Subject: Medical Emergency

Yesterday, a serious medical situation arose within Bancroft Hall. The
Brigade medical staff sent Midshipman 4/C Frederick Tomaszycki to Anne
Arundel Hospital to be treated for presumptive bacterial meningitis. As of
this morning, Midshipman Tomaszycki is in stable condition and his mother is
at his bedside.

This is a life-threatening, serious illness which has the potential of being
spread by direct person-to-person contact. For this reason, last night all
members of his company (5th) received antibiotic treatment which is very
effective in stopping the disease. Only close contacts need to receive the
treatment. Close contact includes sharing cigarettes, drinks, glasses or
eating utensils, kissing or otherwise being exposed to secretions from the
nose or throat of the infected person.

Members of the Bancroft Hall Medical Team took steps to question the members
of his company to try and determine if any other members of the Brigade or
other individuals might warrant antibiotic treatment. If you have been in
close contact with Midshipman Tomaszycki, please go to Brigade Medical or
the clinic today and receive treatment. We need to be sure that all that
might need treatment have received it.

If, however, you develop any symptoms (fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea,
vomiting, shin rash in the form of either small red spots or reddish/purple
bruising) please report to Medical immediately for assessment by our medical
staff. Do not wait or hesitate. Better to be sure it is not serious, than
to wonder if it is.

I would also remind all of you to practice good hygiene (cover mouths and
noses when sneezing or coughing, wash hands, etc).

If you have any questions, please call Medical at 410 293 1758.

For further information on Bacterial Meningitis, please see the attached
file from Maryland's Department of Public Health.

Hi Mike:
Our local Club Pres, Kirk Harris, has asked me to send this message to you
with the hopes that you will post to the list serv.
Thank you.

A MESSAGE FROM:
Kirk & Debbie Harris, Presidents
USNA Parents' Club of the Texas Gulf Coast

We wanted to give everyone a heads up to let them know that some travelers
planning to come to Houston for the Navy-Rice game might have a problem with
their hotel reservations because of Hurricane Katrina.

Therefore you are urged to:

1) ...... call directly to the local hotel front desk and confirm
reservation policy for this emergency. Do Not rely on 1-800 general
reservation numbers for this "local" info. You might have to double check
the day you're leaving to get accurate availability.

2) ..... have a backup plan ..... why not use our parents club volunteer
housing? We've sent our housing list to the USNA Logistics Officer. He
has assigned a fresh new Ensign .... Brianna Nelson ... bnelson@usna.edu
... to manage the link between Mids and housing volunteers. She called me
this morning and has a good plan. Anyone who feels like they need a backup
should email her and coordinate for housing. We're all one big Navy family
anyway. Ms. Nelson in charge of the "master" list.

3) ..... if someone gets to Houston and finds that they are in a bind, just
call Debbie or me at home or on our cell phones and we'll work to link you
up with housing volunteers.
Debbie - Cell - 713-854-0897
Kirk - Cell - 713-859-9698

Looking forward to seeing you in Houston and hope this helps .....

Gooooooooo Navy !

Hello fellow USNA Parents:

Just a couple of notes on the Navy-Rice Tailgate and Mids housing that our
Parent's Club are providing .........

TAILGATE & GAME:

If you are planning on coming to Houston and have already bought your
tailgate and game tickets though our club then we'll have them waiting for
you at our "prepaid ticket" table at the tailgate. Just look for the large
banner over the table.

If you are planning on coming to Houston and have NOT already bought your
tailgate and game tickets then we can still help you. Contact our
treasurer, Cathy Aulds, ASAP and let her know your intentions. She can get
you on our "list" .... Then we can have your tickets waiting for you
at the "prepaid" ticket table at our tailgate. (like will-call) You can drop
off your check at that time. (it's too late to use mail) We're getting a
very large discount on the game tickets from Rice, so our combo
tailgate/game price winds up being reasonable. Please do this as soon as
possible. We have to lock down our meal count to the BBQ caterer within a
few days. Please do NOT assume extra tickets (though our club) will be
available on game day. If we can pre-sell all of our tickets we will.

Cathy & Scott Aulds
caulds@hotmail.com
(H) 713-647-8440

Please go to our club's website ... www.usnaparents.org ... And select "club
news" to see all the information concerning the tailgate including pricing.
There will also be a prospective candidate "Op-Info" on the Rice campus at
12:30 pm. If you know of someone coming for this and need directions please
have them contact me.

MIDSHIPMEN VOLUNTEER HOUSING IN HOUSTON:

If your Mid is planning on coming to Houston and wishes to stay "for free"
in one of our volunteer houses then they MUST visit the Midshipmen Welfare
Office or Logistics Officer Ensign Nelson (of the Dant's office) at the USNA
as soon as possible to sign up and be assigned to one of our
volunteer's homes. Our volunteers will also provide taxi service between
local airport, home, and game for the Mids staying with them.

