Things to do around Annapolis

  • Historic Annapolis -- several of the homes within blocks of USNA are open for touring including the William Paca House and Gardens, the Hammond-Harwood House, and the Chase-Lloyd House. You can also see historic rooms/exhibits (and modern rooms as well!) at the Maryland State House. The Banneker-Douglass Museum covers much of the region's African-American history. The website at www.hometownannapolis.com/tour.html maintained by the Annapolis Capital newspaper has great links for more information on all of the above.
  • Maritime Annapolis -- several companies offer boat trips from 40 minutes on up leaving from the City Dock. The short cruises are a perfect treat for fidgety younger siblings that need a 1-2 hour break while waiting for your plebe to get town liberty. There is a fishing pier at Jonas Green State park (underneath Academy Bridge near USNA) for those so inclined -- check on fishing/crabbing license requirements first. To go swimming, you'll need to either head out to Sandy Point State Park (off Route 50 prior to the Bay Bridge) or swim indoors at your hotel pool or at the Arundel Olympic Swim Center on Riva Road.
  • Agricultural/Horticultural Annapolis -- The county farmer's market operates on Saturday (and now Sunday) mornings at the intersection of Riva Road and Truman Parkway. There is a wonderful (and free) gem of a garden called the Helen Avalynne Tawes Garden at the MD Department of Natural Resources building (intersection of Taylor & Rowe Blvd). A little outside of town -- Horizon Organic Dairy (formerly the USNA Dairy Farm) in Gambrills has an Organic Corn Maze with 3.5 miles of twisting trails to follow.
  • Shopping & Dining around town --You will find plenty of recommendations available in both categories.  The "Miracle Mile" parts of town with abundant fast food/gas stations include (but aren't limited to) West Street (from the Annapolis Mall/Westfields Shoppingtown to Spa Road), Route 2 in either direction from Annapolis (just not the section that is also part of Route 50), and Route 3/301 either north or south of Route 50.

  • Gas Stations -- Be aware that finding a gas station near the USNA can be a bit of a challenge -- better to gas up a little further from the historic district. There is a Shell gas station in Eastport at the corner of 6th and Severn.
