Q: Why are RELIGIOUS REFERENCES prohibited on USNA-Net Lists?

A:  Our membership consists of over 4,000 families of every possible extraction, ethnicity and belief structure.    We are Christian, Jew, Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and many others.

At times like this, it is only natural for some of our members to become emotionally charged and wish to express their faith via any means available.  They will offer prayers and diatribes for all to read.  We must remember, however, that all of our membership does not always see things in exactly the same way.  Christ is God to some and a Prophet to others.  Buddha manifests Himself in many ways to yet others.  The followers of Islam share a much different perspective.

While most of our members are comfortable knowing that others mean no offense by offering prayers to the Blessed Virgin, other religious beliefs regards this as sacrilege.  How are your Moderators to please everyone and offend no one? Even Solomon would have difficulty with this sort of problem.  So, for the comfort of all of our members, our service has adopted a position of remaining purely secular.  In this way, we offend no one.

It isn't that we are anti-religion but in deference to all, we have specified that our lists will remain non-religious.  There is a time and a place for all things.  In order that we might do the most good for the widest possible spectrum of membership, we have consistently insisted that messages to our lists remain free of all possibly offensive materials...  Political, Sexual, Discriminatory, and Religious references, even in the most casual mention.

As you send an email to our Navy Family, you have to keep in mind that you are sending that message into thousands of homes.  I know that you have the kindest heart and the best of intentions but try to remember that no more than you would go into a Jewish Synagogue and begin to loudly preach about the Pain of the Crucifixion, you should neither want to offend other members by allowing open references to anything which might possibly be equally as inappropriate or offensive.

If you truly wish to share your Religious thoughts and make prayer requests of our membership, we provide a special list, To protet ourselves from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled. which many of our members use to share their thoughts and prayers. Consider joining that list if you have strong Religious Beliefs and find comfort in sharing along these lines.

Thank you for understanding.