If you "parents" are coming to Houston and expecting to pick up your Mid
from the airport and both stay together in a Hotel please read on. Make
sure that you confirm your hotel reservations with the front desk of the
hotel as soon as possible. With Katrina evacuees all over Houston, you
might run into problems. If you find that you have a problem please have
your Mid get assigned a host family to stay with. Once your Mid has the
host's contact info you can contact them and see if they can fit you in
also. They would probably love to have you and your car to help taxi Mids.
If you wind up getting to Houston and find that there's "no room in the Inn"
for either you or your Mid (and you have no other good options) then give
Debbie and me a call and we'll try to find you a volunteer home. Ensign
Nelson will send me her "master" housing list so I will know the "open"
homes. Most all the housing volunteers are USNA parents and we don't want
you sleeping in your car.

Here's our phone numbers ......

Home .. 281-820-9839
Cell - Kirk - (713) 859-9698
Cell - Debbie - 713-854-0897

If you have questions send me an email or give me a call.

Thanks for your support of the USNA ....

A special message from your Moderators...

This letter is written to present a clear and factual rebuttal to inaccurate
public accusations made about the illegal use of copyrighted material on our
web site at www.USNA.org.

An OPEN LETTER to Ms. Carmen Short, Editor, Island Family Magazine:

17 September 2005

Ms. Short:

It has recently come to our attention at USNA-Net that you have written
letters (quoted below) in which you made false and misleading accusations
concerning the parody of a PEANUTS cartoon on our web site at www.USNA.org.
You intimated that you are an expert on copyrights as "Editor" of your
publication (Island Family Magazine) and in that capacity stated that the
parody was illegal and in violation of US Copyright Law. In your letter you
said that we had STOLEN another's art and that such "inexcusable" actions
were "an embarrassment to those of us who take our mids' pledges of "honor"
and "integrity" to heart..."

In fact, Ms. Short, the parody is NOT a violation of copyright law and is,
in fact, protected by the "Fair Use" clause of that same law as well as the
First Amendment to the US Constitution as Free Speech, facts of which you,
as an "Editor," should be very well aware. The fact that you had actually
gone to such extreme lengths as to contact the copyright holder and "report"
our actions, just demonstrates the undeniable animosity which you feel
toward me and our non-profit organization. We did NOT violate ANY law with
the publication of the PEANUTS cartoon parody on 14 August 2005.

I would direct your attention to the summary of the applicable copyright law
which may be found at http://www.publaw.com/parody.html. If you take the
time to read and understand this summary or the actual text of the law which
may be found on the Federal Government's web site, you will find that all
such parodies are protected. In point of fact, without such protections,
impersonators such as Rich Little, publications such as the Harvard Lampoon
and television programs such as Saturday Night Live could not exist. But
most importantly, because of your continued attempts to slander our
organization and spread false and misleading information without knowing the
applicable law, we received an email yesterday from the copyright holder,
acknowledging that the parody was NOT in violation of US Copyright Law and
stating in no uncertain terms that they have no issue with our publication
of the parody.

I must admit that a typographical error in the spelling of the Mr. Schulz's
last name was a bit of an embarrassment as pointed out in their letter and
per their request, was immediately corrected on our web site. Nonetheless,
our publication of the parody is NOT illegal. Herewith is a full copy of
the email we received yesterday, complete with email addresses so that it's
authenticity may be verified by any interested party...

Dear Mr. Zets:

It has recently come to our attention that you have created a parody using
our PEANUTS characters. While we have no issue with that as you are covered
by law, we do request that you please spell the creator's name correctly.
It is Schulz NOT Shultz.

Regards,

We do not appreciate being called thieves, nor do we take kindly to having
OUR "honor and integrity" called into question by someone who purports to be
an expert but who is in fact, ill-informed.

Lastly, I'd like to point out that, in reference to your sarcastic remark
("you'll be able to make your own decision as to which list has accurate,
up-to-date information that, indeed, comes from reliable sources."), it is
obvious that, at least in this instance, you are not one of those accurate
and reliable sources.

Since it would be fruitless to request a public apology, we will simply
request of you to cease and desist in all references to USNA-Net and its
moderators. And we ask that those who published your mis-information, act
responsibly to prevent any further public attacks on our character or our
organization.

Respectfully,

Aloha,

Let's just say it wouldn't be the first time that incorrect/unclassified
info was posted on another list w/ the claim that it was "official".

Here is another serious allegation made by me: The fact that another website
has a copyrighted Charles Shultz cartoon "adapted" for PPW. This is an
embarrassment to those of us who take our mids' pledges of "honor" and
"integrity" to heart and makes me embarrassed to have that organization
represent USNA in any way. You don9t just steal an artist9s work. Imagine
how much Met Life pays to use the image of Snoopy. It is inexcusable.

There is no animosity between the two lists, but stick around awhile, and
you'll be able to make your own decision as to which list has accurate,
up-to-date information that, indeed, comes from reliable sources.

Aloha,

My post was not mean-spirited at all. As a publisher, I take copyright
violations very seriously and have won several lawsuits where people stole
copyrighted material from my magazine. My work is nowhere near as valuable
as the late Charles Schultz'.

I'm not bothered at all that there are two lists. I am bothered that anyone
who wants to find out more about USNA might go to a website with such a
flagrant display of dishonesty.

I'm a very tolerant person. But, no, I don't tolerate dishonesty. Why would
anyone?
