A special message from your Moderators...

With all the new members and the recent transition of the Class of '08 to
Plebes-No-More, I wanted to review our list structure here at USNA-Net.
Even if you think you know all about our lists, please bear with me while I
explain it one more time and read this whole email.

We have MULTIPLE lists. Most of you belong to more than one, perhaps
without even realizing it. Here's how they are set up...

USNA-NET is the MASTER list to which EVERYONE belongs. It is a broadcast
only list and ONLY the Moderators may post messages. We use it to post
news items and general announcement such as this one.

USNA-FAMILY is our MAIN member list. EVERYONE belongs to this list also.
It is a list for discussions of topics of interest to ALL members and
generally deals with...
Academy stuff (Sailing, Sports, Parades, exams, schedules, etc.) and
Upper-Class Parenting issues (Ring Dance, FPW, 2nd Class loans, Comm
Week, etc.).

USNA-PLEBE is a list for the discussion of PLEBE related issues. All of our
'09 members belong to it PLUS 1,712 Upper Class parents have chosen to
remain on the Plebe list to act as Mentors, answering questions and
providing council and advice to the new parents. (But remember, everyone on
the Plebe list is also on the Net and Family lists.)

USNA-PRAYER is our list for Religious needs of our Naval Academy Community.
(1,019 Members) This list exists so that our members may make prayer
requests and otherwise share messages which are of a Religious nature. All
religious references are prohibited on any other list. (Remember, here too,
everyone on the Prayer list is also on the Net and Family lists.)

USNA-WEATHER is a Broadcast only list which distributes the daily, seven day
Weather Forecast for Annapolis each morning. (1,099 Members)

USNA-CLUBS is our list for Parents Club Officers, Chairpersons, Newsletter
Editors and Webmasters. You must hold one of these offices within your
local Parents Club in order to join this list. It routinely discusses fund
raising, membership campaigns, meeting events, and other club related
issues. It currently has 102 active members who are also members of the Net
and Family lists as well.

SWORD (Single, Widowed, Or Remarried / Divorced) is our list for parents
with special circumstances with which they must deal in addition to all the
pressures and issues of our general membership. Having to deal with
Ex-Spouses AND I-Day or Commissioning or... Step-Kids AND Girlfriends are
things with which we help each other on this list. We even tell new members
of this list if their EX is already a member. Confidentiality is paramount
on this list. We currently have 149 members on this list and like all the
other lists, they are also members of the Net and Family list as well.

Remember too, that we offer a DIGEST VERSION of all of our lists, except
Weather. The Digest delivers the exact same information as the regular list
but instead of getting every individual message as a separate message, we
lump them together into larger single messages and send them out whenever
the volume dictates. When message traffic is intense (like Plebe Summer)
you may get several per day. When things slow down, they may come every
other or every third day. Getting the Digest Version can mean significantly
less inbox clutter for you. Just request the Digest version and specify
which list in a message to Owner@USNA-Net.org.

So there you have it. How we're set up. Now if you're tired of getting all
those PLEBE notes, ask to be removed from the Plebe list. If you need
CONFIDENTIAL help with an ex-spouse, ask to be enrolled in the SWORD list.

One last thing...

PLEASE don't ever send a message to more than one list. All that does is
cause a ton of our members to get it twice and it splits the answers between
multiple lists (never a good thing) or sends those answers to more than one
list making a real mess of things.

Have a great day and don't forget to tell all the '09s you see in the next
few weeks about www.USNA.org and all your fine friends here at USNA-Net.

Go Navy - Beat army!

A special message from your Moderators...

Dear Fellow Parents...

Can it be almost a year already since we last asked for your help? We last
came to you in August of 2004 with our annual appeal for fundraising. Well,
a lot has happened in the intervening months. One thing for sure... We've
enjoyed unprecidented levels of participation in our organization by parents
from all over the country.

Normally we would wait another month before beginning our next fund drive
but our expenses have gone up enough over the past year as our organization
has grown that our operating buffer has been seriously depleted. We have
decided to begin the annual campaign now to avoid even the most remote
possibility of an interuption of service. So many of us depend on USNA-Net
in so many ways that we want to be absolutely certain that we will always be
here for you when you need us.

So, we're asking again this year that our members dig deep as we pass the
hat and send us whatever donation you feel you can afford to offset our
operating costs for the coming year.

As you all know, our organization is run by a staff of 100% pure volunteers.
No one is paid a salary for their participation on our Board of Advisors or
as Moderators or Sysops. We rely strictly upon the generosity of these
individuals who give so selflessly of their time and expertise... so much
so that our entire staff was honored this past spring with the Presidential
Volunteer Service Award for their service to our organization.

While every hour of time provided by all of those who volunteer to operate
USNA-Net, either directly or indirectly, is donated without compensation, we
still incur real operating expenses for our server and its connection to the
Internet, so we will need your help again this year to help us defray our
expenses and keep USNA-Net on the Internet and fulfilling its Mission of
"Parents Helping Parents."

For those of you who have contributed in the past, we are asking that you do
so again. For those of our members who are new to USNA-Net, we ask that you
take a moment to send in whatever you can afford.

Many of you have written to express your thanks for all that our lists have
meant to you over the time you have been a member. Most of you "lurk" -
reading everything but writing only when you have a problem or a question
which no one else has expressed. To that "silent majority" this is now your
opportunity to say Thank You to the entire group with a donation to help
keep us going for another year.

Rest assured, we totally understand the restraints on family budgets. It's
tough sometimes to come up with a few extra dollars. If you can't send
something now, we understand. BUT... We really do need our members'
support.

We like to think of ourselves as the Internet equivalent of Public
Television. If you send in your donation, you get to watch PBS. If you
don't, you still get to watch all of the same programs but you just don't
get to feel quite as good about it. :>)

You can find all of the details about how to donate on our website's main
page by clicking on the blue DONATE button in the middle of the page.

On-line donations (via our secure server) may be made using your Visa or
Mastercard with total security and absolute privacy. If you prefer, there
is also an address there to which you may mail a check.

So on behalf of all of the members of USNA-Net and our Board of Advisors...
Thanks so much for your continued support..

A special message from your Moderators...

As this weekend may be the last weekend before I-Day for Picnics and
Gatherings put on by your Local Parents Clubs, please be sure to share our
web address... www.USNA.org with all of the new parents you meet.

YOU are our best advertising. Remember just how much membership in USNA-Net
meant to you. Please encourage them to join us BEFORE I-Day!!!

Even a couple of weeks of advice and support are invaluable to these parents
as they prepare for I-Day.

We have Business Cards at the bottom of our web site's main page. Just
scroll down to the Go Navy - Beat Army signal flags and the link to the
cards is right below. Click and print. Pass them out to everyone you meet
and make sure that they know just how valuable this resource is.

Thanks,

Mike and Sandi Zets
