/06. Trident
applicants must stand in the top 10% of their class academically and in the
top half militarily just to apply. Those selected will invest a substantial
part of their first class year academic time and effort in independent
research under the guidance of one or more faculty members. Historically,
Trident Scholar results have been reported in national and international
conferences and have proven to be substantial contributions to the body of
knowledge in the disciplines in which they have been pursued.

This year's Tridents include projects as diverse as:
An investigation into high speed optical network technology that will permit
transmission and reception of multiple simultaneous optical signals over the
same all-optical local area network; Integrated sensors and control for an
autonomous surface vessel; Investigation into possible novel antimalarial
drugs; Human identification through passive iris pattern recognition; and
Search for another planet in our solar system.

A number of exciting Trident projects proposals were received. After the
Trident Committee had reviewed each proposal in detail and provided me their
recommendations, I was pleased to select 7 midshipmen who will pursue their
ideas within the framework of the Trident Scholar program in academic year
2005/06. These 7 midshipmen, their faculty advisors and the titles of their
projects are:

Ruth M. Gaunt
Electrical Engineering
Assistant Professor Rob Ives and Professor Delores Etter
Using Non-Orthogonal Iris Images for Iris Recognition

Marshall F. Hoffman
Chemistry
Assistant Professor Clare Gutteridge
Design, Synthesis and testing of Novel Folate Antagonists as Antimalarials

Clifford N. Jessop
Electrical Engineering
Associate Professor Brian Jenkins and Captain Robert Voigt
Investigating the Use of Wavelength Conversion for Routing in Optical
Networks

Justin L. R. Langlois
Aerospace Engineering
Commander David Myre and Professor Martin Nelson
Dynamic Computer Model of a Space Power System Consisting of Sterling
Engines Coupled to a Nuclear Reactor

Caleb M. Reed
Systems Engineering
Associate Professor Bradley Bishop and Associate Professor Jennifer Waters
Integration of Sensors and Control for an Automated Surface Vessel

Eric A. Roe
Physics
Assistant Professor Jeffrey Larsen and Professor Elise Albert
Search for a Tenth Planet: Testing Inferences from the Kuiper Cliff

Kristofer M. Womack
Mechanical Engineering
Associate Professor Ralph Volino and Associate Professor Michael Schultz
Combined Effects of Pulsed Film Cooling and Upstream Wakes on Gas Turbine
Airfoil Heat Transfer

Wow! Pretty cool stuff! That is another of the frequent observations about
Trident Scholar projects, they represent some pretty amazing and stimulating
work. If next year's projects sound exciting to you, please plan to spend
some time listening to the final project briefings by the 2005 Trident
Scholars in Rickover Hall Room 103 next Thursday and Friday, April 28 and
29. Look for announcements posted around the academic buildings for brief
summaries of the individual class of 2005 projects to be briefed.

In the meantime, please join me in congratulating the Magnificent Seven
members of the great Class of 2006 who will be pursuing Trident research
projects next academic year.

Have a great Navy day.
