A special message from your USNA-Net Moderators...
==================================================

Every so often, I find myself thinking... "I should tell them about that."
And so this time, I shall.

Lately, our members seem to have fallen into several "bad habits" with
regard to questions and answers for the lists and Sandi and I want to make
sure you all remember just how things are supposed to work.

A member has a question. She writes to the list with the question and other
parents who know the answer, who have experience in that topic, send an
answer to the list, sharing their know-how and experience with everyone
else.

That's the way our lists are designed to work. Sharing of Advice and
Support among the entire group. It's what makes this service so unique and
so very helpful.

But lately, things seem to be going a bit differently. Too many members are
responding PRIVATELY to questions and not sharing their answers with the
group. OR..... They're not responding at all. They read the email, knowing
the answer, and they just shrug their "virtual" shoulders, figuring that
someone else will answer the question. And lately, it's come down to no
one answers on the list.

When you answer a question "on the lists" you are sharing your answer with
the dozens of others who read the original question and wanted to know the
answer, too. When you answer privately, those members never hear your
answer.

I'm writing today to encourage all of our members to participate in the
lists when it's appropriate -- to share YOUR answers with the entire group.
This is what makes our service so wonderful. We have a wealth of knowledge
and experience among our 3,500+ members and it's magnificent when we share
what we know with everyone. Everyone has something to contribute; something
which can help a fellow parent.

So, please.... If you can remember. Hit the "Reply to All" button when you
know the answer to a question. Don't wait for someone else to do it. And
if you have questions, remember to write to the list. The addresses are all
on our main page at www.USNA.org.

Go Navy.

A special message from your USNA-Net Moderators...
==================================================

This is an ADVISARY message from your Moderators about potential security
risks on the Internet. All of our members should be aware of this growing
SECURITY problem...

It is called PHISHING (pronounced fishing) and it is a real problem to
everyone with a modem and a computer.

They come as Emails that LOOK just like they came from your bank or eBay or
PayPal. In one form or another, these emails look really authentic and
claim that something is wrong with YOUR account or that they are conducting
a security check or... You get the idea.

This morning I got another one. This time from PayPal (I really do have an
account with them) and they were telling me that I had just purchased a new
laptop computer and they were confirming the purchase, ship to address (not
mine) and shipping charges for a total of $1,380.85 USD.

AND... Lo and behold, in the middle of the bottom of the email page was a
not-so-inconspicuous link to "Dispute this Purchase." Upon closer
examination, it would NOT have taken me to PayPal's web site, even thought
everything on the page seemed to indicate that if I clicked on that link I
would be taken to PayPal where I could legitimately dispute the purchase.
BOGUS...

First of all, if YOU get one of these emails, delete it immediately. THEY
ARE ALL FAKE! No one sends email to you which requires that you click on a
link and log in to fix a problem with your account. NO ONE! Not your bank.
Not your credit card companies and certainly not PayPal or eBay.

When you click on these bogus links, you aren't just visiting a benign web
site. In almost all cases, you launch an executable program on the foreign
server which grabs all sorts of information from your computer! Just
clicking on a link in that email can give away a ton of information about
you including your email address, street address, and all of the private
passwords which are stored on our computer!

The bogus web site also looks exactly like you are visiting the real thing,
including a place for you to supply a user name and password. DON'T DO IT!
It won't access your account, it will give your user name and password to
the bad guys. Some go even further and once it appears that you have logged
in to your account, they require that you input all your current private
information such as SSN, street address, mother's maiden name... You name
it. They want you to "confirm" it for them. All the while looking just
like the real web site.

Many people fall for these hoaxes and have their identities stolen. Or
worse yet, they voluntarily GIVE away their identities. So don't fall
victim to these Phishing expeditions. When you see any email that purports
to come from your bank or credit card company, etc. Delete it and call the
company at the number you get off of your latest account statement or the
back of your credit card. THEN you can be sure that you aren't being
scammed.

Please be careful. Identity theft is a very real problem. Don't get
scammed.

Go Navy...

A special message from your USNA-Net Moderators...
==================================================

Just in time for all of our new members, we have revised the Parents'
Handbook on our web site at www.USNA.org.

We've added a Table of Contents to help you find things when you come back
to it, hopefully over and over again. (We actually recommend reading it
from start to finish as you would a book when you go to it the first time.)

AND...

We've finally added the much sought after GLOSSARY of USNA terms plus a
generous sprinkling of Navy terms, too. With 282 Navy or USNA Terms defined
in regular civilian English, you'll finally be able to understand what we've
all been talking about on our lists.

You'll find the GLOSSARY included in our Parents' Handbook and also
available directly from the latest new icon on our main page. Just look for
the "Glossary" icon near the left center on www USNA.org

Enjoy.

And while you're at it, if you can think of a few more terms to add to our
Glossary, please send them along with YOUR definition to me at this address.
We'll be sure to add it quickly.
