Creating a Desktop Shortcut. |

What follows is an illustrated primer on how to set up and use a Desktop Shortcut & Icon in Microsoft Windows®: Please follow along with the step-by-step instructions below. You should be able to read these instructions in one window while you perform the procedure in another window open right beside this one. Commands you must either Click or Type are illustrated like this in the tutorial below. |

Step ONE - Downloading the USNA Icon... |

Right Click on the image of the USNA Icon above and Select Save Image As from the Dropdown Menu. Be sure that the image is saved with an .ICO suffix. Your computer may try to save it with a .BMP suffix. If so, enclose the file name (usna-crest.ico) in quotation marks before you click the SAVE button. The file must be saved as usna-crest.ico Remember where you saved it for use later. |
Step TWO - Creating the Shortcut... |

Close or Minimize all current Windows (except this one) to reveal your Desktop. RIGHT CLICK on an empty spot on the Desktop where you wish to place the Shortcut Icon. Select NEW and SHORTCUT from the Dropdown Menu. You will see a new Dialog Box which looks like this...
Type in http://www.USNA.org as shown and click Next.
Type in USNA-Net as shown and click Finish. You should now see your almost finished Shortcut Icon on your Desktop. It will look something like this... |
Step THREE - Changing the Default Icon |

Right Click on this new Shortcut and Select Properties from the Dropdown Menu. This will open a new dialog box that looks like this...
Click on the Change Icon button which will open another Dialog Box that looks like this...
Click on the Browse button and navigate to where you saved the icon file in Step ONE above. (We told you to remember where you saved it.)
When you find it, click on OK and OK again. Your Shortcut Icon should now look like this... Double Clicking on it will now launch your Browser and send you immediately to our home page at www.USNA.org. It can't get any easier to visit your favorite web site on the Internet. USNA-Net.
